'ER': Where Are They Now?

It's been nearly 19 years since "ER" first brought the doctors and nurses of County General Hospital into living rooms across the country; it's been almost four years since the show went off the air. The series introduced viewers to dozens of great actors, including George Clooney, Noah Wyle, and Julianna Margulies, who have all gone on to be heavy hitters in entertainment.

Noah Wyle (Dr. John Carter)

Noah Wyle has the honor of having appeared in the most episodes of "ER." For 11 seasons, he played Dr. John Carter, earning five Emmy nominations for his role. He came back for the final season, racking up a total of 254 episodes. After leaving the series, Wyle starred in the TV movie franchise "The Librarian" and gave a critically acclaimed performance in Oliver Stone's "W." In 2011, he made a triumphant return to the small screen in the Steven Spielberg series "Falling Skies," playing the heroic Tom Mason, a college professor who leads a battle against an alien invasion.

Wyle recently had an on-stage "ER" reunion with Julianna Margulies. Wyle and Margulies presented the award for Outstanding Ensemble in a Comedy Series at the 19th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards on January 27, 2013.

Off-camera, Wyle is a dedicated activist fighting most notably for causes like animal rights and protections for people with disabilities. In 2012, he was arrested for participating in a protest with ADAPT to urge Congress not to cut Medicaid funding that would affect the disabled

George Clooney (Dr. Doug Ross)

Arguably the most successful "ER" alum, George Clooney rose to stardom with his work in "Ocean's Eleven" and his Oscar-winning role in "Syriana." He made his directorial debut with "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind" and received his first directing Oscar nod for "Good Night and Good Luck." In more recent years, Clooney has lit up the big screen in "Up in the Air" and "The Descendants." This year, he has another shot at taking home an Oscar as producer of best-picture nominee "Argo."

Aside from his onscreen accomplishments, he has made a name for himself as a great humanitarian. From organizing star-studded telethons after crises like the 9/11 attacks and the Haiti earthquake to his work advocating an end to genocide in Darfur, Clooney has used his fame for good, earning the 2010 Bob Hope Humanitarian Award.

Clooney recently had a mini-"ER" reunion with Julianna Margulies on the red carpet at the Golden Globes, where they joked with Ryan Seacrest that they've known each other for "several years."

Julianna Margulies (Nurse Carol Hathaway)

Julianna Margulies played George Clooney's love interest and eventual baby mama on "ER" from Seasons 1 through 6. After leaving the series, she initially struggled to maintain the notoriety she had gained playing Nurse Carol Hathaway.

She appeared in such films as "The Man from Elysian Fields," "Ghost Ship," and "Snakes on a Plane." On TV, she appeared in "Scrubs," "The Sopranos," and "The Grid." She got another shot as a leading lady in the TV series "Canterbury's Law" in 2008, but it was canceled after just six episodes. Still, the experience in the legal drama prepared her for her current smash hit, "The Good Wife." She has earned two Emmy nominations and one win for playing Alicia Florrick, the wife of a disgraced state attorney who forges ahead to become a successful attorney despite her difficult home life.

Eriq La Salle (Dr. Peter Benton)

Eriq La Salle played the slightly arrogant single dad Dr. Peter Benton on "ER" for eight seasons. While still acting on "ER," La Salle turned his sights to working behind the camera. He directed the TV movie "Rebound"; the feature "Crazy as Hell"; and such TV shows as "ER," "The Twilight Zone," "Law and Order: Special Victims Unit," and "Without a Trace." In 2012, he helmed the Hallmark TV movie "Playing Father," starring Michael Beach and Eddie Cibrian.

On the big screen, he moved on from playing Dr. Benton to appearing in the Robin Williams movie "One Hour Photo" and the crime drama "Johnny Was." On TV, he appeared in "Covert Affairs," "24," and HBO's "How to Make It in America." For one season last year, he played Evan Morris on "A Gifted Man" alongside Patrick Wilson. Their series was canceled after 16 episodes.

La Salle also published his first novel in 2012. "Laws of Depravity" is a crime drama about a serial killer who attacks clergymen.

Maura Tierney (Nurse/Dr. Abby Lockhart)

Maura Tierney's nurse-turned-doctor character, Abby Lockhart, was brought in as Julianna Margulies was leaving the series. Now, over a decade later, the two actresses are working together again in "The Good Wife." Tierney was cast as recurring character Maddie Hayward, a dot-com billionaire who runs for governor against Margulies' husband, Peter Florrick. She is slated to appear in at least 10 episodes.

Before the reunion with fellow "ER" alum Margulies, Tierney starred with Rob Morrow in "The Whole Truth," which was canceled after just four episodes. She also had a recurring role on "Rescue Me," playing Kelly McPhee, a love interest of Tommy Gavin (Denis Leary). In fall 2012, Tierney starred in "Ruth & Erica," a 13-episode YouTube series about aging and caregiving.

In 2010, Tierney was cast in and shot the pilot for the NBC series "Parenthood," but when she was diagnosed with breast cancer, she backed out of the series and was replaced by Lauren Graham. Tierney's cancer is now in remission.

Paul McCrane (Dr. Robert "Rocket" Romano)

For five seasons, Paul McCrane played Dr. Robert Romano, the most loathed physician at County General. But Romano's karma came back in the end when he was crushed by a helicopter.

While still on "ER," McCrane solidified his reputation for playing the bad guy when he appeared on "24" as Graem Bauer, Kiefer Sutherland's brother. After a few appearances on shows such as "Ugly Betty" and "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," McCrane became a recurring character on the legal series "Harry's Law." His turn as Josh Peyton, Kathy Bates's legal adversary, won the actor an Emmy in 2011. In 2012, he played Wesley Mouch in the sci-fi drama "Atlas Shrugged II: The Strike."

McCrane has also found success behind the camera. Most recently, he directed several episodes of "Nashville." In the last few years, he has helmed installments of "Vegas," "The Closer," "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," and "Harry's Law."

Ming-Na Wen (Dr. Jing-Mei Chen)

Ming-Na Wen first appeared as a guest star on "ER" in Season 1, playing med student Jing-Mei Chen. In Season 6, she was brought back as a series regular, now a resident, and stayed for five more seasons.

After leaving County General Hospital behind, Wen played Agent Lin Mei on "Vanished"; was one of Charlie Sheen's love interests on "Two and a Half Men"; and appeared in episodes of "Private Practice," "Boston Legal," and "George Lopez." She returned to series-regular status in 2009's sci-fi show "SGU Stargate Universe," playing Camille Wray. She then went on to "Eureka" as U.S. Sen. Michaela Wen. She is currently filming the new Joss Whedon ("Avengers" and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer") pilot "S.H.I.E.L.D.," with sights set on a spot in the fall 2013 ABC lineup. In the adaptation of the Marvel Comic, she plays Agent Melinda May -- pilot, soldier, and weapons expert.
