Sherlock Episode 3:1 - The Empty Hearse

The title of the new episode of Sherlock has been announced as The Empty Hearse.

Sherlock co-creator and star Mark Gatiss unveiled the name of the new episode on Twitter, along with a photo of the clapperboard from the set of filming.

The clapperboard also bears the name of Jeremy Lovering, the director of the episode.

The premise of the first episode is set to be based on the original Sir Arthur Conan Doyle story The Adventure Of The Empty House, in which villain Sebastian Moran is introduced.

Gatiss has previously said of the episode: ‘There’s certain things about ‘The Adventure of the Empty House’ which feel set in stone because that’s how Sherlock comes back, but at the same time we feel free to invent and to introduce new stuff to it.’

The BBC1 Twitter account has also teased: ‘Sherlock read-through over, plenty of surprises in store for series three!’

Sherlock fans have reacted with excitement to the news of the new episode title, with one tweeting: ‘Lord help me, I’m hyperventilating right now! I can’t WAIT for new Sherlock.’

Another speculated: ‘The Empty Hearse…. I guess there’s something to do with Sherlock faking his death.’

The only one I can see being true is the theory that Sherlock used the small ball he was playing with in an earlier scene to stop his pulse. But that's just a small part.

Molly definitely did something major to help, esp. since Moriarty underestimated her and didn't count her amongst Sherlock's friends. And I think there's something significant about Sherlock's cell phone and the way he kinda hides it in his hand during his talk with Moriarty and then throws it away before jumping. And of course the dude on the bike who knocks John down. ...But I totes don't have a full answer. O____o

Well, he jumps off of the building where she works, and an ambulance crew is ready right away. My guess is that she makes sure he's declared dead immediately so he'll come down to the morgue and she can help him escape.

I think the dude on the bike is definitely part of the homeless network put in place to make sure John doesn't get to his body first.
