Oscar Stars' Most Embarrassing Roles

Anne Hathaway, Bride Wars (2009)
She may be sitting pretty as a frontrunner nominee for Best Supporting Actress for her heart-wrenching portrayal of Fantine in 2012's epic Les Miserables, but just three years prior, Hathaway was tugging at wedding dresses with on-screen frenemy Kate Hudson in rom-com Bride War

Eddie Murphy, Norbit (2007)
Eddie Murphy didn't walk away with the statuette for Best Supporting Actor for his role in 2007's musical hit Dreamgirls, but he did gain his peers' respect for his part as James "Thunder" Early opposite Jennifer Hudson, Jamie Foxx and Beyonce. The comedic actor followed up his dramatic role with some decidedly lighter (and controversial!) fare, however, with 2007's Norbit.

Meryl Streep, Mamma Mia! (2008)
Nobody does it quite like Meryl Streep. The iconic movie actress, who is revered as one of the greatest living film actresses, has tackled a whole slew of award-worthy roles, including her Best Actress win for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in 2011's The Iron Lady. Just three years prior, however, Streep let her hair down to head up the cast of Mamma Mia!, singing ABBA hits like it was nobody's business.

Halle Berry, The Flintstones (1994)
Yabba dabba doo! Before she was a red carpet regular, turning heads in roles like 2012's Cloud Atlas or 2001's Monster's Ball (for which she took home the Best Actress Oscar, making history as the first black woman to win the top honors), Halle Berry was making history in a different way. Case in point, playing Miss Stone in 1994's live-action version of The Flintstones.

Hilary Swank, The Next Karate Kid (1994)
We always knew she was a fighter. A young Hilary Swank (she was just 20 at the time) played a determined martial artist in 1994's The Next Karate Kid -- 10 years later, the talented actress would go on to take home the Best Actress Academy Award for her role as a headstrong boxer in Clint Eastwood's Million Dollar Baby.

Sandra Bullock, Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous (2005)
Hollywood's golden girl has no problems laughing at herself -- as evidenced by such blockbuster rom-com hits as Miss Congeniality and The Proposal. But Sandra Bullock did a 180 with her career in four years by starring in 2009's The Blind Side following her reprisal of her role as beloved FBI agent Gracie Hart in Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Famous.

Bride Wars is cringe-worthy bad even for romcom standards.

still 100x better than When in Rome or Something Borrowed.

Both of those were really bad. I'm not a really picky person lol and I like a lot of bad movies, but I HATE Something Borrowed. Ugh I hate it.

I didn't really have a problem with Something Borrowed until Ethan told Rachel he loved her...and then nothing came of it, and she just went back to Dex anyway. WHAT WAS THE POINT OF THE SCENE THEN. Ughhhh. It kind of ruined the entire movie for me.

I read the book, and I read the sequel "Something Blue" therefore I cannot ruin it by watching the movies.

IA - at least Kristen Bell's character was actually kinda likable, which is better than everyone in Something Borrowed and Bride Wars.
licorrice 21st-Feb-2013 10:54 pm (UTC)
omg no ! don't even try something borrowed was perfection.
howlcosmiclove 21st-Feb-2013 11:57 pm (UTC)
Something Borrowed was such a waste of film. I only made it fifteen minutes in before I cut that shit off.
zoaster_toaster 22nd-Feb-2013 12:00 am (UTC)
When in Rome isn't that bad (especially next to Something Borrowed and Bride Wars).
