Shakira, Ricky Martin In 'The Voice': Latinos Taking Over Singing Competition

Latinos are taking over “The Voice” and all eyes are on them.

While this month Ricky Martin debuts as a “coach” for the Australian version of the singing TV competition show, Shakira is also shining as the only woman judge in the American version.

A new promo video introduces Martin, and highlights some of his best attributes as a ‘passionate, charismatic and sweet" artist with an extensive career.

Even his fellow mentors, singers Seal, Joel Madden (Good Charlotte vocalist) and Delta Goodrem, talk about how wonderful it is to have the Puerto Rican star on board as part of the project this year.

"He sold over 60 million albums. He has a career lasting 27 years," says Seal of his teammate.

Meanwhile, new images show Shaki fearless and very funny during the blind auditions.

“I’ve come here to be a mentor to people who had dreams like I once had,” says the Colombian star in the promo video.

Recently, Ricky has been spotted traveling with his two sons Mateo and Valentino, now that they are starting a new life in Australia. This year he is also expected to start a new TV show, and to publish his first children's book.

Shakira has also been making headlines with the announcement of the arrival of her first son Milan in January with boyfriend, Spanish soccer player, Gerard Piqué.

liselaime 10th-Mar-2013 03:17 pm (UTC)
Hmm, haven't heard anything about Ricky for years.

Shakira is cute. IDK how she can be on the show full time after having a baby so recently, though! I hope she isn't too overworked and has enough time to spend with him.
browneyedguuurl 10th-Mar-2013 03:28 pm (UTC)
He's been really involved in his charity work and being a father. He just finished a really successful run in Evita. He got rave reviews. So happy for him, he truly is a genuine person.
liselaime 10th-Mar-2013 03:35 pm (UTC)
Sounds like he has been doing way more important things than creating cheesy pop music. Good for him!

Shakira's done all the blind auditions while she was pregnant so really she'll only be doing the live shows which she can probably handle with her baby.

The only problem is the live shows come right at the end of the La Liga end of season and her partner is gonna be insanely busy so he wont get to see them as much :/
liselaime 10th-Mar-2013 05:43 pm (UTC)
Really? Weird. My friend's husband auditioned for the Voice just a few weeks ago in NYC (he didn't make the cut), so they were still doing the auditions then, after she had the baby. I wonder when they film the blind auditions as opposed to the open calls. That sounds like it'll be a tough schedule for her partner. I can't imagine being famous/traveling a lot and raising kids.
biene 10th-Mar-2013 05:46 pm (UTC)
She sure done all the blind auditions before the end of the year as she was due in January, thats weird about your friends husband though.
liselaime 10th-Mar-2013 06:03 pm (UTC)
Yeah, I googled and it looks like all of the auditions were in January and early February, so I don't think there's any way she could have attended. And obviously they have to have the open calls before the blind auditions--maybe some of the blinds were conducted in late February when she was recovered enough to film? The timing seems really weird. Oh, well! I'm looking forward to watching when it premieres anyway.

NBC should've gotten them for the USA version. You can tell they are going to be a lot of fun.

I honestly hope Shakira outshines Usher. He thinks he's got it locked down cuz of Bieber but I'd LOL if Shakira pulled a Blake and just shocked the fuck out of everyone.

Shakira <3!
run_atreyu 11th-Mar-2013 12:11 am (UTC)
I'm going to be a negative nancy and say two things:

1. LMAO at the idea of two Latinos involved being cause for news let alone any comments about them "taking over"? This is like when they do those studies on how much men and women talk, and the women talk less than the men but are incorrectly perceived as having talked way more than them. How uppity. I can't think of the proper word for it.

2. Do you think a straight male artist would ever be referred to as "sweet"?
flamed65 11th-Mar-2013 01:18 am (UTC)
well christina is also latina and she was the star of the biggest The Voice franchise, which now shakira, another latin pop star is taking over. Jlo was also v successful on American Idol. Mariah, Britney, and Kelly all flopped with their stints.

so ya, the biggest tv competition shows being headlines by latino pop stars constitutes as "taking over".
run_atreyu 11th-Mar-2013 04:36 am (UTC)
I know there are a lot of Latinas involved but IDT you get what I'm saying. I'm pleased as fuck there are lots of Latinos in these roles, but claiming it's a take over sounds like some pressed White writer who's used to their only being a single token Latin artist fronting these shows. If their wording were more like "positive numbers of Latinos helming popular shows" I wouldn't have mentioned it but using "taking over" implies there's some kind of token limit to which minorities should be adhering, and Latinos are uppity in inhabiting so many of these roles.
mynameyourname 11th-Mar-2013 04:55 am (UTC)
Lmao omg I am crying
flamed65 11th-Mar-2013 04:56 am (UTC)
"positive numbers of Latinos helming popular shows" sounds more like an industry study than a harmless and brief entertainment article tho
run_atreyu 11th-Mar-2013 05:00 am (UTC)
Yep sure. But the harmless and brief article is pointing out something about race, and that's rarely harmless even if it's in an entertainment article. It's not a neutral topic.
mynameyourname 11th-Mar-2013 05:02 am (UTC)
Wow @ u ruining a happy post

I bet ur white
run_atreyu 11th-Mar-2013 05:08 am (UTC)
How about you go away with your beautiful and super-valuable replies to all my comments. I said right up front I was going to be a negative nancy. If you don't like it, sod off and play with the other kids.
flamed65 11th-Mar-2013 05:12 am (UTC)
its harmless to beneficial when its empowering a minority tho
run_atreyu 11th-Mar-2013 05:23 am (UTC)
I take the article differently from you. If you (and others) see it as positive, then good.
mynameyourname 11th-Mar-2013 02:41 am (UTC)
and Demi lovato is also latina

so boom roasted
run_atreyu 11th-Mar-2013 04:37 am (UTC)
You should read my reply to the other commenter because I don't think you get my point. Lol @ 'boom, roasted' - is you 12?
mynameyourname 11th-Mar-2013 04:55 am (UTC)
Omg lol
