A candle started the fire at Ashley Greene's condo

We now know what caused the fire at Ashley Greene's condo that killed her beloved dog -- an unattended candle ... TMZ has learned.

Law enforcement sources tell us ... they have already done a preliminary investigation and determined the candle lit the living room couch on fire -- a fire which spread throughout the unit.

As we previously reported, Greene, her boyfriend and brother were all sleeping in the condo when the blaze erupted.

In addition to the dog ... 3 people in the building were injured.

Just thinking about that dog makes me so sad :(

It's horrible. I feel awful for her.
trackies 23rd-Mar-2013 12:53 am (UTC)
The same thing happened to my best friend while her and her husband were on their honeymoon in 2010. Her husband's best friend was taking care of their dogs throughout the day at their apartment and left a fan on that malfunctioned and caught fire. Only one of their two dogs survived. It was devastating.
squishinator 23rd-Mar-2013 01:03 am (UTC)
OMG I know it was an accident and not really his fault but I'd probably never speak to that guy again.
dubiously 23rd-Mar-2013 01:56 am (UTC)
I had a friend whose apartment burned up because of a ceiling fan. I never use mine anymore because I always think about that. So sad, I'm sorry about your friends' dog.
steffibunny 23rd-Mar-2013 02:55 am (UTC)
Wow I leave the fan on when I go out in the summer D: So scary that it could have caused a fire.
galagooo 23rd-Mar-2013 04:57 am (UTC)
I had to get some part of my air conditioner taken out of the ceiling and replaced because my entire apartment started to fill with smoke coming out of the vents.

When I was a kid, our family went on vacation for a few weeks. My mom had her friend take care of the house including our four parakeets. When we got back, one was already dead and the rest seemed very lethargic. The reason? She didn't give them water. She filled up both dishes with food but no water. Because she's a moron. All but one ended up dying.
vehiclesshockme 23rd-Mar-2013 12:58 am (UTC)
Seriously. When I got home I gave all of my pets big hugs. :(
tebtosca 23rd-Mar-2013 01:49 am (UTC)
I came home from work and cuddled my dog for 30mins
swissbeauty23 23rd-Mar-2013 01:54 am (UTC)
same :( i can't even
treradical 23rd-Mar-2013 03:45 am (UTC)
same. i'm just imagining how terrified my dogs would be and i want to cry :(
limberwolf 23rd-Mar-2013 12:15 am (UTC)
tbh this is why i don't own candles

my cats would knock that shit over in ten minutes
saintvlas22 23rd-Mar-2013 12:18 am (UTC)
Yup. I want to enjoy candles, but my fear of simple fucking gravity knocking one down to the floor makes me accept adjustable lights as my version of mood lighting.
shanny_w 23rd-Mar-2013 12:20 am (UTC)
last power outage i had my cat jumped onto my candles twice!! she got wax all over her belly and paw. i'm glad she didn't catch fire. i had to put my candles way up on the fridge.
sweet_honesty 23rd-Mar-2013 12:22 am (UTC)
I own them but they are never lit because. My cats. One of my cats will try to stick her face in the gas stove when it's on...if she's not smart enough to figure that one out, she's not smart enough for candles to be lit.
heyx_lyla 23rd-Mar-2013 12:29 am (UTC)
My cats haven't knocked any down but there was one night, years ago, when we smelled something burning but couldn't find where it was coming from. Turns out, cat was sitting next to a candle that was on a higher shelf and stuck her tail in it. Somehow, she failed to realize this and ended up with scorched fur tip of her tail :x
laurshel 23rd-Mar-2013 12:44 am (UTC)
I feel awful for laughing a little at that
aria_grace 23rd-Mar-2013 02:27 am (UTC)
aww poor baby!
elvenqueen86 23rd-Mar-2013 12:37 am (UTC)
My mom and little sister are forever leaving the house with candles still lit and it drives me INSANE. I put them out and they come home and ask why I did that O_o wtf.
annadraper 23rd-Mar-2013 12:39 am (UTC)
THIS

people think i'm weird for being anti-candle, but fuck that. i KNOW candles and my cats don't mix.
ekrelly 23rd-Mar-2013 12:48 am (UTC)
I'm lucky because my cat has a neurological condition and can't jump so when my candles are on a table or shelf, she can't get to them. She just stares at them from afar.
empirebird 23rd-Mar-2013 12:51 am (UTC)
my mom bought me LED lanterns for power outages. Candles are so risky.
vehiclesshockme 23rd-Mar-2013 12:59 am (UTC)
I can't have candles because of my cats. The one isn't very smart and always tries to sniff the flame.
misscrystal 23rd-Mar-2013 01:01 am (UTC)
I love candles, but I only buy the ones in big heavy glass jars. The freestanding ones are an accident waiting to happen.
trinigren 23rd-Mar-2013 01:02 am (UTC)
Me too. And I always get so nervous if i'm visiting family overnight and electricity goes. They light candles and I feel like i'm in an inferno waiting to happen.
diggingtrouble 23rd-Mar-2013 01:31 am (UTC)
one of my cats jumped up by the stove whenever the burners were still hot and burned half his whiskers off a few years ago

ever since i discovered scentsy idgaf about candles anyway
swissbeauty23 23rd-Mar-2013 01:55 am (UTC)
i rarely light mine and if i do i'm super careful with it
corona_boreal 23rd-Mar-2013 01:59 am (UTC)
it's understandable. we have candle lanterns and they prevent the cats to touch the fire inside and knock the candles, but even without animals at home, leaving a candle unattended is a no go.

mhfromnh 23rd-Mar-2013 02:12 am (UTC)
I have fake tea-lights. last power-outage I needed a nightlight, and those suckers can last 8 hours easily.
psubookworm27 23rd-Mar-2013 02:44 am (UTC)
I don't get why anyone buys them anymore. Tart warmers, etc. work just as well.
hisjulliet 23rd-Mar-2013 05:31 am (UTC)
Whenever there's a blackout in my city there's always some houses that catch fire because of candles. Candles can be very dangerous people have to be more cautious.
sapphybelle 23rd-Mar-2013 08:09 am (UTC)
I own them and use them but I only light them when I'm in close enough proximity to blow them out AND I don't put them in places where the cats could get to easily. I would never leave one lit if I was going to go to sleep :/ that's just asking for trouble.
anarchist_love 23rd-Mar-2013 12:15 am (UTC)
So sad! For her home, dogs, and the people that were injured.

skeletwin 23rd-Mar-2013 12:16 am (UTC)
poor pup :(
skeet_skeet 23rd-Mar-2013 12:17 am (UTC)
This is why when I was growing up my mother was so anal about candles being extinguished before anyone leaving the house or people going to bed.
romann 23rd-Mar-2013 12:49 am (UTC)
I'm the exact same way.
insideout 23rd-Mar-2013 01:01 am (UTC)
Hell, I rarely ever leave a candle lit in a room that I'm not in. If I am leaving the room for more than 2 minutes to take a piss, the candle gets blown out!
mollywobbles867 23rd-Mar-2013 01:53 am (UTC)
I'm the same way except during power outages.
aria_grace 23rd-Mar-2013 02:28 am (UTC)
same.
eomir 23rd-Mar-2013 02:30 am (UTC)
I'm the same. The candle is only lit if I'm in the room with it.
splitsevenways 23rd-Mar-2013 02:25 am (UTC)
I keep a working flashlight with batteries for situations like this! No need for candles that will burn everything down.
heure_actuelle 23rd-Mar-2013 02:51 am (UTC)
my parents didn't even let me have candles
metalheavy 23rd-Mar-2013 09:03 am (UTC)
My mom was the same way and then eventually it switched. Now she'll leave candles in her bathroom unattended and I have to nag her to not forget about them. She also once told me she'll sometimes forget to turn her flat iron off and I went apeshit on her. She thought I was overreacting.
lumosofmylife 23rd-Mar-2013 12:17 am (UTC)
People really need to get it together when it comes to candles! Sharon Osbourne started a fire in her house for leaving a candle lit when she went to bed.

I was at my boyfriend's parent's house and we were in the basement and assumed his parents were home. We went upstairs later and his parents were gone but candles were still lit and they have big dogs that could have knocked them over.
shanny_w 23rd-Mar-2013 12:18 am (UTC)
my mama has a fake candle that looks pretty real and at first i thought it was stupid but i'm glad she sleeps with that and not a real light one. rip doggy :'(
splitsevenways 23rd-Mar-2013 02:26 am (UTC)
They're super useful and (if used right) won't burn your house down!
shanny_w 23rd-Mar-2013 02:36 am (UTC)
battery candles are burnin houses down now too?
mothflavour 23rd-Mar-2013 12:20 am (UTC)
:( I pretty much never light candles, unless someone is with me. I'm too much of a space case and I'm sure something like this would happen. I feel so bad for her:(
tinydevastation 23rd-Mar-2013 12:20 am (UTC)
Makes sense. I've seen it plenty of times.

My neighbor's house caught fire last year after his wife left a lit candle in the kitchen. The curtains ended up catching for some reason and only their daughter's room was spared, everything else was either burned or had a lot of water damage.
xxpreciosa 23rd-Mar-2013 12:21 am (UTC)
:(
silentxstrom 23rd-Mar-2013 12:22 am (UTC)
that is so terrible. it's so common that people leave candles lit and forget about them. I really hope she's able to recover emotionally from losing her house and pet in one day. :(
licorrice 23rd-Mar-2013 12:23 am (UTC)
that poor doggie, and a candle really? how reckless.
georgie_georgie 23rd-Mar-2013 12:23 am (UTC)
That's why I hate candles.
eaglefan2011 23rd-Mar-2013 01:00 am (UTC)
same
foxxywith2xs 23rd-Mar-2013 01:44 am (UTC)
me too. my sister always leaves them burning and goes into a different room.
unclesamonmars 23rd-Mar-2013 12:24 am (UTC)
I have a lot of candles but I don't light any that aren't in the same room as me because I am TERRIFIED of one of them starting a fire and not seeing it until it's too late. It'd be nice if people were more careful but I understand accidents happen.... my neighbor's house burned down because of an unattended stove top.
hjohnson 23rd-Mar-2013 01:08 am (UTC)
Most of my candles are in a big jar so I dont have anxiety with leaving it because once it burns out, it just burns out you know? Maybe I should be concerned but they're usually in a place where my cat can't reach, and they're heavy so they can't really move on their own.
frenchverbs 23rd-Mar-2013 01:34 am (UTC)
Same. I light candles in my home office I always place it within eyeshot. I also have fire extinguishers right next to the table where I place the candle.
calinewarkwc69 23rd-Mar-2013 12:25 am (UTC)
How sad! Still grieving for her pup!!!

Also, I knew it was a candle. I'm such an asshole.
psubookworm27 23rd-Mar-2013 02:46 am (UTC)
Since it was a couch, I was going with roach, ngl.
