20 Iconic & Memorable Movie Death Scenes

Tomorrow sees the release of "The ABCs Of Death," a new horror anthology from some of the top new names in the genre, with a fairly similar premise: 26 directors, 26 very short films, 26 very different ways to die. From the apocalypse to Zetsumetsu, there's all kinds of inventive ways to be offed across its two-hour running time, and it's sure to keep gorehounds entertained, as our review suggested, even if horror neophytes might be left scratching their heads.

But for all the passings on screen in "The ABCs of Death," it doesn't seem likely that any will really enter cinema history. Death is just about the most dramatic thing that can happen, and as such, is at the heart of many great films and some of cinema's most iconic shots and moments involve one character or another popping off their mortal coil, either peacefully or not. So, to celebrate the release of "The ABCs of Death," we've put together a firmly non-comprehensive list of some of the most memorable, iconic demises in the history of cinema. Take a look below, and let us know your personal favorites in the comments section.

Not a movie death, but the ER post a couple below made me remember this. This whole episode was so epic and tragic

vehiclesshockme 10th-Mar-2013 11:38 pm (UTC)
This was one of the greatest and most heartbreaking things I've ever seen on TV.

my friend tricked me into watching it. i said i didn't to watch a movie if the plot revolved around an animal dying, and she said it didn't. LITTLE DID I KNOW THAT THE ACTUAL PLOT WAS LIKE A THOUSAND TIMES SADDER.
n0cturnaleakage 11th-Mar-2013 12:20 am (UTC)
I just can't do it.
palmthejoker 11th-Mar-2013 01:58 am (UTC)

God I watched this with a guy who I was seeing. It was probably the worst idea I ever had. But I can never explain this movie to anyone because I get teary eyed and upset.

Not really a death scene, but a reaction scene. Basically everything after Richard Gere dies in Hachi...

and then the end when Hachi himself finally dies.

that movie basically dehydrated me, i cried so much. i even cry if i tell someone the plot of the movie and they want to know the end. IT'S JUST SO SAD

piratesswoop 10th-Mar-2013 11:52 pm (UTC)
omg i just posted a clip up above but yes

i watched it for the first time one day, no idea what i was getting myself into. should've known, dog movies always end badly. i was a fucking mess, tears and snot running down my face for the last half hour of the film and YEP i'm the exact same, i was explaining the plot to my friend a couple weeks ago and teared up. even he said he got chills as i spoke.

Ugh @ this unnecessary (and unnecessarily brutal) death.

I haven't seen Skins in ages (watched it with the original cast and only saw a couple of episodes with Freddie and the gang) but this is kind of shocking. I Googled to see who that guy was and he sure is a psycho. Poor Freddie.
_keng_ Re: not a movie11th-Mar-2013 03:15 am (UTC)
I was more upset over Chris's ending. Freddie's was just so fucking random.
hewontgo Re: not a movie11th-Mar-2013 09:17 am (UTC)
i am still not over Chris' death

Millennium Actress. The ending of this film leaves me blow me away every-time.

'After all, it's the chase I love' and I start howling tbh.

Urgh actual favourite film of all time.

For the somewhat obscure, the endings of Looking For Mr. Goodbar and Fat Girl are :O in every sense.

I know we can't post full lists but seriously OP? Just five? Of 20? Pretty sure it's ok to post a bit more than that.
