Holly Madison Plans to Eat Her Own Placenta, January Jones Calls Such Consumption "Very Civilized"

She may still be with child, but Holly Madison is already having a post-pregnancy craving.

"This might sound gross, but I'm totally plannng on having my placenta turned into pills I can take after giving birth," the former Playboy model and Girls Next Door star wrote Wednesday on her blog. "I heard it helps women recover faster and I want to recover as quickly as I can!"

Hugh Hefner's ex added, "Have any other moms out there done this?"

Well, as a matter of fact, Holly, some have. In particular, January Jones, who revealed back in March 2012 that she had opted to consume her placenta after welcoming son Xander.

And in the latest issue of Britain's Glamour, the Mad Men actress talks about how it simply worked wonders.

"It's a very civilized thing that can help women with depression or fatigue," Jones told the magazine. "I was never depressed or sad or down after the baby was born, so I'd highly suggest it to any pregnant woman."

where did placenta eating come from and is there any actual evidence that it helps at all? i mean, i'd do it if there was an actual tangible benefit to doing so (it would have to be a pretty hefty benefit as well) and if i could take it like a wheatgrass shot...

Most is ancedotal stories from women who had one child and had pretty bad depression and then with the next child consumed the placenta and felt much better afterwards. Im on my phone so going into details is hard. Mothering.com is a good resource to look into. Some women do eat it in a smootgie and you cant even taste anything. I knowthey use. Small chunks in the smoothies not big ol chunks. I believe there is evidence to suggest thst throughout most human history humans consumed their placentas, i have no links to share it was something i read a few years ago during my first pregnancy.

Well most other mammals eat their placentas, but it's also because it's a source of easy energy and raising offspring is already an energy-intensive process. So eating the placenta is "natural," except that people live in a totally unnatural world. There's no evidence that it has real benefits but there is probably a placebo effect for people who believe in it.

ooh so i could possibly just eat a steak instead and think to myself it's my placenta and possibly get the same effect?
ediesedgwick 28th-Feb-2013 05:08 pm (UTC)
lol basically, if u rly believe it
jackiemust_die 28th-Feb-2013 05:12 pm (UTC)
i don't, but i'll tell people this so they'll bring me steak after i have my bb

this always cracks me up for some reason, when people are like "Noooo way placenta, fuck yeah steak!" Like, they can see eating an animal that has been touched by 50 people and eaten god knows what throughout its life but something fresh out of their own body is totally weird. haha
elvenqueen86 28th-Feb-2013 07:09 pm (UTC)
Well if you think about it, eating meat from other sources is totally normal. Most people live their whole lives eating it, so it's not weird. But how often do we eat something off our own bodies? I'm sure a lot of kids probably did the "pick and eat" style of booger removal, and were obviously told "NO, BAD!" so, they're not going to have positive feelings/thoughts about eating something that comes from themselves. I can totally understand why people would be grossed out by one thing, but not the other.

I think most of the reason that animals eat their placentas though is to not leave around any nice smelling stuff to attract predators. The whole vitamins and crap just happens to be a pleasant extra side effect?

Who knows. Whatever rocks your house, I guess. I dont really see how it could hurt.
ediesedgwick 28th-Feb-2013 06:48 pm (UTC)
Yeah, I think that's part of it too. There's def more than one reason why it's an evolutionary advantage for other mammals.

I learned last year that scientists still don't really get why animals eat the placenta. I was like, "uhhhhh.... what?"

I think its more about the hormones and stuff that are in the placenta. It, or so I've read/heard, makes it easier for your body after you have a baby and are going through a hormonal free-for-all.
nanewt011 28th-Feb-2013 05:05 pm (UTC)
it is chock full of hormones, but I'm not aware of any actual consensus among medical professionals either way, hasn't been shown to be harmful, so I say go for it, as long as mom doesn't have any blood-born diseases like Hepatitis or HIV
it's not likely the virus would survive the processing of the placenta for eating, but if the virus does survive it would probably be mutated, don't need that back in your system

Many cultures have been eating placentas for years, it's only been popular in the US since the 70s. Some people make tea with it, some people cook it, some people get it dried and made into pills.

One of my friends had pills made from her 2nd kid and she felt that it helped with milk production and gave her more energy.
