Marvin Gaye's ex-wife urges Jesse L. Martin to quit biopic

Janis Hunter, who was married to the star from 1977 to 1981, is furious about plans to document Gaye's life in a new biopic called Sexual Healing, which will be directed by filmmaker Julien Temple.

Rocker Kravitz recently quit the lead role and was replaced by the former Law & Order star, who had previously been attached to the project in its early stages, and Hunter has now urged Martin to walk away from the movie.

She tells the New York Daily News, "Ultimately, I think it was Lenny's heart and soul and conscience that caused him to step away. Hopefully, that touches Jesse in the same way."

Hunter is also angry about a play called My Brother Marvin, based on the book of the same name by the singer's sister Zeola Gaye, which is currently touring the U.S.

She adds, "I don't think Marvin is a very happy spirit right now. This is the last thing he would want to have happen...

"I haven't read the script (of the play), but it's supposed to be based on (Zeola Gaye's) book and I did read the book from cover to cover, and it was very difficult to read."

The Sexual Healing hitmaker was shot dead by his father during an altercation in 1984.

How does the rest of his family feel about this?
evett 11th-Mar-2013 09:25 pm (UTC)
What is her problem with his sister's book? Is she saying it is full of lies or something?

Also I do like that she knows the mood of his spirit.

Spirit mood rings are great

I haven't read her book but I wonder if it has something to do about Marvin Gaye III not being adopted but actually Anna's underaged (at the time of conception) cousin's child.

IA. Such a chill album. One of those albums you listen to on a rainy afternoon, and get cozy.

PERFECT album, tbh.

IDK - Lenny was (and still is) a longtime family friend of theirs and I do think he dropped out because they asked him too but that's not something that would work with a complete stranger. wop wop
westamp 12th-Mar-2013 04:41 pm (UTC)
I think it was mentioned that Lenny was childhood friends with the son so maybe they guilted him into dropping out? Really, I don't know why they are trying to make Marvin Gaye a saint. He was a great musician but he also had flaws. The coverup is too much.
spartacus 11th-Mar-2013 09:42 pm (UTC)
I don't think he gaf right now

I can't think of anything more respectful to Marvin than Jesse playing him.
scriptedending 11th-Mar-2013 09:57 pm (UTC)
Ever since he left Law & Order I have missed seeing him on a routine basis. And his seasons are not on Netflix. :P

So...what's her issue with the book/movie? I hate articles that need back story. =/

I came here hoping to find out too

According to Janis, both the play “My Brother Marvin” and the upcoming Julien Temple film, “Sexual Healing,” will focus on the final years of Marvin’s life, which were plagued by depression and drug abuse. She’s especially bothered by the play, which allegedly presents Janis in a negative light.
“I haven’t read the script, but it’s supposed to be based on (sister Zeola Gaye’s) book and I did read the book from cover to cover, and it was very difficult to read,” she tells Confidenti@l. She called it sensational and questioned its accuracy.
“Some of the characterizations, like saying Marvin’s father killing him was a ‘mercy killing,’ you can only imagine how that makes the kids feel,” she says, referring to her and Marvin’s 38-year-old daughter, Nona, and 37-year-old son, Frankie. “It makes me feel bad enough.”

I have mixed feelings about that sort of thing. The Runaways was largely based on Joan's book, which is why it focused in her a lot without revealing much. On a narrative level, not much is gained by turning Marvin's wife into a shrew character. Audiences love music couples. I wonder if this woman did some bad things that she doesn't want to end up in the movie.
bluecupxxx 11th-Mar-2013 11:52 pm (UTC)
Awesome, thanks for the backstory! That part about the mercy killing would be a bit over the top, imo, but I generally question the motives of people really opposed to biographical films of their deceased s.o. since I don't get the feeling that a film maker or studio would spend so much on a film that had no point but to be insulting.

It sucks in this type of situation because if her concerns are legit there isn't really anyway to know until the film is mostly done. Before then I doubt anyone will take her complaints seriously, and then if they are true it'll be too late.
it_has_been 11th-Mar-2013 10:12 pm (UTC)
I'm so confused by all of this - 1) why is she so pressed about something his sister did and 2) what the hell is the difference if this martin guy plays marvin or kravitz?

is she mad she's not making money off of this or something?

this article needs more information
numbedtoe 11th-Mar-2013 10:31 pm (UTC)
i'm wondering if in part she's mad she's not getting any money. i know she has problems with Marvin's sister's book but anytime a bio comes up and there are a ton of people who get all self important.
it_has_been 11th-Mar-2013 10:40 pm (UTC)
i'm not a huge marvin gaye fan and i don't know all the deets around this whole drama but 80% of the time when people kick up huge fusses like this it's over money

idk maybe she has legit things to be offended by in this film who knows
omgthatsfun 11th-Mar-2013 11:24 pm (UTC)
I think her problem is that the biopic is being made at all, not the actors.
numbedtoe 11th-Mar-2013 10:29 pm (UTC)
So she knows how his spirit feels huh? idk if I were Marvin I'd be a helluva lot more pissed with idk, my dad shooting me dead, than I would with one of the finest, and most underrated actors of his generation, playing me in a movie.
