Melissa McCarthy working with Bill Murray?

Ladies and gentlemen, start your Oscar prognostication.

Deadline writes that Melissa McCarthy is close to a deal to star in The Weinstein Company’s St. Vincent De Van Nuys, a dramedy that was named one of Hollywood’s best unproduced screenplays by 2011′s Black List.

(The script was awarded the same number of votes as Quentin Tarantino’s then-unproduced Django Unchained.)

The project, written and directed by Ted Melfi, already had Bill Murray attached to star as a misanthropic retiree who forms an unlikely friendship with his 12-year-old neighbor. McCarthy would star as the boy’s single mother.

Though its plot superficially resembles About a Boy, insiders have compared the film to As Good As It Gets and Silver Linings Playbook — two romances that melded comedy with emotion and earned 15 cumulative Oscar nominations. Jack Nicholson, Helen Hunt, and Jennifer Lawrence’s wins indicate that gold could be in reach for both Murray and McCarthy, who have each been nominated once before — provided Melfi’s finished product lives up to expectations.

I love how, since Bridesmaids, she's basically poised to become America's sweetheart. Get that second Oscar nom, Sookie!

she's a one trick pony sry2say
evawhimsy 12th-Mar-2013 10:43 pm (UTC)
her performance as sookie is so different from her performance in bridesmaids though. but i haven't really seen her in much else recently.
drkshdw 12th-Mar-2013 10:47 pm (UTC)
so are most actors tbh.
lillylilacs 12th-Mar-2013 10:49 pm (UTC)
idts (see GG), but I do think with Bridesmaids success she is being typecast.
thelovehater 12th-Mar-2013 11:11 pm (UTC)
I agree, she can do more but IDK if Hollywood is as interested in her subtle performances as they are interested in her hamming it up and being over the top, ridiculous.

She definitely is which sucks because she is so much better than this one role she keeps getting offered
sexmeupscotty 12th-Mar-2013 11:52 pm (UTC)
no.
she's amazing, but right now she is being typecast.
hjohnson 13th-Mar-2013 12:07 am (UTC)
And what movies of hers have you seen?
enema_recipe 13th-Mar-2013 12:15 am (UTC)
I don't agree. But this film will prove if she is or isn't tbh. I think she'll do well as a romantic lead.
twowaymirrrors 13th-Mar-2013 01:52 am (UTC)
No, she's just continually being typecast after Bridesmaids
treebraids 13th-Mar-2013 11:47 am (UTC)
her character in bridesmaids, GG and MM are all different tho. And I say this as someone who isn't a fan and doesn't get the hype.
hoechlingurl 12th-Mar-2013 10:42 pm (UTC)
The plot seems basic so why was it blacklisted...or was it blacklisted because it was so basic-anyway here Melissa breaking those HW stereotypes.
ms_mmelissa 12th-Mar-2013 10:52 pm (UTC)
The Black List is a list where Hollywood insiders vote on their favourite unproduced screenplay. They're not blacklisting the script, it's actually a big honour to be mentioned.
klutzy_girl 12th-Mar-2013 10:43 pm (UTC)
This sounds interesting! I'm in.
allysqpkt 12th-Mar-2013 10:43 pm (UTC)
I'd watch her in a Nicholas Sparks movie. I really would.
*edit: Heck even a Michael Bay or Joel Schumacher one.

I love her sfm. I love that on SNL she seemed genuinely happy to be there. She has worked under the radar for so long, her success is even THAT more inspiring to me.
abcdlovelife 12th-Mar-2013 10:47 pm (UTC)
everybody is so thirsty for oscars lordt

ms_mmelissa 12th-Mar-2013 11:06 pm (UTC)
Well, winning does mean access to better roles/more money. Although given some Oscar winners post Oscar choices maybe it's better when they have fewer options...
abiding 12th-Mar-2013 10:49 pm (UTC)
Damn, how many more movies will Weinstein be pushing for Oscar contention?
redfield79 12th-Mar-2013 11:02 pm (UTC)
yeah I only call her sookie...
queen_norleans 12th-Mar-2013 11:10 pm (UTC)
I feel like she's going to suffer from overexposure.

When I saw her pop up in The Hangover 3 trailer, I was like OH COME ON.

I think she is talented but does that mean she has to show up as essentially the same character in every single silly movie?
takingthewalk 12th-Mar-2013 11:24 pm (UTC)
I was happy when I saw her in that trailer. I was like, if they're gonna use the same 4 year old "we got wasted and can't remember a thing!" joke again and it doesn't work, at least Melissa will be there and be funny.
queen_norleans 12th-Mar-2013 11:29 pm (UTC)
I don't know, I guess I just don't "get" her. And I feel like she keeps getting cast in parts that are supposed to be funny for almost no reason other than how she looks. Which bothers me because I don't think anyone should be treated like that.
warsawed 12th-Mar-2013 11:10 pm (UTC)
the haters confuse me

she is perfect
bodylikemind 12th-Mar-2013 11:10 pm (UTC)
idg how she got the oscar nomination for bridesmaids like really...
ms_mmelissa 12th-Mar-2013 11:13 pm (UTC)
Oscars are a popularity contest and people love her. Besides, Bridesmaids was such a huge hit commercially/critically Hollywood wanted to reward it and screenplay and BSA were the most logical choices.
thelovehater 12th-Mar-2013 11:15 pm (UTC)
Where is the movie where Melissa and Rebel Wilson travel across America in a convertible and have sex with hot men.
enema_recipe 13th-Mar-2013 12:22 am (UTC)
I'd watch that
publicfrenemy 13th-Mar-2013 12:31 am (UTC)
hollywood is not ready for such an ingenious revelation.
takingthewalk 12th-Mar-2013 11:23 pm (UTC)
oh my god agreed. Besides the fact that I enjoy staring at Paul Rudd, that movie had nothing going for it except Melissa and John Lithgow.
takingthewalk 12th-Mar-2013 11:22 pm (UTC)
I've loved her since GG and I am so happy about where her career has gone. I saw Identity Thief and it was so bad, like painful to sit through, but her dramatic scenes were top notch. She was amazing.
sophielt 12th-Mar-2013 11:25 pm (UTC)
at least she'll be doing something different. it sounds like she'll have to tone it down a little, which might be nice. i can't stand her as of right now.
