VS Model tells "an honest personal narrative of what privilege means"

She has walked the catwalk runways for brands such as Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren and appeared in the pages of Vogue. But Victoria's Secret model Cameron Russell is warning girls away from a modelling career. The 25-year-old, who recently spoke at the annual TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) conference in Palm Springs, condemned the fashion's industry's obsession with beautiful, skinny white women.

She said:

For the past few centuries we have defined beauty not just as health and youth that we are biologically programmed to admire. But also as tall, slender figures and femininity and white skin. This is a legacy that was built for me and its a legacy that I have been cashing out on.

"(She also remarks that at the time of her first-ever swimwear shoot, for Allure, she had not yet gotten her period.)"

It makes me sick that the fashion/beauty industry elevates children/teenagers as the epitome of womenly beauty tbh.

Good for her for speaking so candidly, and trying to shed light/open a discussion.

ugh that reminds me of the whole thing with abercrombie kids selling padded bikini tops
amanda_aces 23rd-Feb-2013 02:55 am (UTC)
For the longest time I didn't realize how young models were and I just thought that there was an endless supply of small breasted and hipped white girls walking around somewhere.

right? i remember watching ANTM and listening to the judges deliberate on the top three (i think it was melrose, caridee and eugena that cycle?) and all the judges were like "melrose is just too old" and i was like, uhhh she's only like 25! but that's basically ancient in a lot of modelling gigs, although it does seem a decent amount of older models are still getting work.
anydoppelganger 23rd-Feb-2013 02:56 am (UTC)
IA, that was really disturbing.
unmellow_yellow 23rd-Feb-2013 03:58 am (UTC)
exactly
magwildwood 23rd-Feb-2013 04:44 am (UTC)
yeah, i feel like some of her point was lost in this post. some may take issue with her comments about race, but the whole talk basically undercut her own industry. she almost painted the fashion industry as lacking complete value, which is a pretty bold thing to do. some here may not think she has a right to speak on skin color, but she clearly has the right to speak about being a young adolescent female in a sexualized industry, whose outward appearance is considered her main contribution to this world. i think some people zeroed in on the "legacy that I have been cashing out on" comment and have written off the rest of her talk.

Yeah the fashion industry is pretty disgusting. They idealize youth to the point where they use actual children to model clothes and merchandise geared to an adult base, which is problematic for a lot of reasons. The sexualization of said children is just one of many really depressing aspects of doing that.

fasdsr2 23rd-Feb-2013 03:36 am (UTC)
nothing against the model, but lol, mte. have you seen the onion's parodies of ted talks?
snowweisz 23rd-Feb-2013 04:15 am (UTC)
I definitely have problems with the way the ideas are basically handpicked by whoever is organizing the talk and a lot of useless stuff goes up... But idk, every now and then a talk like this one happens and I feel it's all worth it.

I love Ted Talk but I had to unfollow them on youtube because they were clogging up my feed. I could hardly see anyone else's videos for all the Ted Talks posted.
corroded_tears 23rd-Feb-2013 03:29 am (UTC)
Same. I use their app to check for stuff that pops out at me/pertains to my interests.
nathanandbarry 23rd-Feb-2013 03:40 am (UTC)
ohhhh. good idea!
in_suburb 23rd-Feb-2013 03:17 am (UTC)
She makes non-model people quite happy.
headswillroll88 23rd-Feb-2013 03:22 am (UTC)
because she's clearly just saying this to appease non-models and none of it has any truth.
lathwen1 23rd-Feb-2013 03:35 am (UTC)
Really liked what she said in the video.
That part of the period tho. wow
flumes 23rd-Feb-2013 03:36 am (UTC)
i would never recommend modeling to anyone. this was a great thing to read and a great thing for her to say but i can't help be idk sad that people will listen to her because she's all these things but not other women or the women who have had to fucking struggle in this industry,

anyway, she's beautiful. such a fucking shame.
