JKR: A 'Harry Potter' Prequel About the Marauders Will Never Happen

Harry Potter and The Casual Vacancy author J.K. Rowling spoke this evening at the Bath Literature Festival and made clear that if she ever returns to Harry Potter, she won’t write a prequel.

Rowling was asked about if she would return to the Harry Potter series like so many fans have hoped since 2007 to write about, as an example, the Marauders. She responded by saying that although she has no current plans to return to the series, if she did it would not be about the Marauders. The reason? She doesn’t find prequels to be any good. This would mean no stories about James, Lily, Sirius, Pettigrew, etc.

Elsewhere during the evening she said…
- Grindelwald never loved Dumbledore and used him.
- Her own first kiss came when she was 12 years old.
- Her next book will be aimed at 8-year-olds, but she’s still busy writing it.
- Her proudest moment was when she outed Dumbledore (as gay), and following the revelation in New York City a fan came up to her straight afterwords and revealed that he or she too is homosexual.

Hypable co-founder Richard Reid attended tonight’s event and reported back on the comments Rowling made. This is the author’s only planned public engagement in 2013.
The news of no Maurader prequels may come as a disappointment to fans who had hoped or thought that would be the perfect part of the Potter world to head into with a new book. Fans could also see her writing about Harry, Ron, and Hermione’s children – and luckily she hasn’t ruled that idea out (yet). Regardless, it’s nice to hear her still considering the idea of returning to the Wizarding World.

This is breaking my heart rn. </3  I never really thought she would, but I hate having it confirmed. What does she mean it wouldn't be "any good." I would read 500 pages of Sirius throwing spit balls at Snape, tbh...

Marauder's era, couple = Lily and James, but has all the marauders and some incredible OCs.

It's called The Life and Times. http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5200789/1/The-Life-and-Times

It's incredibly long, but amazing. The author takes forever to update, but currently it's at 500k+ words, so there's a lot of catching up.

For some reason my computer won't load the damn page, but this links to it http://coffee-and-chocolate.com/2008/01/11/thirteen-steps-to-the-end-of-the-world/

Its a one shot, but it completely breaks my heart, and really tells the whole marauder story

I remember this being a good Regulus-centric fic about the Black family and all their screwed-up-ness (lol): http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2027077/1/Mummy-s-Favorite

go to the Sugar Quill and search for anything by Elsha

(start with Distractions, then move on to Discussions, Discoveries, Distinctions, Disadvantages and Disavowals - they star Theodore Nott and a female OC Hufflepuff who is for once not a Mary Sue)

Because Pottermore is a success right?

JK, do us all a solid and just write it please. Or give us a small script so we can pitch it to the BBC and get a mini series. The movies royally fucked The Marauders. They deserve better.
snggdsyreus 9th-Mar-2013 09:28 am (UTC)
Words can't describe how much I want a mini series done well. The films are just a huge disappointment imo.
deviousweasel 9th-Mar-2013 06:41 am (UTC)
all I ever wanted was a Marauders book and I knew it would never happen but somewhere deep in my heart there was a little flame of hope and now that's been brutally murdered

I'm a huge potter fan but like idaf about a Marauder's prequel. People just want details to feed their snape/sirius slash fics.
hisjulliet 9th-Mar-2013 07:38 am (UTC)
snape/sirius slash

that really exists? seriously, HOW
ari_hime 9th-Mar-2013 07:47 am (UTC)
every HP ship possible exists. snape/sorting hat exists.

nhf your hate
goldynchickie 9th-Mar-2013 11:14 am (UTC)
Haha, obviously you haven't been reading HP fiction for the past 12 years. That's definitely one of the less shocking pairings. Snape is pretty much paired with all the marauder's except Wormtail, of course.
loverelapse 9th-Mar-2013 09:01 am (UTC)
lol like the only marauder era slash ship i support
sweetcherrytree 9th-Mar-2013 06:46 am (UTC)
i didn't even entertain this as a possibility but oh well

mwpp era ftw

h0tfuss 9th-Mar-2013 07:04 am (UTC)
I know what she means. The ending of a prequel can never be a surprise. Plus you have to regress characters even further backward than they were whenever they were first introduced.
winegums 9th-Mar-2013 04:10 pm (UTC)

ik JKR >>>>>>>> George Lucas, but after the shittiness of the SW prequals I never want any prequels for anything I love, ever. Especially if it involves characters in the present-day story.
randomneses 9th-Mar-2013 07:05 am (UTC)
I just want to know more about Lily tho D:
shitzkrieg 9th-Mar-2013 07:13 am (UTC)
I would have sold my soul for this 2 years ago but idk, at this point I have such an elaborate headcanon that I'm kind of glad it's not going to happen. The ~mystery~ of that generation/the first war is part of what makes it fun to think about. Part of me is still curious to hear what she had in mind for all the characters/their backstories, but I guess Floppermore will have to suffice

dizzy879 9th-Mar-2013 07:14 am (UTC)
I would love another HP related novel, but it won't happen. I still haven't read her last novel. I will this summer.
ari_hime 9th-Mar-2013 07:17 am (UTC)
i kinda agree with her that a marauders book wouldn't be good. we know too much about them and what ends up happening to them for it to be that thrilling. same with a story about voldemort's rise to power. we know how he is defeated so it would kind of take away from it.

if she DID do a prequel though, i would definitely want one about the founders. we really don't know much about them besides founding hogwarts and the falling out with slytherin. i've always been interested to see the actual characterization of the founders and how that translates into the houses.

as for sequels, i'd want it to be something like hermione, harry, and ron as grown ups and they have to uncover some mystery related to the department of mysteries. mostly because the department of mysteries chapter of ootp is my favorite of the entire series. and because i wouldn't really care about a book starring their kids.

Her proudest moment was when she outed Dumbledore (as gay)...

And that's still probably my most favorite ONTD post ever. Such a great night.
