JKR: A 'Harry Potter' Prequel About the Marauders Will Never Happen

Harry Potter and The Casual Vacancy author J.K. Rowling spoke this evening at the Bath Literature Festival and made clear that if she ever returns to Harry Potter, she won’t write a prequel.

Rowling was asked about if she would return to the Harry Potter series like so many fans have hoped since 2007 to write about, as an example, the Marauders. She responded by saying that although she has no current plans to return to the series, if she did it would not be about the Marauders. The reason? She doesn’t find prequels to be any good. This would mean no stories about James, Lily, Sirius, Pettigrew, etc.

Elsewhere during the evening she said…
- Grindelwald never loved Dumbledore and used him.
- Her own first kiss came when she was 12 years old.
- Her next book will be aimed at 8-year-olds, but she’s still busy writing it.
- Her proudest moment was when she outed Dumbledore (as gay), and following the revelation in New York City a fan came up to her straight afterwords and revealed that he or she too is homosexual.

Hypable co-founder Richard Reid attended tonight’s event and reported back on the comments Rowling made. This is the author’s only planned public engagement in 2013.
The news of no Maurader prequels may come as a disappointment to fans who had hoped or thought that would be the perfect part of the Potter world to head into with a new book. Fans could also see her writing about Harry, Ron, and Hermione’s children – and luckily she hasn’t ruled that idea out (yet). Regardless, it’s nice to hear her still considering the idea of returning to the Wizarding World.

This is breaking my heart rn. </3  I never really thought she would, but I hate having it confirmed. What does she mean it wouldn't be "any good." I would read 500 pages of Sirius throwing spit balls at Snape, tbh...

JK needs to stay away from pre-existing major characters like the Marauders and the book series children.
I personally would read the shit out of Dumbledore's story (especially his relationship with Grindlewald) or how Hogwarts was founded and the rift between Slytherin and the rest.

Also, JK needs unbiased Slytherin characters. I would LOVE a Slytherin side story. Everyone is right by saying Marauders/HP taken any further would ruin headcanon - I mean, look how many people ignore the epilogue.

Good tbh. I don't think anything she could write would live up to people's expectations.

Honestly, I was never that interested in the Marauders pre-HP, even though Lupin is my favorite character. I'd probably have read an official prequel about them anyway, though.

I just want that encyclopedia tbh, assuming that's still happening.

Good. Let it die, fandom.

To be honest, I would prefer a pre-quel with the mauraders than a continuation with Harry and co.'s childs. The continuation sound SO bad in my mind that I can even bear to think about it coming true; but Mauraders' story still sounds interesting to fully read about.

I'm not a marauders stan by any stretch of the imagination, but that doesn't mean their story wouldn't be interesting to read about. Especially coming from Jo herself. Alas.

Hogwarts, a History, pls.
silly_izzy_me 9th-Mar-2013 04:21 pm (UTC)

Dat gif is killing me as both a Michael Jackson & Harry Potter fan. XDDDD

Ah..tbh it's best if she doesn't anyway, seeing as how her last book didn't do well. :/

No biggie. I've read gazillions of fanfic on the Marauders in my teens and many of them were a lot more decent than what JK would come up with anyways. Wish she'd do a prequel on like Merlin or something from way back Potter history, but eh that.

As long as it's not more stuff like Casual Vacancy. I hated that book so much. Anything more in the HP universe would be amazing and I would read immediately.
