Tomb Raider’s Film Reboot Will Mirror the New Game, Studio Says

Tomb Raider's reboot as a video game seems to have worked out well, so Crystal Dynamics is comfortable talking about their reboot plans for the film, too.

Speaking to Variety, Darrell Gallagher said his studio is working with GK Films, producers of "Rango" and "The Departed." Gallagher's remarks stress that whatever the next Tomb Raider film is, it'll be consistent with the tone of the game releasing today. "We didn't want to see a film version that was a continuation of the old ‘Tomb Raider' films," he said. "They are working from this new take that we've given them."

A rebooted "Tomb Raider" movie, departing from the voluptuous Angelina Jolie portrayal of Lara Croft to a steelier, yet vulnerable adventurer, has been talked about before. ComingSoon.net discussed the project with Graham King (he runs GK Films) back in 2011.

Hopefully Jolie gives her blessing lol. Maybe they'll have her make a cameo!

They said the same exact thing about comic book movies.
moob 5th-Mar-2013 06:21 pm (UTC)
comic books =/= video games
punishermax 5th-Mar-2013 06:30 pm (UTC)
Both were considered 'geek' hobbies and the films were created had the exact same problems, action oriented, shitty, etc. I mean are you also implying video games are inherently lesser of an art form? Because I could show you some really fucking bad comics.
moob 5th-Mar-2013 06:36 pm (UTC)
No, I'm saying films based on video games suck. Comic books and video games aren't the same platform, they're incredibly fucking different. Want to know what else generally sucks, other than video game movies? Video games based on comic books. Which actually changed with the release of Batman: Arkham Asylum.

I'm not even saying this ~cross-platform~ shit should stop, they need to put some goddamn effort into it and make these things good instead of just trying to harvest as much money as they can from dumb fans.
punishermax 5th-Mar-2013 06:39 pm (UTC)
And how do you know that this film won't do that? They've been provided with a fucking amazing template and the film could work if they follow it. Again, video games have not had their Blade yet, we havent crossed over and had a good video game movie that mad emoney and opened the floodgates. You say they're different but I really disagree, perhaps the art forms are veyr different and how they work are different but from a cross playform game to movie comic to movie thing they are very similar.

Because good games =/= good movies, this has been proven before. Maybe this one will change it, but I highly doubt it.
punishermax 5th-Mar-2013 06:45 pm (UTC)
But my original point WAS that this could change it and that comic books, before Blade and the Renaissance were thought of and have very much the same issues as video games movie of today, with Captain America, The Punisher, and so on in the early 80's till the 90's.

also i do believe marvel/etc. put some kind of effort into movies, instead of relying on existing fanbases to make a profit
punishermax 5th-Mar-2013 06:32 pm (UTC)
Nowadays they do, but if we look into the dark ages, the Pre Blade era and sometimes after you can see the movies were pretty garbage with very few exceptions (Batman, Batman Returns). My argument is that we have not reached the Blade movie.

That's a tired argument that basically only takes into account the flops. There have been plenty of good video game based movies (most of which were not like blockbuster games, but even a few of those were decent enough)

"That's a tired argument that basically only takes into account the flops."

You probably should read this section only, since it's the only relevant one to this conversation

All internationally released video game movies have sucked (yup, there's been "decent" ones, but never any truly "good" ones), with the only real profit going into the RE film series and the two previous Tomb Raider fillms. And those weren't great.
Yup fans of the games go see the movies, hence why some actually have the tiniest bit of profit, but are they "good" films? Not really, since like, you know, they all get shitted on for being a bit crap.

Good games =/= good films.
