I think she didn't realize how shiny the fabric was and how insanely the lights would catch in the seams of her dress.

She probably just liked the pale pink color and thought it would go well with her coloring (it's a hard shade to wear if you have fair skin...you have to have dark hair and the right kind of eyebrows to look good in it). My mom loved the dress though. There's a demographic of people who are sick of seeing strapless dresses and the push toward minimalism-chic. Anne wore a dress that didn't seem like it would slip down, and she wore a big old necklace. It's the sort of tacky-ass outfit you put together if you grew up around adults who were into theatre.
