Lena Dunham Responds to Anger Over Comedian's N-Word Tweet

Lena Dunham didn't speak to the press at the Writers Guild Awards last Sunday, nor did she give a long speech when she accepted the trophy for best new series. And yet, she still finds herself embroiled in a controversy that launched during the show, even though it was none of her doing.

Comedian and presenter Lisa Lampanelli, who is famously known for her foul mouth, tweeted a photo of herself and Dunham at the awards, with the caption "Me with my n---a @LenaDunham of @HBOGirls - I love this beyotch!" Predictably, the tweet fired up critics, angry at Lampanelli -- a white woman -- for using the word.

One writer, Shayla Pierce, wrote several stories for various online publications expressing her outrage, and then took to Twitter to call out Dunham for not condemning Lampanelli.

".@LenaDunham has showed her true colors on this whole n-word debacle. Her silence speaks volumes," she tweeted. "I don't think I'll be watching @girlsHBO anymore. And I say that with honest sadness... Lena advertises herself as a progressive but she's chosen not to address the situation. She seems phony to me now."

Dunham responded on Twitter, writing that she would never use the n-word and that Lampanelli's tweet made her "supremely uncomfortable," but stayed silent because "twitter debates breed more twitter debates."

She added that "140 characters will never be enough for the kind of dialogue that will actually help us address issues of race and class," and then commended Pierce for a "beautifully written piece," apologizing for any discomfort she may have felt.

Pierce happily accepted her response, writing, "Thank you so much. And I do <3 you and your work. Thanks for addressing this *hugsies* @lenadunham."

For her part, Lampanelli has defended her use of the word, saying "The N-word ending in 'er' is far different context from the word ending in 'a.' Ask any person who knows the urban dictionary, it means 'friend."

i can put your entire, razor-thin argument against her, this whole controvery, and me to rest: nice assumptions about my ivory tower, but "b", i'm not white. and the fact that that is your direct assumption based off my argument means you have a whole slew of issues to deal with that don't need to directly involve this chick, or me.

Did I call you white, sis

Did I

The fact that you're not white doesn't change the ignorance and delusion that's wafting from your comments.

pretty implicit by tellng me to "come down from my ivory tower," which again, DIRECTLY implies that you think i hold some some kind of privilege, JUST BECAUSE I DON'T AGREE WITH YOU.

i'm a hispanic, from very meager means, and a single mother. i literally fall in no cross-section of what lena dunham is, or what she writes, and i respect the hell out of her writing, and her creativity.

clearly, you do not, and that has more to do with the chip on your shoulder than anything else.

I'm pretty sure your comments about "black" blacks, talking about jewish people in this particular context like one marginalized group will do just as well as any other, and the fact that you think all it takes are a few posts on a website to "put this issue to rest" are the real things that bespeaks your ignorance.

You don't have to think this is a problem, you really don't. No one is requiring you to agree, to campaign Dunham for more PoC or even to criticize her. But you're the one who brought this ire on yourself by telling someone to shut the fuck up about it, and I won't apologize for not thinking it's cute that you're trying to silence others on this issue. Don't want to talk about it? Don't think it's important? Fine. Then exit the thread and the post, keep your shut ups to yourself and there won't be any issues.

i never said i don't wanna talk about "it", i never said i want to "silence" people on "this issue" -- b/c, AGAIN, the issue clearly at hand here is so much bigger and more global than who lena dunham is and represents, and a fucking show like GIRLS, my god.

again, you're completely over-generalizing my comments, because really you have nothing to grasp at. i'm done arguing with you. you have a huge chip on your shoulder, and that's fine, but quit trying to make lena dunham the arbiter of your woes. if you want more of a voice for POC, then how's about you pull away the ONTD and lena dunham posts and really do something positive about it?

"i never said i want to "silence" people on "this issue"

"shut the fuck up"

You don't even know what you're saying anymore, it's kinda funny in a sad way

Have fun backpedalling babe

absolutely hilarious that you're still using that like that was even remotely the crux of my argument. so i guess i'll say it again, shut the fuck up.

you seriously need to deal w/ the chip on your shoulder before you go on wasting any more time pressing on lena dunham, and me - since i'm up in my ivory tower, and all.
crystalzelda 23rd-Feb-2013 12:22 am (UTC)
You've said chip on your shoulder like 5 times already, do you want to repeat yourself again just to make sure I've got it?

Weren't you leaving? Guess you wanted to come back to prove my point - thanks, appreciate it!

K. Good luck making progress on your movement. In this post. About Lena Dunham. About something negative that she didn't even say.

You are 100% in everything you say in this thread, girl, and I admire and respect you for not backing down or letting yourself get too ruffled. <3

I love you for this. These people need a dose of reality. They sit here and argue with you that this random show doesn't have anyone representing them when most shows have no one representing you. And while that sucks, it's not Lena's fault these people feel like they need to be represented on a show they don't even like anyways.
