Jennifer Lawrence Falls on Steps as She Wins Best Actress Oscar

And just like that, Jennifer Lawrence is immortalized -- goofily! -- in Oscar history. The 22-year-old star won the Best Actress Academy Award inside the Dolby Theater in Hollywood on Feb. 24. Ascending the Oscars stage in a stunning pale Dior Haute Couture gown, Lawrence suffered every actress' nightmare: She face-planted! Tripping on her sizable frock, the blonde fell down on the steps, and was quickly helped up.

Getting a standing ovation from some in the crowd, Lawrence quickly acknowledged the pratfall. "You guys are just standing up because you feel bad that I fell -- it's really embarrassing. This is nuts!"

Accepting her Oscar from The Artist's Jean Dujardin, Lawrence then acknowledged her competition: Zero Dark Thirty's Jessica Chastain, The Impossible's Naomi Watts, Amour's Emmanuelle Riva, and Beasts of the Southern Wild's Quvenzhane Wallis. "You were so magnificent, and it's been so amazing getting to know you," Lawrence said, "You've made this experience unforgettable."

Thanking her family and other colleagues, she then wished a happy birthday to French actress Riva, whose 86th birthday fell on Oscar Sunday.

awww I'm really happy she won. I was rooting for Jessica, but i'm not mad Jennifer won cause her performance was really great and she was really sweet today and when she fell i felt so sorry for her :( poor thing! I could even tell she was so nervous when she presented Adele.
mushroom18 25th-Feb-2013 07:36 am (UTC)
<3<3<3 I'm really happy that the Jessica Chastain fans are happy for JennLaw too. I like them both a lot and I can't stand that ONTD and the media like to pit them against each other
la_petite_singe 25th-Feb-2013 06:10 am (UTC)
OF COURSE SHE DID

seriously, that was the most predictable event all night. Love her to death and her speech was qt, but I'm annoyed she won for that particular movie/role. I dislike the idea that we're again encouraging DOL's writing of ~crazy~ women. However, Harvey's dark magic failed; that's the only thing SLP won!
fuk_q 25th-Feb-2013 06:20 am (UTC)
agreed
actxappalledx 25th-Feb-2013 06:51 am (UTC)
he really was only pushing JenLaw tho, tbh. He put all his fight into her, imo
hjohnson 25th-Feb-2013 02:21 pm (UTC)
You mean David O Russell?

You know it's from a BOOK right? And she does actually have a mental illness? And she was equally as 'crazy' in the book?
hotel 25th-Feb-2013 08:02 pm (UTC)
i think what they mean is that that's the kind of role that usually gets awards for women.

i'm only guessing, though.
bienenkiste 25th-Feb-2013 06:10 am (UTC)
hating or stanning y'all can't deny that Riva deserved way more

idc i'm bitter about this
wonderwomanhero 25th-Feb-2013 06:11 am (UTC)
I'm getting quite a bit of shit for stanning Riva over jlaw on tumblr lol
holyfrijoles_2 25th-Feb-2013 06:11 am (UTC)
I am too bb. NOT OVER IT NEVER OVER IT (i'll be over it tomorrow lbr)
ponpiri 25th-Feb-2013 06:12 am (UTC)
She did deserve it. I was rooting over her! I did call it though if not Riva, then Jen will get it.
logan_lerman 25th-Feb-2013 06:12 am (UTC)
eh she was a vegetable for most of the movie tho
goldengal1193 25th-Feb-2013 06:13 am (UTC)
I honestly disagree
kwikimart 25th-Feb-2013 06:13 am (UTC)
Me too bb

Whatever tho, that's life

fakevoices 25th-Feb-2013 06:15 am (UTC)
same here
roxiful 25th-Feb-2013 06:15 am (UTC)
I agree
mellarks 25th-Feb-2013 06:16 am (UTC)
Riva 100% deserved it more, negl.
whosoliver 25th-Feb-2013 06:17 am (UTC)
I can deny it

easily
fauxkaren 25th-Feb-2013 06:23 am (UTC)
Yep.
troy_macclure 25th-Feb-2013 06:24 am (UTC)
ia

i'm not angry over it tho
sprinklebell 25th-Feb-2013 06:30 am (UTC)
the oscars are a fashion show and aren't taken seriously in the not-hollywood film industry. it's not a talent thing
polekatz 25th-Feb-2013 06:30 am (UTC)
Riva has her bday to celebrate, she doesn't need anything else.
rickmansvoice 25th-Feb-2013 06:38 am (UTC)
gurl it would have been the perfect bday gift lbr.
ill_bitch 25th-Feb-2013 06:44 am (UTC)
i'm so bitter about this. IT WAS THE WOMAN'S BIRTHDAY FOR GOD'S SAKE
vettus 25th-Feb-2013 06:52 am (UTC)
Ita
crystalzelda 25th-Feb-2013 08:06 am (UTC)
ia tbh

French people are kinda salty about this too, mostly cause they thought her performance was better and the fact that Riva's 86 to JLaw's 22...
duckyduck92 25th-Feb-2013 06:10 am (UTC)
the best is when hugh came to her rescue
wonderwomanhero 25th-Feb-2013 06:10 am (UTC)
Emmanuelle Riva's icey glare caused her to trip. I am convinced.

Ugh I wish Riva had won, since she probably will not get another chance and I feel like this trip to America might have felt like a bit of wasted time for her, while JLaw still has plenty of opportunities to win oscars. But I did like that she wished Emmanuelle a happy birthday.
agentnever 25th-Feb-2013 06:12 am (UTC)
THIS. Riva DESERVED it and she won't get many more opportunities, maybe none at all.

JLaw is twenty fucking two. Were they that scared she'll never get nominated again? Over this "It Girl" thing.
whosoliver 25th-Feb-2013 06:18 am (UTC)
or maybe they just felt she outperformed Riva?
bossm 25th-Feb-2013 06:22 am (UTC)
It's wrong to give it to someone else and say that Jen can wait. She's still 22.
duchello 25th-Feb-2013 06:30 am (UTC)
but idk, then they win it for movies they deserve even less like meryl streep like that oscar was not for her last year
polekatz 25th-Feb-2013 06:33 am (UTC)
Why wouldn't Emmanuelle get anymore opportunities? If she's as amazing as people say she is then it shouldn't be a problem.
rainbowren 25th-Feb-2013 06:11 am (UTC)
LMAO, still can't believe this happened, she handled it well and I'm glad everyone gave her a standing ovation.
cab 25th-Feb-2013 06:11 am (UTC)
the clip of the movie gave me second hand embarrassment
ponpiri 25th-Feb-2013 06:11 am (UTC)
You stole my post OP.
kwikimart 25th-Feb-2013 06:11 am (UTC)
This isn't shade I just think it's a sad statement about Hollywood that people are so impressed by someone just because she acts normal.

She's not particularly interesting or clever or unique she just talks/acts like the average non-famous person.

Well I think the fact that she has a sense of humour about herself helps too tho.
robinsparkle 25th-Feb-2013 06:18 am (UTC)
I disagree (sort of, because I get where you're coming from) Jennifer has a way with people and it's really impressive to me tbh. She walked into her pre interview and nailed it. She knows how to recover and what to say, how to say it, etc. She's just incredibly personable and I think that's why everyone loves her.

edit: agreed with your last sentence

IA.

People saying how she's trying so hard need to look back on her old interviews.

ponpiri 25th-Feb-2013 06:29 am (UTC)
It isn't called Hollyweird without reason. She's been annoying me lately but I'm still rooting for her to stay sane.
x_neverenough 25th-Feb-2013 10:49 am (UTC)
I think her stans all love her because she reminds them of themselves. idg how anyone can say she's unique when thousands of girls are saying "omg she's just like me!!!" and it's so true-she's so average. I haven't heard one thing about her that makes her so~special like everyone is trying to convince me she is. she reminds me of half the girls I went to hs with.
hpxstac 25th-Feb-2013 03:13 pm (UTC)
Well I think she is unique by Hollywood standards because of the things you just mentioned. But does her personality seem unique outside of that? No, not really.

crashh_world 25th-Feb-2013 04:46 pm (UTC)
I think it's even more sad that people tear her down and call her fake for acting normal like wth

Someone tell me why winning an oscar at 22 is a big deal? Why should I be envious or jealous? I don't get it... LOL.
katiefitch 25th-Feb-2013 06:14 am (UTC)
most 22 year olds are knee deep in student debt and at admin assistant jobs living with their parents
she's an inspiration to us all

and i will never have as much money as her
ragechill 25th-Feb-2013 06:23 am (UTC)
But she's an actress... If you had a stage mom that could have easily been you. Like, I don't get it. LOL.

I want her life because I don't want student loans and want to live alone so I get that tbh!
hemsworth 25th-Feb-2013 07:57 am (UTC)
ugh the accuracy. it's breaking my heart
brucelynn 25th-Feb-2013 06:15 am (UTC)

that is something to be jealous and envious of ... shit

overprotected 25th-Feb-2013 06:16 am (UTC)
she's the second youngest winner ever

i don't really understand how you don't think it's a big deal. it's winning the most prestigious award you can get for your profession when most people are still in school
morgan90 25th-Feb-2013 06:16 am (UTC)
You're probably 16 and have a BMW your dad bought you
crashh_world 25th-Feb-2013 04:48 pm (UTC)
Because it's like starting out a job at 19 and becoming the CEO of a well established company in a few years for actresses. It's the pinacle of her career.

coffeenmorphine 25th-Feb-2013 06:13 am (UTC)
This made her even more "accessible", IMO. I know I Stan her, but that whole moment was just awesome.
agentnever 25th-Feb-2013 06:14 am (UTC)
Comments like this make me laugh at the people saying that saying her falling was staged to seem more accessible and endearing is far fetched.
ohkimosabe 25th-Feb-2013 06:20 am (UTC)

tiddlywinks103 25th-Feb-2013 07:06 am (UTC)
Comments like yours make me laugh because you feel like you're 'above it all' because you can see through her 'act', like if it could happen, in your head, it MUST have, and goddamn it, you will not be tricked into thinking she's a genuine person.

Go, you.
siri_greene 25th-Feb-2013 07:14 am (UTC)
how do you live your life being so jaded about everything?? i hope this is your hate talking, otherwise you are a sad person
