Jennifer Lawrence Falls on Steps as She Wins Best Actress Oscar

And just like that, Jennifer Lawrence is immortalized -- goofily! -- in Oscar history. The 22-year-old star won the Best Actress Academy Award inside the Dolby Theater in Hollywood on Feb. 24. Ascending the Oscars stage in a stunning pale Dior Haute Couture gown, Lawrence suffered every actress' nightmare: She face-planted! Tripping on her sizable frock, the blonde fell down on the steps, and was quickly helped up.

Getting a standing ovation from some in the crowd, Lawrence quickly acknowledged the pratfall. "You guys are just standing up because you feel bad that I fell -- it's really embarrassing. This is nuts!"

Accepting her Oscar from The Artist's Jean Dujardin, Lawrence then acknowledged her competition: Zero Dark Thirty's Jessica Chastain, The Impossible's Naomi Watts, Amour's Emmanuelle Riva, and Beasts of the Southern Wild's Quvenzhane Wallis. "You were so magnificent, and it's been so amazing getting to know you," Lawrence said, "You've made this experience unforgettable."

Thanking her family and other colleagues, she then wished a happy birthday to French actress Riva, whose 86th birthday fell on Oscar Sunday.

Riva should have won, but Jen was a good runner-up.

i think a lot of people discredit her performance because she's said a lot of assholish and moronic things. people hate her for being ignorant and offensive, which i understand. but let's not pretend her performance wasn't "oscar worthy" or that the role wasn't "challenging" when the part required her to do a fuckload more than, say, jess chastain in ZD30.

I love Jess but she was miscast. Riva had a quiet role and you don't see anyone making up excuses for her.

i love jess too and i thought she was good in ZD30, but not great. imo she deserved her nom but definitely did not deserve to win. for example the scene where she yells at kyle chandler that they keep using @ these award shows because it's her most baity scene, i find it easily her worst moment in the film. she just doesn't pull that scene off at all and i don't buy it for a second. she shines in the smaller moments like at the end of the film... which is why it's hysterical to see people praise her performance in ZD30 while in the same breath saying jlaw did nothing in SLP or that tiffany wasn't a "challenging" character. how can one dismiss a performance on the grounds of it not being 'big' enough to be oscar-worthy, while praising a performance even LESS 'big'?

Right? Jess is a great subtle actress. I have no idea why she was chosen for this even her voice sounds wrong for the role. I agree with you in that she deserved the nom but not the win.

The only weak point I could spot with Jen's performance is a window that's less than a minute during the scene where she confronts De Niro's character.
