The Power of the BANGS.
‘People really teased me': Zooey Deschanel opens up about her childhood struggles as she reveals mission to become a role model

She may now have a successful career partly due to her loveable quirkiness. But it seems it hasn’t always been so easy for Zooey Deschanel to fit in and be accepted. Speaking to Cosmopolitan magazine the New Girl actress opened up about being teased as a child and why she now wants to inspire young women. Remembering the hell she often experienced when she was younger, she revealed: ‘People really teased me. It was really bad.
‘Nothing could be as hard as middle school. There were insecurities that I think I would have worked through a lot faster if I’d had certain tools and could have connected with certain people earlier.’ Her own struggles are what have inspired the pretty brunette to become a role model herself.
‘We [Molly McAleer, Sophia Rossi and Zooey] started Hello Giggles [hellogiggles.com] for fun, but now I feel like I’m on a mission to make it a thing that helps other women,’ the 33-year-old said. ‘If there had been a place like that for me when I was 13, I would have felt so much less alone.’ Speaking more about her website, she’s admitted that she’s hugely passionate about protecting other girls from negativity: ‘I was so tired of every site having these comment sections that were pure, pure toxic energy.
‘I put myself out there; it’s part of my job, and I get it: people will attack me. At first I was thrown off, but now I have a pretty thick skin about it. But if someone were to do that to one of our 13-year-old bloggers, I would kill them!’ As well as talking about her pet project the star, who has recently launched her own production company to add to her impressive acting and singing career, shed some light on recording songs. ‘When we’re recording [with She & Him bandmate, Matthew Ward], we’ll almost always like the first or second take. I’d rather have something that’s imperfect but emotionally true than try to sing it perfectly,’ Zooey mused.
In between her busy career, Zooey is still open to romance and still believes in true love despite her divorce from Ben Gibbard being finalised at the end of last year. She confessed: ‘[True love] that lasts forever… yes, I do believe in it. My parents have been married for 40 years and my grandparents were married for 70 years. I come from a long line of true loves.’ And talking about her ideal guy, she revealed: ‘I’d be more likely to go for somebody who is like me. Well, I like creative people, so whatever that means… Yeah, authentic and creative.’ The full interview appears in the April issue of British Cosmopolitan, on sale 5th March.

Zooey wrote some stuff when the site was first launched, I don't think she has since.
There are young contributers (like she says here, some 13 year olds) but their articles are kind of... nothing tbh. Just 'in defense of taylor swift' and 'reasons why i'm not a duggar' and 'i am 11 and will never pay 30 dollars for a makeup brush' type stuff. All filled with comments from adults about how much more mature those girls are than other girls their age. I don't think they really look into the kids they get to write either, because one of them had some pretty ignorant and racist stuff on her tumblr.
It's a pretty bland/inoffensive website, but when it first started there were A LOT of really bad articles about how woman lack self respect when the wear short dresses, makeup to the gym, pajamas in public and a bunch of other garbage.
