Kate Winslet officially joins sci-fi thriller 'Divergent'

kate_winslet

Oscar winner Kate Winslet is set to converge with Summit Entertainment's "Divergent"

The actress is joining stars Shailene Woodley and Theo James in the much buzzed-about YA adaptation. It was previously rumored that she was in talks for the film, but the studio has now made it official.

Based on first-time author Veronica Roth's bestselling book, the film takes place in a dystopian future, where the population is divided into separate groups based on their personalities. Labeled as a "divergent" who doesn't fit into any of the groups, Tris Prior (Woodley) accidentally uncovers a secret conspiracy to eliminate all "divergents." So begins her battle for survival. Winslet will play a character named Jeanine Matthews.

The confirmed cast also includes Jai Courtney, Zoë Kravitz, Ansel Elgort and Maggie Q.

Naturally, Roth's "Divergent" is the first book in a trilogy, giving Summit another shot at a massive "Twilight"/"Hunger Games"-style YA film franchise.

"Divergent" will be directed by Neil Burger ("Limitless") from a script by Vanessa Taylor. Doug Wick and Lucy Fisher are, along with Pouya Shahbazian. Red Wagon's Rachel Shane is executive producing.

Principal photography will begin this April in Chicago.

In 2011, Winslet won several awards for her work on HBO's "MIldred Pierce," and co-starred in "Contagion" and "Carnage." Most recently she was part of the huge ensemble comedy "Movie 43," and she'll next be seen in Jason Reitman's "Labor Day" along with Josh Brolin and Tobey Maguire.

"Divergent" will be released March 21, 2014.

I've tried to read Divergent like ten times but it's fucking stupid
saintssin 23rd-Mar-2013 02:39 am (UTC)
~ THE OH SO BRAVE ONES THROW THEMSELVES IN FRONT OF TRAINS AND HOP ACROSS TRACKS TO PROVE THEIR NOBILITY~

you know what? My friends did the same thing in middle school. Wanna know what I called them? fucking stupid.
itscomicrelief 23rd-Mar-2013 02:44 am (UTC)
The fucking idea that everyone is divided by one dimensional personality types is problematic in and of itself.

Then the idea that the main character encompasses like 2 of these character traits is laughable because at that point, she's still not a full character.
notoriousreign 23rd-Mar-2013 02:49 am (UTC)
lol basically.
psubookworm27 23rd-Mar-2013 02:57 am (UTC)
you know what? My friends did the same thing in middle school. Wanna know what I called them? fucking stupid.

THIS BRILLIANT PIECE OF TRUTH RIGHT HERE.
shining_starsxx 23rd-Mar-2013 03:05 am (UTC)
Exactly. ~We're so cool we jump out of trains and eat cheeseburgers everyday~

I'm too old for this.
chimbleysweep 23rd-Mar-2013 03:16 am (UTC)
idk why that is a sign of being noble and brave because my mom grew up in the burbs of Chicago, so in Divergent territory, and jumping the tracks was a normal part of growing up there.
cruel_fortuna 23rd-Mar-2013 04:16 am (UTC)
I stupidly made the decision to buy it back I don't know - two years ago & I made it 75 pages in before I said "fuck it" & moved on with my life.

Best decision ever.
I'd rather read Cassandra Clare's shit-writing & that's saying something.
mjspice 23rd-Mar-2013 05:47 pm (UTC)
Well dang. Now I dunno whether to read it or not....
psubookworm27 23rd-Mar-2013 02:39 am (UTC)
which character is that? I feel like everything in this book is so forgettable.
fenchurchly 23rd-Mar-2013 02:44 am (UTC)
... the bad one? I think?
squirrels_oh_no 23rd-Mar-2013 03:05 am (UTC)
She's the leader of the Intellectual Class, aka the evil ones. Because scientists are evil.
dubiously 23rd-Mar-2013 03:12 am (UTC)
I know this to be true, for peta tells me so.
psubookworm27 23rd-Mar-2013 03:27 am (UTC)
they're kinda knowledge hoarders, too, yeah? wait, I could be thinking of a different book.
sereniti_ii 23rd-Mar-2013 12:38 pm (UTC)
She's also fat, too, remember. Because evil people aren't pretty.
itscomicrelief 23rd-Mar-2013 02:43 am (UTC)
Kate Winslet isn't gonna help this piece of shit not turn into a flop.

Jeremy Irons, Emma Thompson and Viola Davis couldn't help Ugly Flops.

Kate is not gonna help Flopvergent.

Jonathan Rhys Myers is not going to help Fatsandra Eclair'es The Flop Instruflops: Shitty of Scones
fenchurchly 23rd-Mar-2013 02:45 am (UTC)
cackling @ Ugly Flops
georgie_georgie 23rd-Mar-2013 02:49 am (UTC)
hahahahaha.
xxxtttiiinnnaaa 23rd-Mar-2013 03:03 am (UTC)

chimbleysweep 23rd-Mar-2013 03:05 am (UTC)
omg lmao
shining_starsxx 23rd-Mar-2013 03:26 am (UTC)
Lol Ugly Flops.
bssybuse 23rd-Mar-2013 03:28 am (UTC)
i feel bad for JRM
sereniti_ii 23rd-Mar-2013 12:45 pm (UTC)
it's always depressing how these shitty projects manage to snatch good actors. Lena Headey, Aiden Turner, Godfrey Gao, and Jared Harris for TMI.
But I'm pretty sure Winslet's just in it for the $$$, in which case, get that possible franchise money.
mjspice 23rd-Mar-2013 05:49 pm (UTC)
Lee Pace in Twilight is another example of a good actor is a shitty movie. O_O
mjspice 23rd-Mar-2013 05:48 pm (UTC)
Dying @ this comment which ain't a flop. XDD
lestat 23rd-Mar-2013 02:44 am (UTC)
gorl.
paulmitchell 23rd-Mar-2013 02:46 am (UTC)
is this book worth it to read? i really want to find a good dystopian novel
itscomicrelief 23rd-Mar-2013 02:47 am (UTC)
No. It's really fucking awful. Soemoen told em to read it because I liked Hunger Games, but jesus christ it was awful.

If you're looking for an amazing dystopian novel, please read Wool by Hugh Howey. I'm fucking obsessed't. The movie rights were bought by Ridley Scott.
fenchurchly 23rd-Mar-2013 02:50 am (UTC)
thanks for the rec!
paulmitchell 23rd-Mar-2013 02:52 am (UTC)
that's such a bummer about it being awful :( thank you for your recommendation i will definitely check it out <3
dacrayzblaze1 23rd-Mar-2013 04:01 am (UTC)
Read The Knife of Never LEtting Go by Patrick Ness! I found it to be way better than the Hunger Games. Came out around the same time! That and Life as We Knew It by Susan Beth Pfeffer. To this day the only thing that gave me nightmares.
mjspice 23rd-Mar-2013 05:58 pm (UTC)
This seems interesting. *goes to get*
psubookworm27 23rd-Mar-2013 02:47 am (UTC)
you'll need to step away from YA for that. I found it to be like most of the YA dystopians out there--not bad, but by the end you want it to be so much more.
georgie_georgie 23rd-Mar-2013 02:49 am (UTC)
no.
saintssin 23rd-Mar-2013 02:50 am (UTC)
just give me seven months max, okay?
pseudo_nom 23rd-Mar-2013 02:51 am (UTC)
no, it's forgettable.
fenchurchly 23rd-Mar-2013 02:52 am (UTC)
Here are a few of my favorites if we're talking YA:

- For Darkness Shows the Stars (re-telling of Persuasion)
- Black CIty
- Chosen Ones
- The Darkest Minds
- The Mad Scientist's Daughter (though this is more of a character study and kind of depressing, also more adult)
squirrels_oh_no 23rd-Mar-2013 03:06 am (UTC)
Skip it. Pick up Mandy Hager's The Crossing instead.
woundedseraphim 23rd-Mar-2013 04:09 am (UTC)
The Uglies series (Scott Westerfeld) is pretty good.

sereniti_ii 23rd-Mar-2013 12:46 pm (UTC)
No, it's terrible. If you want YA Dystopia, try Unwound by Neal Shusterman.
mjspice 23rd-Mar-2013 05:51 pm (UTC)
The Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa & Warm Bodies by Isaac Marion.

The Clockwork Century series by Cherie Priest is both Dystopian & Steampunk tbh.

Kate...
itscomicrelief 23rd-Mar-2013 02:48 am (UTC)
She probably wants to get an addition to her house or something.

Or whoever got her to do Movie 43 still has shit on her.
ponpiri 23rd-Mar-2013 02:50 am (UTC)
lmao I think she said that one of her kids is a fan of the book. bs imo
annadraper 23rd-Mar-2013 02:52 am (UTC)
i blame ned rocknroll for this. for everything, actually.
shining_starsxx 23rd-Mar-2013 03:29 am (UTC)
I know Kate,we were rooting for you.

bodylikemind 23rd-Mar-2013 02:58 am (UTC)
idgaf i'm excited and i have a feeling the movie is gonna be better than the book but i liked the first book so i'm in the minority
squirrels_oh_no 23rd-Mar-2013 03:06 am (UTC)
But what did you think of the second book, hmm?
bodylikemind 23rd-Mar-2013 03:23 am (UTC)
i thought it was slow and kind of felt like it went in circles but like i said, i think this movie will be better than the book and if they make the sequels hopefully those will be too. i don't have an opinion on the series as a whole yet because the third book isn't out yet. i was bored by the first hunger games book, loved the second, and hated the third but enjoyed the first movie a lot so my opinion on the books usually doesn't have much to do with my feelings towards the movies.
la_nostalgia 23rd-Mar-2013 12:22 pm (UTC)
I like it as well. I was annoyed at things while reading, but it was still entertaining in the end.
rogue 23rd-Mar-2013 02:59 am (UTC)
shailene woodley is quickly becoming as insufferable as jennifer lawrence. can these franchises just stop

kate, you're too good for this
xxxtttiiinnnaaa 23rd-Mar-2013 03:04 am (UTC)
That's impossible.
bodylikemind 23rd-Mar-2013 03:21 am (UTC)
lmao shailene is barely out there though maybe next year when she's actually being shoved down our throats doing promo and such
rogue 23rd-Mar-2013 03:36 am (UTC)
i'm really not looking forward to aggressively hating another actress, i wish they would both vanish :(
lexy_ 23rd-Mar-2013 04:15 am (UTC)
ia about the franchises thing, but no one has grated on my nerves and made me want to set myself on fire as much as Jenflaw. She is the literal worst. I mostly just lol at Shailene bc of Secret Life.
sereniti_ii 23rd-Mar-2013 12:51 pm (UTC)
She's worse. At least Jennifer's got a reason to be pushed down everyone's throat, she has Weinstein behind her. This girl has zero.
madonna 23rd-Mar-2013 03:24 am (UTC)
tbh only if Leo signs on to play her husband will I not side eye her joining this MESS.
wapiko 23rd-Mar-2013 04:43 am (UTC)
LOL the character isn't married sadly...
madonna 23rd-Mar-2013 05:09 am (UTC)
mess, they can change it for the movie. he can just be her little bitch or something...
angelmonster 23rd-Mar-2013 04:20 am (UTC)
This story was such a rip off of The Giver it makes me so angry...plus it is SO SHITTY! It is just plain bad.
wapiko 23rd-Mar-2013 04:43 am (UTC)
Naturally, Roth's "Divergent" is the first book in a trilogy, giving Summit another shot at a massive "Twilight"/"Hunger Games"-style YA film franchise.

I love the Divergent trilogy, and I'm going to be so sad if this happens. I can kind of already sense it though. =(
la_oceane 23rd-Mar-2013 07:14 am (UTC)
w/e w/e I liked the first two books, excited for the third
samantha 23rd-Mar-2013 04:17 pm (UTC)
same here - no shame, tbh
chikntetrazzini 23rd-Mar-2013 08:41 am (UTC)
Oh yay, Jai Courtney! Good to see him around lately!
