Dexter's Jennifer Carpenter on Women's Running cover

Jennifer Carpenter talks running

CELEBRITY COVER GIRL

Dexter’s brunette beauty Jennifer Carpenter recently graced the cover of the Women’s Running March issue, and we have the scoop on her love of running, her favorite “bad” workout song and even the actor she’d most like to run with.

It’s no surprise to us why Carpenter is this month’s Women’s Running cover girl. It’s pretty evident by the gorgeous photo that she’s been running a lot (just take a look at her amazing abs).

On New York, rejuvenation and running

The bicoastal, three-time marathon runner lives in New York City during the Dexter off-season and thrives on the fast-paced energy. “I like to come here [New York] in between filming to reset,” she says. “Even though you can go a hundred miles per hour here, it rejuvenates me somehow.”

You just don’t want to mess with her if she needs to get to her running shoes. She once broke into her building in Soho to get them — during Hurricane Sandy. “I forgot the keys to my building, so I scaled six stories up the fire escape to get inside,” she says. “The Italian restaurant next door let me climb onto their first-floor fire escape. My hands started shaking somewhere near the third floor. At the top, this guy recognized me through his window and let me in.” Before she could explain what she was doing, he asked if he could get a picture. “I had just done Kelly and Michael that morning, so I was in full hair and makeup.”

Hurricane relief

Originally set to run in the New York Marathon for Every Mother Counts (EMC), a nonprofit founded by supermodel-turned-activist Christy Turlington Burns, Carpenter put her efforts into something even more pressing when Hurricane Sandy cancelled the event. “I woke at 8 a.m. [on the day the marathon would have taken place] and went to Queens to volunteer in Rockaway with my Marine friend, Zach, and some other guys who are involved with this great disaster-relief organization called Team Rubicon,” she says. “The first house we visited, we did a week’s worth of work — picking up debris, digging out sand, tearing down walls in just a couple of hours. It was disgusting, gross and hard, but no one stopped. I don’t think we even took a water break.”

More fun tidbits about Jennifer Carpenter

She’s gorgeous, strong, caring and talented, but did you also know Carpenter has a favorite (awesomely bad) workout song? “I love old-school Britney Spears, especially ‘Toxic.’ I’m listening to it right now in my head. I like running to music when I know all the words.”

The ravishing runner would also like to run alongside fellow actor Peter Sarsgaard one day. “He is writing and directing the film adaption of Christopher McDougall’s best-selling book Born to Run. I’d love to hit the trails with him some time.”

I hate running. I wish I could enjoy it.

My workouts include Zumba, Zumba Toning and Sentao (Zumba with a chair), yoga, and Barre Method. (5-6 days a week).

Whatever works for you. Running is not for everyone. I hate it, too.
another_grl 11th-Mar-2013 06:06 pm (UTC)
That's true.

I lost 60 pounds doing Zumba and the elliptical, so I feel like that's what works best for me.

For the life of me, though, I cannot do the elliptical anymore. I used to do it for 50-60 minutes almost every day. It's so boring now!
inthedirtyrain 11th-Mar-2013 06:17 pm (UTC)
I'm the same. It's just not for me. Instead, I do hot (infrared) yoga at a studio and aerobics at home. I found this great 5 min workout video on YouTube that I do every day on my yoga mat. It's so easy and quicky and I just plug it into the tv with my HDMI and watch the tv. (And ignore the instructor's tedious 'I'm so tired' act.)

I hate running but I really want to slim my thighs so that my muscles (quads mostly) actually show their defintion...so I will probably have to pick it up or do some cycling. (I'm more of a HIIT person)

Ugh, yes. Running sucks, but I really love dancing. You should try pole! It's a great workout.

I posted it last week and it was up for most of the day and then I went to look at the comments later that night and it said the post couldn't be found. So either the mods deleted it for some reason or LJ ate it

pickledprose 11th-Mar-2013 06:03 pm (UTC)
i feel like this is posted not that i'm mad about it

i basically need an excuse to whine about my running

i took three days off then went yesterday and i don't know if it's because i watched a ballet documentary and was inspired to get up on my toes right before i went but the whole run was a fucking nightmare omg. my shins were killing me. i gave up after 28 minutes with frequent breaks because i didn't want to fuck myself up permanently again. i want to go again today but i'm scared so i've just been stretching and watching movies for 30 minutes.
ediesedgwick 11th-Mar-2013 06:06 pm (UTC)
shin splints SUCK do lots of stretching for your calves during your down time

I read once that you should stand on one foot, lift the other and "spell" the alphabet in the air, it helps the muscles relax a little bit. one time each leg. it worked for me!
summerstar882 11th-Mar-2013 06:03 pm (UTC)
I love and tried on that very sports bra but found when paired over a fitted sports tank you could see the stitching through the shirt. Unflattering as hell.

Started working my way back to running three days a week after taking a week off after running my first half marathon at Disney in Feb. (awesome!). I'm contemplating going for the full 26.2 in Jan. I'm insane O_O

I swear by Target sports bras. They are cheap (comparatively), but they definitely support me (I'm 36D)
chaquitalicia04 11th-Mar-2013 07:53 pm (UTC)
Same on all aspects.
meiliguniang 11th-Mar-2013 07:18 pm (UTC)
my friend has run the Disney marathon a bunch of times and she said it's her favorite marathon (she's run over 25 different in about as many states), so I think you should go for it!
_pinkpornstar_ 11th-Mar-2013 06:06 pm (UTC)
Boobs make running so hard. I have to wear 2 sports bras at a time when I work out.
open0rclosed 11th-Mar-2013 06:37 pm (UTC)
Same. So annoying.
voyevoda 11th-Mar-2013 06:44 pm (UTC)
I was like that until I got a Freya underwired sports bra. <3 Now them puppies stay put.
dirtyxboots 11th-Mar-2013 07:09 pm (UTC)
wearing 2 is such a good idea! but same there's always some uncomfortable bounce action =/

I love her so much!

I really need to do some more working out, but I absolutely hate just repetitive movement. I do a lot of yoga (mostly power classes) and I really love them, and I want to get into zumba but I'm too poor to do any more classes/join any more clubs. SAD.
another_grl 11th-Mar-2013 06:10 pm (UTC)
When I was on short time from work and had to cut out my money for Zumba classes, I would find videos from YouTube and do them in my basement. It's not the same, but it worked for me (and I got to choose what songs I wanted.)

Where I go it's $40/month unlimited, which is actually really cheap. Some places are over $100/month for a set number of classes.
inthedirtyrain 11th-Mar-2013 06:22 pm (UTC)
That's exactly what I do. I just find vids on YouTube. For yoga, I knew I had to go to classes cause dealing with things like spinal alignment you have to be really careful so I needed guidance for that but, instead of paying for a gym membership on top of yoga classes, I just find YouTube workout vids and do 20 push ups a day but I've done that for a long time.
open0rclosed 11th-Mar-2013 06:36 pm (UTC)
I hear ya. Gyms around my area are $60-70 a month and I just cannot afford it. So I'm starting to learn how to run. Figured it was cheapest.

Brunette beauty....ahahahahahahahah. Her face always makes me irrationally angry, lol
