Seven-figure book deal for "Game of Thrones for women, inspired by Barack Obama"

A debut author who graduated from the celebrated Iowa Writers' Workshop has a seven-figure book deal.

HarperCollins announced Wednesday that it will publish Erika Johansen's "Queen of the Tearling," a fantasy trilogy inspired in part by Barack Obama.

A person with knowledge of the negotiations said Wednesday the deal was worth seven figures. The person was not authorized to discuss financial details and spoke on condition of anonymity.

The 35-year-old Johansen says she heard then-Sen. Obama give a speech in 2007 and was inspired to create the series' idealistic heroine, 19-year-old Kelsea Glynn. The publisher is billing the books as a female version of George R.R. Martin's "Game of Thrones."

Yay Iowa Writers' Workshop! That's where my boyfriend goes right now. I hope there's a seven figure advance in his future, lol.

Obligatory writer-rage comment.

In all seriousness though, I'm starting to think along the same lines as the OP - where is my shitty white-cock Inuyasha fanfic from years long since past? I need to cash that check - just gotta rename the character & I'm in business.

Bwaha I was quite the Inuyasha fanfic author back in the day. Kagome/Sesshomaru forever!!1 I found a fic in a dusty old flash drive a few weeks back and laughed and laughed at my writing before promptly deleting it.
cruel_fortuna 21st-Feb-2013 10:03 pm (UTC)
Man, I was all about Kouga/Inuyasha - the hate-fucking scenes were basically all I ever wrote - I never plotted shit!

& I still have all my fic from ye olde days on a flash-drive. I still remember the day my mom found one of my fics, ... I got grounded from the computer for a YEAR ( all because I was writing oral sex scenes at the tender age of 9. )

Ah, memories.

Is this gonna be a fucked up version in which Ser Christian of Grey meets Lady Anastasia Steele, in which utterly godawful puns of 'winter is coming' (geddit??) are made...
hawaii_bombay 21st-Feb-2013 09:39 pm (UTC)
You know nothing, Ser Christian of Grey.
spankmypirate 21st-Feb-2013 09:42 pm (UTC)
The woman who brought me into this world was a crack whore, Renly. Go to sleep.
iamspam99 21st-Feb-2013 09:42 pm (UTC)
It can hardly be more fucked up than the original, lbr.

Ser Christian of Grey, his sex dungeon and his mommy issues will look positively vanilla next to characters Joffrey, Roose and Ramsay.

Silly rabbits. Everyone knows that all fantasy books are inherently aimed at men unless they have a cover with a mysterious-looking girl not looking directly at the camera.

'GoT for women' ? I didn't know that Westeros.org did YA novel write-ups.

The characters are pretty much 50/50 male/female and all of the best ones are the girls tbh
aubade_saudade 21st-Feb-2013 09:43 pm (UTC)
For women? Because it has a female protagonist?

Why, what, idgi

I whole concept of "books for women" and how men don't like them and neither do "some women" and how that makes you into a particular kind of person who seeks out corniness and entertainment but not rly interested in being intellectually stimulated

I read all the fucking things, and so do most women whether it be classics, scifi or romance

Well, if she went to Iowa, at least we know she should be able to write.

And here I was thinking that ASOIAF was just for everyone over the age of about 14/15...(younger than that and the violence/sex scenes are a but much IMO)

And wtf at the book being based on Obama, is he going to be the hero? The love interest? The special white girl protagonist's cool sidekick? So many questions...
nicolars 21st-Feb-2013 09:55 pm (UTC)
I have a feeling the writer went with "What if Obama was a pretty white teenage girl?"
johnjie 22nd-Feb-2013 08:53 am (UTC)
Ugh of course
wesaynicole 21st-Feb-2013 10:01 pm (UTC)
i still don't get what Obama has to do with this hot mess tho
mila_casillas 21st-Feb-2013 10:12 pm (UTC)
I am as confused as you are, John.

Politics? I don't get why everyone is so confused tbh.
argyle_strikes 21st-Feb-2013 10:11 pm (UTC)
well, i am here for more fantasy written by women. she graduated from a really great writing program, and i'm sure the marketing of "got for women" comes from the publisher, not her intentions writing the book. seems like it could be really good :)
red_rapture 22nd-Feb-2013 12:47 am (UTC)
Yeah, I kind of wondered about that too. Sometimes an author doesn't have a lot of say in how they're marketed. I'm gonna wait until the actual book comes out to throw stones.
slurp 22nd-Feb-2013 10:12 am (UTC)
Same, so many people hatin' before we even know the plot.
soavantgarde 21st-Feb-2013 10:25 pm (UTC)

no.
hollis1975 21st-Feb-2013 10:57 pm (UTC)
yeah like the president wants to be dragged into this hot shit
canuckgirl33 21st-Feb-2013 11:57 pm (UTC)
This book offends me and I am not even a GOT fan. I don't need a freaking book specially catered to me to enjoy reading about blood, guts and hot sex. Seriously
slurp 22nd-Feb-2013 11:04 am (UTC)
There is no HOT sex in GoT.
