Totally. He should have won for GFII for the Fredo kiss of death scene alone. He just kills me in that movie and he was just a force of nature in Dog Day.
Marlon Brando was iconic in the Godfather and all, but I have to say, him winning Best Actor while Pacino was only nominated for Supporting has got to be one of the biggest and most unremarked up cases of category fraud of all time. Yeah, Brando gets the opening scene and a lot of the punchy lines, but I always thought it was really obvious that Michael was the leading role, you spend the most screen time with him and the entire movie is basically about his character's arc. Vito is at best a co-lead.
I think it was more a case of recognising Al who, at the time, was a unknown actor rather than really pushing for an Award. Besides, that way, they could put Marlon as the BO draw instead of some unknown actors; the movie rested on his shoulders, tbh.
I agree but it's pretty much the same case scenario that took place a few years ago with Haille Steinfeld. True Grit is her movie, she's a true lead, the other characters are only valuable to the story because her character exists yet they decided to honor her with a SA nomination.
Which I think is actually good in the long run because Hailee is young and, this way, she gets to learn and grow as an actress without the pressure of being too good too soon
