Barely Relevant Etonian Takes On Poverty Challenge

Actor TOM HIDDLESTON has vowed to live on just 93 pence a day for one week to support a United Nations (U.N.) Children's Fund (UNICEF) campaign in aid of starving children.

The Thor star has taken to his Twitter.com page to urge followers to join him in the challenge, which aims to raise awareness of poverty around the world.

Hiddleston tweeted, "(This week) I start living Below The Line to help UNICEF stop children suffering from hunger. Take the challenge too. The World Bank defines poverty as living on less than £1 a day. The challenge is to buy all the food and drink you need to survive for five days with just £5 (£1 per day)."

The star added that he was going to "miss coffee very much" and shared photos of his first pared-down meals, including toast and a plate of rice and vegetables.

ninjacandy 8th-Apr-2013 03:48 pm (UTC)
i don't wear a wig so you're gunna have to scalp me first, thank-you very much.

metaphor has now become a pataphor.

Who is that beaut in your icon?
noneformethanx 8th-Apr-2013 03:44 pm (UTC)
All congress and government officials should do this too
ninjacandy 8th-Apr-2013 03:46 pm (UTC)
Ian Ducan Smith is my first vote.
kurokaen 8th-Apr-2013 11:16 pm (UTC)
One of my state reps is actually doing this too, for a week. I feel like a week isn't really enough to learn much, you don't have to learn about how to manage your rent or car payment, but it's better than nothing, I guess.

OP is fucking flawless.
inboots 8th-Apr-2013 04:09 pm (UTC)
it feels like you, op & sarahvm formed a junta to bring upon the fassbender-cumberbatch-hiddleston backslash on ontd.
comalies 8th-Apr-2013 04:43 pm (UTC)
Who's to say we didn't?
kukamine 8th-Apr-2013 06:00 pm (UTC)
hey bb how are
Hope you did well on your papers :)
cookinguptales 8th-Apr-2013 03:45 pm (UTC)
Wait, I'm confused as to how this helps starving children. Is it a thing where a certain amount is donated for people who complete the challenge? Or a thing where people can sponsor him to do this like those charity walks?
comalies 8th-Apr-2013 03:47 pm (UTC)
It 'raises awareness'. Because people don't already know there are starving children.
ninjacandy 8th-Apr-2013 03:48 pm (UTC)
but did people (outside of tumblr) know that hiddleston was still around?
cookinguptales 8th-Apr-2013 03:50 pm (UTC)
I see.
mynamehere07 8th-Apr-2013 03:49 pm (UTC)
If anything it will raise awareness, which is never a bad thing. Thou it does feel like it's filled with "rich person wants to feel bad for poor people" stunt.

godramaclub 8th-Apr-2013 04:24 pm (UTC)
I assumed you'd budget out what you'd normally spend in a week, take 93p out of that budget for each day you're taking part in the challenge, and donate the rest to charity, but I'm not 100% sure if that's what happens.
wauwy 8th-Apr-2013 03:47 pm (UTC)
I read "Estonian" and got

the_glow_worm 8th-Apr-2013 03:47 pm (UTC)
ikr, like just donate $100,000 or something
ecrivais 8th-Apr-2013 03:49 pm (UTC)
yeah and a week is nothing.
ninjacandy 8th-Apr-2013 03:51 pm (UTC)
and he could stop talking about D&G too.

tax evading sweat shop entrepreneurs do not scream 'actor who cares about the poor and sustainability'.

eyduh 8th-Apr-2013 05:48 pm (UTC)

it's ridiculous, plus the fact that he's posting pics of his "poor man" meals, which is seriously disrespectful, just donate money for crying out loud
robotpotatoes 8th-Apr-2013 03:49 pm (UTC)
oh for a week? to raise awareness on a topic that is essentially known to a large population of people?

I guess people will forget after that week - ugh hate these campaigns, just like the change your profile picture to the red HRC logo to support marriage equality
anchellada 8th-Apr-2013 03:54 pm (UTC)
yep. or statuses that are like "make this your status to help starving children!" like, no that isnt helping. the starving children dont have internet to even see how much you people arent helping them.

UGH. Those are the worst!

Your bra color will cure cancer!
Make your userpic a cartoon to stop child abuse!
Every time this graphic photo is posted, Mark Zuckerberg will donate a dollar to a shelter/hospital/charity.
amkf 8th-Apr-2013 03:50 pm (UTC)
Good lord is that an asshole thing to do.
cringinglove 8th-Apr-2013 03:52 pm (UTC)
Stuff like this just feels so hollow and idk.. patronizing, in a way. He still gets to finish up his week and go back to living as lavishly as he pleases, so

rme i hate this shit. such a publicity stunt.
loveumbrella 8th-Apr-2013 03:53 pm (UTC)
Good for him, but that is incredibly easy if it means keeping the rest of your lifestyle, I mean during those five days you don't need to buy anything but food - you still have clean water and a roof above your head, not to mention everything else.

(and lol the other day i saw someone on tumblr call him and cumberbatch "probably two most intelligent persons in the UK" because they went to famous schools, I wanted to jump in a pool of acid tbh.)
ninjacandy 8th-Apr-2013 03:54 pm (UTC)
they went to fee charging schools too.

fabouluz 8th-Apr-2013 03:56 pm (UTC)
They went to schools that cost £60,000 a year in fees. If they were educated for 18 years in a fee paying school that is fucking load of money for their education.
loveumbrella 8th-Apr-2013 04:00 pm (UTC)
Yeah? I mean you can do whatever you want with your money, and paying the education for your kids is the least stupid of those things but that is a ridiculous amount of money, and that still doesn't buy you intelligence or wisdom.
rewrittentime 8th-Apr-2013 04:27 pm (UTC)
ia. omg i want to punch whoever said that in the face.
narco_chan 8th-Apr-2013 03:54 pm (UTC)
even though this is a well known issue i think its cool he's trying
to be honest though, if he donated the money that he would have used during the week on food, and lived on the >£1 it would be better.
godramaclub 8th-Apr-2013 04:27 pm (UTC)
that's actually what i assumed this was, since it seems the most logical way to do it, but changes are he's gonna be sponsored or some shit.
narco_chan 8th-Apr-2013 04:29 pm (UTC)
... well what if he donates his money and then his sponsors match the donation?
that would be the best of both right?
slaughtermatic 8th-Apr-2013 03:55 pm (UTC)
He seems so well meaning but he's so fucking dumb.
ninjacandy 8th-Apr-2013 03:56 pm (UTC)
like so many people on earth.

it's why bill gates and rockerfeller are able to try to wipe out brown people in their grand plan to monopolize the agricultural sector.
slaughtermatic 8th-Apr-2013 03:59 pm (UTC)
I'm ignoring your point completely because who is dat gqmf in your icon.
athwartship 8th-Apr-2013 11:19 pm (UTC)
tell me more about gates + rockefeller (if u want! if not i'll look it up later)
fabouluz 8th-Apr-2013 03:55 pm (UTC)
One week doesn't mean you can understand the suffering people below the poverty line feel every day. Surely he should give up all his expensive items and electronic things like a camera to feel that power of being that poor.
loveumbrella 8th-Apr-2013 04:03 pm (UTC)
or privilege and some kind of authority, cough cough.
sukha4 8th-Apr-2013 03:55 pm (UTC)
I'm not sure how this raises money. I guess people will see it and decide to donate and stuff?

I'm not a fan of these largely useless campaigns (like Earth Hour), but bless his heart.
