A 17-year-old high school member of the track team went to police yesterday after learning that amateur Internet sleuths were circulating photos on social media of him and a friend at the Boston Marathon, claiming they may be possible suspects in Monday’s explosions, according to the ABC News.
Then, on Thursday, Salah Barhoum, who attends Revere High School in Revere, Mass., found himself and his friend pictured on the front page of The New York Post with the headline, “BAG MEN: Feds seek these two pictured at Boston Marathon.”
Mr. Barhoum told ABC News that he had gone to watch the race near the finish line in Copley Square with a friend, described as a track coach.
Several photos of the two men were widely circulated over social media after sites popped up on Reddit and 4Chan dedicated to identifying potential bombing suspects.
Reviewing video and images of the crowd taken before and after the explosions, thousands of people online shared annotated photos singling out people in the crowd, carrying large backpacks, not watching the race closely, and, in one case, carrying a backpack with straps similar to the straps found on the shredded remains of the bag believed to have held one of the bombs.
The Post said on its front page that federal law enforcement officials were sharing images of the two men, adding that “there is no direct evidence linking them to the crime, but authorities want to identify them.”
In a statement released to reporters Thursday, the New York Post’s editor Col Allan said, “We stand by our story. The image was emailed to law enforcement agencies yesterday afternoon seeking information about these men, as our story reported. We did not identify them as suspects.”
Meanwhile, on an athletic college recruiting site, Mr. Barhoum described himself this way:
"My name is Salaheddin Barhoum, I’m a runner in Revere MA, I been doing this since I was 12 years and I enjoy it , I run for momentum athletic club as well as revere high school track team . I feel great when I run with clubs more than when I run with school because clubs take it serious and the coaches have more techniques to teach their athle and I love it. I’m Moroccan and I started doing track in Morocco. My dream is to get to the level where everybody who works hard deserve and I want to say thank you to the people who supported me in this."
Edit: FBI release images of 2 Boston Marathon bombing suspects
The FBI on Thursday released surveillance video showing two potential suspects in the Boston Marathon bombing.
Investigators had been focusing on a man wearing a white baseball cap seen dropping off a bag, and then walking away from the site of the second of two deadly explosions. CBS News correspondent Bob Orr reports that investigators were able to retrace his steps and discovered video of the man with another man carrying a backpack.
The surveillance footage from a department store near the finish line was released three days after the attack that left three people dead, wounded more than 170, and cast a dark shadow over one of this city's most joyous traditions.
Orr reports that after releasing the video, the FBI is hoping for tips that will identify men. Investigators are using facial recognition software; scouring criminal databases; and trying to to find a match. They have some potential names for these suspects but they are currently unable to match.
I know people were talking about these pics from 4chan and reddit a lot in one of yesterday's posts... NY Post how about you go take a seat over there with CNN... also fixed to add source, sorry mods. what a rookie mistake.
