Lena Dunham Responds to Anger Over Comedian's N-Word Tweet

Lena Dunham didn't speak to the press at the Writers Guild Awards last Sunday, nor did she give a long speech when she accepted the trophy for best new series. And yet, she still finds herself embroiled in a controversy that launched during the show, even though it was none of her doing.

Comedian and presenter Lisa Lampanelli, who is famously known for her foul mouth, tweeted a photo of herself and Dunham at the awards, with the caption "Me with my n---a @LenaDunham of @HBOGirls - I love this beyotch!" Predictably, the tweet fired up critics, angry at Lampanelli -- a white woman -- for using the word.

One writer, Shayla Pierce, wrote several stories for various online publications expressing her outrage, and then took to Twitter to call out Dunham for not condemning Lampanelli.

".@LenaDunham has showed her true colors on this whole n-word debacle. Her silence speaks volumes," she tweeted. "I don't think I'll be watching @girlsHBO anymore. And I say that with honest sadness... Lena advertises herself as a progressive but she's chosen not to address the situation. She seems phony to me now."

Dunham responded on Twitter, writing that she would never use the n-word and that Lampanelli's tweet made her "supremely uncomfortable," but stayed silent because "twitter debates breed more twitter debates."

She added that "140 characters will never be enough for the kind of dialogue that will actually help us address issues of race and class," and then commended Pierce for a "beautifully written piece," apologizing for any discomfort she may have felt.

Pierce happily accepted her response, writing, "Thank you so much. And I do <3 you and your work. Thanks for addressing this *hugsies* @lenadunham."

For her part, Lampanelli has defended her use of the word, saying "The N-word ending in 'er' is far different context from the word ending in 'a.' Ask any person who knows the urban dictionary, it means 'friend."

Because what she's doing isn't cool and she should get a break... why...? Because you like her? Because you can relate to her? because you're sick of hearing people getting angry about racist shit? Being a racist piece of crap is never cool and I don't care how tired you get of people calling this shit out. If it bugs you so much go move to some backwoods hillbilly clusterfuck in Mississippi where you'll never have to hear anyone complain about racism again.

I mean, fucking seriously, all this crap and "140 characters will never be enough for the kind of dialogue that will actually help us address issues of race and class," but she's oh so uncomfortable by the n-word and yet oh so comfortable to keep her racist fuck bff's on writing staff?

I just don't get how people can be so passive about this crap just because "Oh Lena is JUST like me and my BFF's <3" If you like the show, fine, but doesn't make all this okay. Yeah, people were getting upset as far back as Friends, and I hope people will continue to be upset until this trend of monochromatic casting in settings where it absolutely doesn't make sense just so ~'the cast is more relatable to mainstream audiences'~ goes away.

I think what annoys me the most is that it doesn't seem like people ARE upset about monochromatic casting in settings where they don't make sense. That happens on almost every TV show including ones that people on here stan for hardcore. However, Lena is ugly and a product of nepotism so she is basically the only one I ever see called out.
I guess whining about one show and one person makes people feel like they are making a difference without really having to get involved or boycott every show that does it?

I have never seen an episode of Girls so it isn't that I like the show. I guess it just feels like the focus is so narrowed that it doesn't even open up good dialogue about a serious issue today.

cuz they privileged as fuck and these issues don't affect them. or they deny that they do.

How is she racist, though? That's all I honestly want to know. I don't care much for her and her overrated work, but I follow ONTD's general hatred of this girl, and I don't recall her being a racist.

Though if you were referring to that Lampanelli lady, then carry on, and my bad.

I read this before she blew up and I couldn't believe her ignorance.

That's why she's racist.

I'm marrying into a Japanese family and still have a lot to learn about Japan and Japanese customs, but what the actual fuck. "Uncrossable culture chasm"?

this isn't change.org or the hrc. i can complain about the number of her hate posts as freely as y'all can complain about her bullshit. all in all neither of us adds or detracts from celebrities doing/saying stupid shit. there are people on here who do actually make wank posts just to hear your pressed diatribes toward comments like mine and again they do nothing but add to the animosity this site creates towards other members. i can actually do two things at once i.e. hate what she stands for and hate that we have to have a million posts about her and the hundred repetitive comments that follow. this only gives her more attention to do these stupid things in the first place.
