Early Ratings: Oscars are Up from Last Year

Early indications are that Sunday's telecast of the Oscars on ABC was a strong ratings performer, with the overnight score up 4% from last year to a six-year high.

The Academy Awards averaged a 26.6 household rating/41 share in Nielsen's metered markets from 8:30 p.m. to midnight ET -- the best for the show since 2007 (27.7/42). Hosted by Seth MacFarlane, the Oscars surged above both 2012 (25.5/37) and 2011 (24.6/37) and was just a bit better than 2010 (26.5/40).

It also appears that ratings in the key 18-49 demographic are up over last year, though it won't be clear until later this morning when Nielsen issues time zone-adjusted preliminary nationals.

i really wanted joaquin to win just to hear his speech even though i know he doesn't give a fuck. i'm just still pissed that he didn't win for walk the line. ugh.
hotfuzz85 25th-Feb-2013 03:56 pm (UTC)
I wished I had bet money on guessing the winners. 18/22.

Sigh.
jainasky 25th-Feb-2013 03:56 pm (UTC)
Loved Shirley singing but was so disappointed that the James bond actors didn't reunite.
satellite__eyes 25th-Feb-2013 04:04 pm (UTC)
Tbh I wouldn't come if I were them anyway. The Oscars have shafted that franchise for decades and now they're trying to cash in on it.
nullteiler 25th-Feb-2013 04:35 pm (UTC)
right? that shitty song?
They are so many better Bond songs out there.. it's so mediocore but Adele is still blessed with the hype around 21
jainasky 25th-Feb-2013 05:54 pm (UTC)
I read on the newssites that it was actually a rumor that had grown over time. My guess is they approached them and Sean said no. I think Pierce, Daniel and Tim Dalton would have done it. I guess Roger would have, but from what I understand about Sean he hates James Bond.

That said, I am glad they didn't really. That show was a hot mess and it is better they weren't there. Still disappointed though, I'd love to have seen them all there. And Timothy Dalton was my favorite Bond so any chance to see him is a good thing.

I just...can't believe Anne Hathaway won an Oscar.
milkchokolate 25th-Feb-2013 04:02 pm (UTC)
Her speech was insufferable.

exempting the "it came true!" at the beginning, I didn't think it was toooo terrible
ilouboutin 25th-Feb-2013 04:23 pm (UTC)
it was so fucking rehearsed, i cringed. i just hope she fades into obscurity now.

I thought Seth was generally unfunny

I was actually surprised JLaw won, I really thought it might be Emmanuelle after the BAFTA's and was expecting tumblr to have a collective meltdown

Glad that Life of Pi got so much recognition. Such a good movie.

DDL is charming as ever but him winning was so boring and expected. I would have loved to see an upset in that category tbh, even though I saw Lincoln and he was obviously great in it (although admittedly, I didn't know what was going on half the time in that movie)
winegums 25th-Feb-2013 05:09 pm (UTC)
Emmanuelle never campaigned tho, and lbr the PR is what wins you Oscars and not so much the actual work. Lawrence and Chastain (the only serious contenders) were both going hard at it but after ZDT got tagged as the torture-condoning movie, it kind of fell to Jennifer by default. And I don't even mind tbh, she wasn't even a quarter as irritating as Natalie Portman in 2011.
karinette001 25th-Feb-2013 04:07 pm (UTC)
I face-palmed through most of Seth's jokes jfc that was a bad move, Academy, bad move.

Expected
kiki3291 25th-Feb-2013 04:17 pm (UTC)
The last Oscars I fully enjoyed was the one hosted by Hugh Jackman, and before then I can't even remember any others besides the ones hosted by John Stewart and Chris Rock.
nullteiler 25th-Feb-2013 04:38 pm (UTC)
Is actually everybody happy with Christoph winning?
holyfrijoles_2 25th-Feb-2013 04:40 pm (UTC)
I'm not. I thought his performance was just more of the same from Inglorious Basterds.
nullteiler 25th-Feb-2013 04:49 pm (UTC)
Same here. He was good in it and I love the movie but I don't thik him winning was deserved
la_petite_singe 25th-Feb-2013 05:07 pm (UTC)
Happy enough--definitely too similar/too soon after IB, but he was great and I didn't think any of the other performances were necessarily much more deserving. It just wasn't an extremely strong year in that category, though I would've maybe liked Irrfan Khan or Jason Clarke to be up.
oh7 25th-Feb-2013 05:13 pm (UTC)
I luved that Hollywood applauded the White savior character yet again.
78ml 25th-Feb-2013 05:37 pm (UTC)
Fuck yes
shadowfax 25th-Feb-2013 06:01 pm (UTC)
Jaimie Foxx should've been the one getting most of the recognition from Django
another_grl 25th-Feb-2013 06:03 pm (UTC)
no, Tommy Lee Jones should have won.
westamp 25th-Feb-2013 11:14 pm (UTC)
You know Robert DeNiro can't be happy. I read this was the year he got out and campaigned and what did he get out of it? A sore butt for sitting through that ceremony!
la_petite_singe 25th-Feb-2013 05:06 pm (UTC)
Wasn't thrilled with all the winners, but at least lots of different movies were praised (the big six went to six different movies!) and there were a few pleasant surprises. And overall I didn't mind Seth, though it's no surprise that everyone is butthurt. Lord.
oh7 25th-Feb-2013 05:12 pm (UTC)
The White club.
78ml 25th-Feb-2013 05:36 pm (UTC)
I swear, Cristoph and DDL are the defining actors of this generation. They're ridiculously talented and so great
shadowfax 25th-Feb-2013 05:47 pm (UTC)
Thoughts on last night?

DDL and his eloquent existence was the highlight of the night.

Also Adele was gorgeous.
