Taraji P. Henson Becomes An Angel For New PETA Campaign Against Chaining Dogs

"Person of Interest" Star Says Dogs Belong Indoors With Their Families, Not Chained Outside

February 27, 2013 - New York -- As winter's cold temperatures continue across the U.S., award-winning actor Taraji P. Henson is heating things up with a steamy new PETA campaign, in which she appears dressed in a short gossamer gown and a pair of synthetic, cruelty-free wings next to the words "Be an Angel for Animals." The ad, which was shot by top celebrity photographer Don Flood, goes on to stress that "chained dogs suffer day in and day out. They are cold, hungry, thirsty, vulnerable, and lonely. Keep them inside, where it's safe and warm." A high-resolution version is available here.

As part of the winter campaign, Henson also appeared in a video that encourages people to sponsor PETA doghouses for dogs in southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina—where some dogs have no shelter at all—and sat down for an exclusive interview, in which she opened up about her costar in the campaign, her beloved dog, Uncle Willie. "I never thought that I could be so in love with an animal until I had Willie," she says. "He's our family. … He's just the best companion. Dogs to me are like children … they're the closest thing to God. They're so pure in their love, and all they do is aim to please." Henson also discusses her rewarding experiences volunteering at animal shelters with her son.

I'm glad she's not naked.
deseti_prsten 27th-Feb-2013 11:58 pm (UTC)
It makes me sad when celebs I like join PETA. It just shows they're ignorant in that way. Go help other, good organizations.
agatharuncible 28th-Feb-2013 03:32 am (UTC)
it makes me sad too, because if most of these celebrities got together they could probably support other groups. if they didn't even want to bother looking up different groups for different causes, the amount of attention could make a PETA-like thing happen very quickly.

tbh I think it's because PETA is the most famous so it's the one most people find, and they probably don't go around Googling PETA's controversies. :/

yay the site works again

lol the screencap looks better than the actual pic
ides_of_smarch 28th-Feb-2013 12:06 am (UTC)
should've posed with a pitbull, those are the most likely chained breed. then again, it's peta we're talking about...why all these people endorse them baffles me.
iotajot 28th-Feb-2013 12:08 am (UTC)
THIS!
courtkneee1 28th-Feb-2013 12:13 am (UTC)
well not everyone spends their time researching why peta might be doing questionable things esp when it's so well known. If a celebrity wanted to do an animal campaign the logical thing would be to go with peta and really the only people who'd question that are random people on the internet.
anchors_oceans 28th-Feb-2013 12:14 am (UTC)
i hate when dogs get bad raps. everyone in my family has had pitbulls, rottweilers, german sheps, english and bull mastiffs. sweetest puppies. wanted nothing more than a good kong, treats, snuggles, and a nap. any breed can be "rough" if not cared for properly.
feelgooderies 28th-Feb-2013 12:16 am (UTC)
Seriously. Little dogs (especially high maintenance frou-frou dogs) are almost always kept indoors.
aria_grace 28th-Feb-2013 12:29 am (UTC)
Not necessarily true in the South. Coonhounds, Fox hounds, beagles and Bassets- any dog used commonly for hunting- are routinely left chained up. Unfortunately. :(

but I agree she posed with the wrong kind of dog! It would be pretty rare for a little terrier-type like that to be left chained up.
simplylovable 28th-Feb-2013 01:13 am (UTC)
bc its her dog
wowsolovely 28th-Feb-2013 07:06 am (UTC)
peta hates pitties :(
and well all dogs but pits the most.
flor_verde 28th-Feb-2013 12:07 am (UTC)
I found out not too long ago that my landlords were keeping two dogs in kennels in their unheated/uninsulated barn. They said that they're hunting dogs, and I'm pretty sure they never let them out of the barn unless they're going hunting.

This is the main reason why I'm moving in a week. I can't give people like that money.

aria_grace 28th-Feb-2013 12:30 am (UTC)
Good for you bb. I hate hearing about the treatment of hunting dogs.
agatharuncible 28th-Feb-2013 03:33 am (UTC)
you should let them know the reason tbh, maybe that'll make them think about what they're doing.
silentsymphonie 28th-Feb-2013 03:41 am (UTC)
call animal control
milly 28th-Feb-2013 06:29 am (UTC)
I second this. Especially if OP is leaving, so it's not like they could get in a bad situation with the landlords.
wowsolovely 28th-Feb-2013 07:06 am (UTC)
steal them before you move!
sucha_handful 28th-Feb-2013 12:08 am (UTC)
i wonder how many birds it took to make them wings
lori22 28th-Feb-2013 12:10 am (UTC)
a pair of synthetic, cruelty-free wings
yourscenesucks 28th-Feb-2013 12:15 am (UTC)
They look like like they're made of tulle.
courtkneee1 28th-Feb-2013 12:09 am (UTC)
i hate when people say "dogs love being outside, they belong outdoors" to justify leaving them there. I can already see that my dog runs outside when I let him out in the morning but ALWAYS wants to come back in. especially if we're all doing something inside.

I just find it so cruel seeing a dog outside esp in bad weather :(
agatharuncible 28th-Feb-2013 03:34 am (UTC)
same tbh :(
anus 28th-Feb-2013 12:11 am (UTC)
My beagle is a rescue and I think the previous owners probably left him outside no matter what the weather. He is TERRIFIED if it's even raining and is scared as hell if there's thunder.
bienenkiste 28th-Feb-2013 12:19 am (UTC)
omg poor thing :/
aria_grace 28th-Feb-2013 12:32 am (UTC)
My dog is a rescue too. He was found as a stray in the woods. :( Apparently, that's what some hunters do to hunting dog as puppies to 'test' their skills or some shit: they take them out in the woods and leave them. The puppies that come back get to stay and be hunting dogs. The rest are just.... left in the woods.

UHG. Pretty sure that is what happened to my lil guy.
howlcosmiclove 28th-Feb-2013 01:15 am (UTC)
aw :(
lone_concertina 28th-Feb-2013 03:06 am (UTC)
Have you tried a Thunder Shirt? We had a foster who was terrified of storms and loud noises, so we put the shirt on her when it got loud and she became a completely different dog. My shepherd wears one all the time too because she was locked in a cage in a puppy mill for a year and has really bad anxiety now. It's a really amazing thing and most pet stores (Petsmart and Petco for sure) will let you return it if your dog doesn't respond well.
agatharuncible 28th-Feb-2013 03:34 am (UTC)
omg what is a thunder shirt? I think I need this wonder for my dog.
20727 28th-Feb-2013 12:12 am (UTC)
OT but i wish we'd have huge fines for people who don't walk their dogs on a leash. i don't understand how hard it is to understand that though you trust your hugeass dog not to bite anyone, random people on the street don't necessarily share your confidence.
agatharuncible 28th-Feb-2013 03:35 am (UTC)
yes! I don't mind it so much when it's a tiny chihuahua or something, even though they can be annoying if you're trying to walk and they keep getting in your way. I'm not afraid of big dogs, but you never know if they're friendly at all and it's terrible when I'm trying to walk MY dogs.
shortliljackers 28th-Feb-2013 04:24 am (UTC)
my dog has leash reactivity, so i'm always afraid of running into a dog that is off leash. like okay, your dog is really friendly, but my dog is not very trusting of new dogs, so please keep your dog leashed so a fight doesn't happen.

he has come across another dog that was off leash, and they were fine, but still, i don't want to risk anyone getting hurt.
wowsolovely 28th-Feb-2013 07:09 am (UTC)
even if the dogs don't bite I just hate when I see a dog walking 30 feet away from a person and I can't tell if its a stray of with that person. Ugh your dog could get hit by a car or lost.
bloodless_igby 28th-Feb-2013 12:14 am (UTC)
All dogs are inside dogs. If you're not going to keep a dog inside where the temperature is controlled and it's with its family, don't have a dog.
vanesa3000 28th-Feb-2013 12:46 am (UTC)
ikr i agree my dog lives with my family but it's a small one.

i think no matter the size dogs should have company and walks...

heart_iswild 28th-Feb-2013 01:32 am (UTC)
EXACTLY. it makes me sick that people think doing the bare minimum to keep the dog alive is acceptable. like what kind of cold son of a bitch are you, that you can watch your animal sit outside alone?
bloodless_igby 28th-Feb-2013 02:17 am (UTC)
People are ridiculous. And it's always the size argument that gets me. Dogs should be able to go outside and get the exercise they need no matter the size, but come inside and be with their people and sleep and be fed and snuggled and all that. My dog is 80 pounds and sleeps on my bed with me. She's a rescue and can't stand to be outside alone which makes me think she was left out there by herself for long amounts of time and is super afraid of me just shutting the door and never opening it again and it makes me want to weep at the thought of it.
aflaminghalo 28th-Feb-2013 12:14 am (UTC)
They're so pure in their love, and all they do is aim to please.

Ha. The only thing my dog loves is food and the only thing she aims to do is get more food.
shiningautumn 28th-Feb-2013 12:15 am (UTC)
finally a peta initiative i can fully support...doesn't hurt that taraji looks fucking amazing in that ad <3

Does anyone know how to get a free premium rapidgator account?
hahahey 28th-Feb-2013 12:25 am (UTC)
why can't celebs just look for organizations other than PETA, I know it's big but can't they throw their support elsewhere.

i love taraji though
yourscenesucks 28th-Feb-2013 12:37 am (UTC)
Other animal welfare groups don't offer such varied advertising, whereas PETA throws a whole fuckton of their proceeds into it. Take Sarah MacLachlan and that same heartbreaking commercial we've all been crying about for...a pretty long time. Many different celebs get to look beautiful and sexy, but talk about animals and, in their minds, contribute to a discussion and raise awareness. I'm not saying it's right, but I can see why they do it.
milly 28th-Feb-2013 06:44 am (UTC)
Did you mean that the Sarah McLachlan commercial was for PETA? Because it wasn't (It's the ASPCA).

Unless your point was that other groups like the ASPCA don't have as much of a varied advertising, hence the same commercial playing forever?
