Those Little Sci-Fi Shows You Love So Much - This is That Post

(Promo for Episode 2x07: 'Second Degree')

Continuum has been renewed for a third season.

Further episodes of the Rachel Nichols sci-fi drama have been green-lit by Canadian network Showcase.

A second season of Defiance has also been confirmed, alongside a series commission of Battlestar Galactica exec Ron Moore's new drama Helix.

Continuum stars Nichols (Criminal Minds, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra) as Kiera Cameron, a law enforcement officer who pursues a gang of rebels from the future of 2077 to the present-day.

"Kiera goes through a very interesting moral crisis... because in 2077 she knows who she is and she knows what she's fighting, she knows what's bad and good," Nichols told Digital Spy.

"She comes back to 2012 and her world is completely turned upside down and everything she believes she stood for is in question."*****

"Stargate Universe" actor Brian J. Smith returns to Syfy next week as a guest star in the network's sci-fi drama "Defiance."

Smith, who played Lt. Matthew Scott in the late, great "SGU" (see our "shows that ended too soon" gallery), portrays Gordon McClintock, a NASA hero from the pre-Arkfall days who was presumed dead following a space station catastrophe in 2013.

Remember that Ark that crash-landed near Defiance in the most recent episode? It was the Destiny! OK, maybe not, but apparently McClintock was onboard and in a state of suspended animation. When he is revived from the induced sleep, he's overcome with shock and disbelief at the dangerous new Earth of 2046.

As you can see in the sneak peek above, McClintock has flashbacks to both his wife and to what Indogene scientists did to him in the past. No wonder if freaks out Doc Yewll (Trenna Keating) poking at him.

Smith said he had fun shooting the role in Toronto last fall. The show has "very strong writing, the actors are great and the world is very cool," he wrote on Twitter about a month after filming.

"Defiance" tells the story of Earth several years after the arrival of seven alien races sparked 30 years of war, transforming Earth into a radically different world where humans and aliens are attempting to co-exist peacefully. The boom-town of Defiance, which sits atop the ruins of St. Louis, Mo., is the center of the action.

Smith's episode, "I Just Wasn't Made for These Times," airs at 8 p.m. CT June 10 on Syfy.

After wrapping "SGU," Smith starred in the Syfy movie "Red Faction" and recurred on "Gossip Girl" as Max Harding. He's also appeared in episodes of "Warehouse 13," "The Good Wife," "Blue Bloods," "Person of Interest" and in the miniseries "Coma."

The Julliard School graduate has been working in theater, too, with roles on Broadway in "The Columnist" opposite John Lithgow in 2011. This fall he'll return to Broadway, reprising his role as Jim in the American Repertory Theater's production of "The Glass Menagerie" opposite Cherry Jones and Zachary Quinto.*****

Helix tells the story of a team of scientists who must save the human race from annihilation following a disease outbreak at an Arctic research facility.

The 13-episode series is being exec produced by Moore, Lost's Steven Maeda, Interstellar producer Lynda Obst and writer Cameron Porsandeh.

"With its well-drawn characters, taut drama and incredible production team, we couldn't be more excited to see this intense thrill-ride of a series come to life," said Syfy's President of Original Content, Mark Stern.

Helix will premiere on Syfy in late 2013.*****

Syfy announced today that Warehouse 13, the Emmy Award-nominated, long-running hit series, will commence production on its fifth and final season June 24th in Toronto.

The six all-new episodes of Season 5 will premiere in 2014.

Said Warehouse 13 showrunner and executive producer Jack Kenny "Warehouse 13 has been my dream job these past four years. These last six episodes will be a gift from my brilliant writing staff and the best cast and crew in television to our amazingly loyal fans. I'm thrilled that we can build the climax of our Warehouse tale to a satisfying conclusion."

Season 4 of Warehouse 13 is currently airing Mondays at 10PM (ET/PT) following the new hit series Defiance, which airs at 9PM.*****
