Jennifer Lawrence Falls on Steps as She Wins Best Actress Oscar

And just like that, Jennifer Lawrence is immortalized -- goofily! -- in Oscar history. The 22-year-old star won the Best Actress Academy Award inside the Dolby Theater in Hollywood on Feb. 24. Ascending the Oscars stage in a stunning pale Dior Haute Couture gown, Lawrence suffered every actress' nightmare: She face-planted! Tripping on her sizable frock, the blonde fell down on the steps, and was quickly helped up.

Getting a standing ovation from some in the crowd, Lawrence quickly acknowledged the pratfall. "You guys are just standing up because you feel bad that I fell -- it's really embarrassing. This is nuts!"

Accepting her Oscar from The Artist's Jean Dujardin, Lawrence then acknowledged her competition: Zero Dark Thirty's Jessica Chastain, The Impossible's Naomi Watts, Amour's Emmanuelle Riva, and Beasts of the Southern Wild's Quvenzhane Wallis. "You were so magnificent, and it's been so amazing getting to know you," Lawrence said, "You've made this experience unforgettable."

Thanking her family and other colleagues, she then wished a happy birthday to French actress Riva, whose 86th birthday fell on Oscar Sunday.

Yeahhhhhhhh ia. I thought she was good, sure, but Oscar-level? Really? It didn't seem like the role was on the same level as the other nominees in terms of how challenging and deep it was. I thought the same thing about the whole movie though tbh.

Same. I was underwhelmed, to be honest. Her performance was good, but I didn't finish the film and think, "This deserves all the nominations it's gotten!" Meh. It was okay.

Exactly. It was a solid film, I enjoyed it ok, but for me did not live up to the hype. And now it's even more hyped, so oh well.

Yeah, that's basically my feeling on the whole thing. I wasn't in love with too many of the nominees this year but I definitely don't feel like SLP was on part with most of the other ones in general.

Ia. A fine movie, but not nearly Oscar-level. But then again Life of Pi won so many and all its special effects looked like total shit, so who knows what that even means anymore. (Granted, I didn't see LoP, but come on... if the clips you show of the movie's best moments look awful...)

i think jacki weaver deserved her nomination. i haven't watched les miserables, so i can't say she deserved to win over anne, though.
bossm 25th-Feb-2013 06:13 am (UTC)
I think the opposite. Naomi's and Jessica's roles weren't very challenging and they were missing a lot of depth.

Really? Interesting. I think Riva should have won, but I think anyone should have taken it over JLaw being nominated. I like her and think she'd probably earn an Oscar eventually, but I didn't think that was a very memorable or particularly great role to win on.

w h a t. cmp, did you watch the impossible? naomi almost drowned shooting that movie because she shot a lot of her scenes in a water tank where she was thrusted to and fro. Meanwhile, Jen got to shoot in a ballroom.
ellenpage 25th-Feb-2013 06:23 am (UTC)
No, I didn't see it. But I think our point is probably the same... JLaw did not deserve it compared to the other actresses in the category whose roles seemed much more challenging.
bossm 25th-Feb-2013 12:19 pm (UTC)
And because of that she deserves an Oscar?
ponpiri 25th-Feb-2013 06:15 am (UTC)
Nah. Q Wallis wasn't good, Jess was miscast and I don't care about Naomi.
ellenpage 25th-Feb-2013 06:17 am (UTC)
Maybe the beef sits with the nominations then because regardless of who else was nominated I didn't think JLaw's performance was Oscar-worthy.

really? me and my mom both said after seeing SLP that she deserved that oscar, hands down.

then my mom realized weeks later she was the girl from the hunger games and her mind was blown. and i told her she was also in winters bone (my parents loved it) and she turned into a stan.

Emmanuelle and Quvenzhane were the best performances in that category tbqh.
