After Earth Trailer 2...happens

If you were wondering just how hard sci-fi the new Will Smith action flick After Earth will be, wonder no more.

The new trailer is here, and it looks to be a sci-fi FX spectacle with everything from an epic spaceship crash to some cool set pieces to alien creatures and big tech MacGuffins.

In addition to a ton of action, the latest trailer also sets up the story of the Will and Jaden Smith flick. The father-son duo crash-land on Earth 1,000 years after humanity has abandoned the planet to the wild, and have to fight for survival in search of the ship’s lost beacon. It looks like a nice, personal story packed in a big-budget package.

Much like the upcoming Tom Cruise tentpole Oblivion, it could be a unique sci-fi tale that should make for a great 2013. If they manage to pull it off, it could be stellar.

Check out the trailer below and let us know what you think:

Here is my prediction: Will Smith's Character dies in the plane crash and his "spirit" guides his son to become the man he should be and also heal their relationship. He'll live and learn a valuable lesson and learn in the end that his father was always dead.

I feel obligated to comment in every after earth post with the story about how at SDCC they announced for the ~very first time~ that m night was the director and the room erupted into a chorus of BOOOOOOOs and everyone on the panel looked shocked/horrified

i might have felt sorry for shyamalan if he weren't such a prick.

reminds me of when people would guffaw during the Devil trailer when shyamalan's name came up on screen.

i'm cringing at your recap. oh god.

fortunately shyamalan IS a total dickweed (have you ever read the man who heard voices?) so i don't have much sympathy.

people in the biz view the biz very differently than those out of it. by his peers, m night is seen as a well-respected director of a large number of films that grossed successfully or w/e

by the common person, he's seen has an overrated hack who has ruined some potentially awesome concepts

LMAO. I swear, whenever I see a movie and there's a trailer for one of his movies or any movie he's involved with and his name comes on screen, everyone groans and laughs. Everyone.
