Lena Dunham made me a feminist

by Nathan Walker

Mere seconds after tweeting that my pitch to write this article was accepted, some random guy on Twitter had this to say to me: "Lena Dunham is the voice of a masturbatory, hyper-self & her pathological titty baring represents Generation Shit."

I mean, such vitriole and hate for a woman who makes a comedic television show that you can't even watch on public TV!?!?

For years now, my wife has insisted that I'm a feminist despite my arguments that I'm not. She says that since I believe a woman has the right to work for the same pay as any man that I'm inherently a feminist. My half-hearted response was that I couldn't possibly be. I've never read any feminist literature, never participated in a rally, and I certainly can't stand behind the idea that a woman can do everything a man can (or vice versa). To be clear though, I do believe in equal rights, equal pay for equal work and that, intellectually men and women are equals. I also totally love the way women look naked. So, I couldn't possibly be a feminist, right?

In steps, Lena Dunham and her show that you've no doubt heard all about by now, Girls. A show that I personally find to be wildly entertaining despite the fact that the male characters make my skin crawl. Girls instantly became quite controversial as it's a comedic television show that is breaking new ground by depicting the lives of young, white people in their 20s. Also, it's the only TV show where there's no ethnic diversity. Oh, and and and, it's the only TV show that attempts to take a humorous look at the lives of people transitioning from childhood into adulthood. Oh, jeesh, I forgot it's also the only television show that allows women to be on camera naked. Shit! One more thing, it's also the only TV show that focuses on people of enough privilege and money that they can waste their days away following their whims.

It gets betterCollapse )

She taught me to never get that hair cut she has right now.
shahrazade_bard 20th-Feb-2013 02:17 am (UTC)
She taught me not to buy heels you can't fucking walk in. And whatever you do, don't wear them on camera.

Nope, wait, I knew that already. She just reenforced the idea.

There's nothing I like more than watching ONTD rip a stupid white man with entitled opinions to shreds.

Actually the constant nudity on Game of Thrones really annoys me. I'm no prude, but I always feel as if the show is striving to pander to the neckbeard part of the audience.
shangman 19th-Feb-2013 08:49 pm (UTC)
I stopped watching because they only care about their awful fanboys and their dicks tbh.
jackiemust_die 19th-Feb-2013 08:51 pm (UTC)
I couldn't get into it because it introduced too many characters that i just could not work up the strength to give a shit about. I think one day i'll try to give it another shot
rewrittentime 19th-Feb-2013 09:04 pm (UTC)
ikr
it's so gross
ronnie_luvs_u 19th-Feb-2013 08:52 pm (UTC)
I totally see it that way too. there is no other reason why there have to be bare tits in every.fucking.episode. planted there in completely contrived ways.
spartacus 19th-Feb-2013 08:55 pm (UTC)
same here, and there was a director of an episode who said that the producers basically told him to tit it up bc he could if he wanted so....
simprov 19th-Feb-2013 09:06 pm (UTC)
play with her ass

i watch it with my dad and its just so awkward sometimes
msloserrific 19th-Feb-2013 09:25 pm (UTC)
I loved the SNL skit about it, where one of the executive producers was a thirteen year old boy
mankini 19th-Feb-2013 09:31 pm (UTC)
Same.
blueboatdreams 19th-Feb-2013 09:38 pm (UTC)
it's overloaded with tits. it's one of the biggest flaws of the show.
bienenkiste 19th-Feb-2013 09:47 pm (UTC)
ugh ikr.
ascot_gavotte 19th-Feb-2013 09:53 pm (UTC)
it's annoying because it's staged awkwardly and it's not hot
anydoppelganger 19th-Feb-2013 10:16 pm (UTC)
the show is just way too sexy and I don't mean that in a good way. I don't have a problem with nudity or graphic sex if it's presented in a realistic way (tbh Girls does this pretty well), but GoT is just like softcore porn aimed at their target demographic of 18-49 year old dudes. I mean, maybe realism is too much to ask from a fantasy series, but idk, isn't GoT supposed to be the anti-Tolkien in its more nuanced depictions of power and morality? I just find it really hard to believe that all the chicks in Westeros are perfectly shaved and slim and healthy-looking.
velvetunicorn 20th-Feb-2013 03:05 am (UTC)
no it totally does. i feel like it's really gratuitious. I was talking to a friend who read the books as well because although they do have a lot of sex and prostitues in the book, it's not really a main plot point. There are so many more interesting things to focus on that to include those scenes as opposed to the more interesting intrigues is disappointing. I actually stopped watching season two for that reason although now I want to catch up.
yeahwell_britt 19th-Feb-2013 08:47 pm (UTC)
can we get like a 30 day moratorium on lena dunham posts?

am i using 'moratorium' correctly?

i don't get how anyone cannot be a feminist
tadashee 19th-Feb-2013 08:54 pm (UTC)
Because they have a stereotypical and skewed vision of what it means. It's sad.
mollywobbles867 19th-Feb-2013 09:18 pm (UTC)
Especially women. In my very first class of grad school, I told my partners in a group activity that I'm a feminist and they were like "I'm not! I like men!" and I was just like "............" They were women. Thank goodness I found feminist friends in other classes eventually.

One of them was a total moron, though. She was the laziest grad student ever. She didn't care as long as she made a B, which since you have to get really good grades to stay in the program and they will look at you like you don't belong if you make more than two B's, was just really stupid and arrogant of her.
crystalzelda 19th-Feb-2013 09:19 pm (UTC)
There's valid reasons not to be one that deals with intersectionality and the movement's history of erasure and prioritizing straight white cis middle class educated women, but like lbr the majority of the people who shun feminism don't do so bc of those reasons, most people think that feminist = man hating bra burning extremist. Welp.
drownamydrown 19th-Feb-2013 09:30 pm (UTC)
Preach.
blueboatdreams 19th-Feb-2013 09:39 pm (UTC)

B/c feminism has a history of exclusion and neglect?
Feminism is innately biased?
Also, there are other ways you can be for women's rights w/o being a feminist, such as womanism, egalitarianism, and humanism?
jesustolemybike 19th-Feb-2013 08:49 pm (UTC)
i am not commenting on this haughtily written piece except for to say entourage was probably the biggest piece of garbage hbo ever put on the air. i hate girls but nothing compares to that piece of shit
imnotasquirrel 19th-Feb-2013 08:49 pm (UTC)
oh shut up, nathan walker. you fool.
dandyxwarhol 19th-Feb-2013 08:49 pm (UTC)
Did Kareem Abdul Jabbar take off his goggles, put down his sky hook, and take to the Huffington Post to publicly shame Judd Apatow (a.k.a., the producer of Girls) when he wrote and produced a similarly themed show called Freaks & Geeks? It didn't have titties, but it did have an entirely white cast of teens set in Detroit fucking Michigan. Was the main character a self-centered girl who used people and her parents to get what she wanted? You bet your ass she was. Did the feminists cry and say "but what does Lindsay Weir stand for!?!?" No, they didn't. Why? Because it was a TV show written and produced for our entertainment.

no... because Lindsay Weir is a high school student, not a grown ass woman.

I'm sure people talked about it... but it's a whole different show, time period, feel, theme, etc etc
dandyxwarhol 19th-Feb-2013 08:57 pm (UTC)
I guess, but how can you compare a 17 yr old in 1980 vs a 25 yr old in 2013? A lot has changed in terms of sexism, racism etc. The stories are set 30 years apart.

I am shocked that a man whose sole connection to feminism is watching Girls hasn't heard feminist criticisms about Judd Apatow films. SHOCKED I SAY.

lol, right? Even the fucking star of Knocked Up slammed it for its portrayal of women.
