The CW moves Cult to Fridays

Just two episodes into its first season, The CW's mysterious new psychological drama Cult is moving to a new night. Beginning March 8, Cult's time slot will move from Tuesdays after heartwarming small-town medical drama Hart of Dixie to Friday nights following spy thriller Nikita.

The dark, moody Cult follows investigative journalist Jeff Sefton (The Vampire Diaries' Matt Davis) as he searches for his missing brother and in turn uncovers the dark underworld of the TV show (within the show) Cult, with which his brother was obsessed. The series also stars Jessica Lucas as Skye Yarrow, the intrepid Cult research assistant who helps Jeff with his investigation, Alona Tal as the show-within-the-show's cop (and the actress who plays her), and Robert Knepper as the show-within-the-show's dastardly cult leader Billy Grimm (and the actor who playis him).

While one could view the move as a death sentence for a show struggling to get ratings — Friday night moves usually means a cancelation is not too far in the future — in actuality, this is a smart move on The CW's part. When it aired on Tuesday nights, Cult's lead-in was the could-not-be-more-opposite Hart of Dixie. Cult is a dark, edgy thriller, while Hart of Dixie is a fun, light (although sometimes heartbreaking) Southern charmer. The pairing of the two shows never quite made sense.

Now, with Cult's move to Friday nights, it will follow the equally dark drama Nikita, the show about a secret government organization of assassins. The vibe and subject matter are much more in Cult's wheelhouse than life in Bluebell, Alabama. Perhaps this move will actually end up garnering a ratings increase for Cult.

Encore episodes of CW series will take over the Tuesday 9 PM ET/PT timeslot, beginning with Beauty and the Beast on March 5.

Glad I didn't start watching this
crazyventures 28th-Feb-2013 03:37 pm (UTC)
Canceled in a few episodes but why they thought it was a good fit with Hart of Dixie is beyond me
rainbowren 28th-Feb-2013 03:40 pm (UTC)
Well, goodbye Cult!

LOL I had this stupid show on as background noise when it premiered and all I got from it was that the main dude works at THE WASHINGTON POST (seriously, why did they keep mentioning it over and over again? A last desperate stab at promotion for print media?) and THESE THINGS JUST SNAP RIGHT OFF, which is the least intriguing catch phrase I've ever heard.
violue 28th-Feb-2013 05:35 pm (UTC)
I hope we get an explanation for that weird-ass line before the show dies.

uh oh.
honeebs 28th-Feb-2013 03:46 pm (UTC)
That's the end of that.
I started it, could be good but the case is really horrid.
imnotasquirrel 28th-Feb-2013 03:49 pm (UTC)
I was gonna say that this means that the CW hates Cult already, but... I mean... Nikita's there too. And as much as I give the CW grief for screwing up with Nikita's marketing and promo, I'm pretty sure the CW president's personal love for the show has played a part in its continued survival. So idk.
advo 28th-Feb-2013 04:23 pm (UTC)
I don't think CW hates Cult. They are just being realistic regarding the ratings. And no matter how much Mark Pedowitz loves Nikita, they wouldn't renew it if it wasn't because it's relatively stable in the Friday slot and they want it to make syndication. Moving Cult to Friday already is just to burn off the episodes - it's definitely a death sentence. So... when can we expect Matt Davis back on TVD?
cassie_epstein 28th-Feb-2013 06:11 pm (UTC)
Hopefully not
crazyventures 28th-Feb-2013 07:14 pm (UTC)
Klaus was the scariest when Matt Davis was playing Klaus-in-Alaric's-body

RIP TVD seasons 1-2

It probably also helped that he hadn't yet wept, drawn horses or confessed his jealousy of hummingbirds lbr.

I cringed just reading that tbh.

He had such potential

This. They are barely using him on the show and it pisses me off.
demi32 28th-Feb-2013 04:11 pm (UTC)
I've been watching it, but still trying to figure it out.

I'm torn because Nikita's survived on Fridays and I'm scared if they change the night is airs and the ratings aren't good enough then it'll just be cancelled. Fridays = lower expectations and it doesn't have a devoted fanbase like SPN that will follow it anywhere. Idk idk.
nazliy 28th-Feb-2013 04:41 pm (UTC)
oh perfect... you cancelled your perfect tuesday show, emily owens for this
hollymarchosias 28th-Feb-2013 04:43 pm (UTC)
Cult was always slated for midseason even if Emily Owens wasn't canceled.
nazliy 28th-Feb-2013 05:08 pm (UTC)
I know that but i'm just pissed lol. They could have found another day for this flop
yourlivewire 28th-Feb-2013 05:03 pm (UTC)
well, that's not a good sign
prophecypro 28th-Feb-2013 05:36 pm (UTC)
CW as a network has problems. How does it not fold up in 2 years?
violue 28th-Feb-2013 05:38 pm (UTC)
well, it does make sense i guess, pairing it with something like Nikita. closer to the same target audience perhaps
myrasis 28th-Feb-2013 05:38 pm (UTC)
i haven't even started watching it but NO LET ROCKNE HAVE A SHOW DAMMIT
weighty_ghost 28th-Feb-2013 06:05 pm (UTC)

You know what was a good fit with HoD? Emily Owens. So good job.
procedurals 28th-Feb-2013 06:09 pm (UTC)
ehhh this is on my dvr but i guess i'll delete it

i do dig robert knepper as a creepy bad guy but i'm sure he'll get another shot at it somewhere
amber_protocol 1st-Mar-2013 12:07 am (UTC)
Just go watch re-runs of Prison Break, I'm sure he was better on that than this dreck.
rawins418 28th-Feb-2013 06:13 pm (UTC)
Whenever the CW airs a new show I always wait until it airs the first 5 episodes to start viewing it. This is the perfect reason why and at only 2 episodes in. I always hate getting invested when it could be given a death sentence 3 - 5 episodes in. Deleted.

Speaking of which, I finally started watching Carrie Diaries and I oddly love it.
amber_protocol 1st-Mar-2013 12:09 am (UTC)
Although if it's so terrible it's getting cancelled in under 5 episodes then you probably won't care if it does.
ljubavirakija 28th-Feb-2013 06:18 pm (UTC)
This show is so awful. All of the leads deserve so much better
nicenicegirl 28th-Feb-2013 06:26 pm (UTC)
the show within the show kills me. idk everyone seems to love Knepper but i can't stand him i always feel like he tries entirely too hard to be ~mysterious~ or something.

i still haven't really been hooked yet. but it sometimes takes a few episodes i guess.

I feel like spring/mid-season shows are a terrible time to start up new shows. CW is down across the board this time of year, so introducing new shows at the same time is just...fail.
snark_ranger 28th-Feb-2013 08:05 pm (UTC)
I couldn't even make it through the first episode. And I love Alona Tal and one of my favorite Canadian child stars Stacey Farber. Matt Davis comes off so annoying, I had to give up.
sunktheglow 28th-Feb-2013 08:57 pm (UTC)
I feel like I'd like this show more if the cast minus Robert Knepper didn't suck.
kiddo84 28th-Feb-2013 09:15 pm (UTC)
This doesn't sound promising.
josh_the_k 28th-Feb-2013 10:26 pm (UTC)
I didn't know CW even programmed anything on Fridays.
sastra_fuss 1st-Mar-2013 02:29 am (UTC)
this show is terrible. just kill it already.
ellie looked different in episode 2
