Kate Upton’s Trainer Defends Her ‘Porky’ Body

Celebrity trainer David Kirsch is known for lifting, firming, and toning some of the best bodies that appear on the runway, silver screen, and glossy magazine covers. Heidi Klum's flat stomach? Kirsch-ed. Karolina Kurkova's lifted tush? Kirsch-ed. Liv Tyler's everything? Kirsch-ed. The latest addition to the Manhattan-based, nutrition-obsessed trainer's collection of toned clients is none other than Kate Upton, two-time cover girl of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue and owner of the most enviable set of boobs we've seen, ever. The two first started working together in August out of Kirsch's Madison Square Club when she wanted some basic body maintenance, and things went into overdrive once it started to get closer to the arctic photo shoot. "I made it very clear to her, I love her curves and I wasn't going to do anything to [make her] skinnier," said the body-conscious Kirsch. "It was about toning her legs, butt, abs, arms, and to really dial into the diet."

Which of her body parts did you try to focus on and how?
Her abs, butt, legs, thighs, and arms. We did a lot of boxing, kick boxing, and stability ball work. We also did a lot of interval training, like wind sprints on the treadmill and outside. She wasn't a huge fan of those, but it helps to get the overall body toned and it gets the metabolism up.

How often did you two work out together?
When she was in New York, I saw her every day, double sessions. She even did extra cardio on her own after the actual workout. It ended up being two to two and a half hours a day for four weeks. That's a lot of Kirsch-ing.

How did you change her diet and nutrition?
When we started in August, she started out with the 48 Hour Super Charged cleanse, then moved onto the 5 Day Ultimate Detox. Leading up to the shoot in December, she did the 7 Day Cleanse a couple of times, consecutively.

How did you ensure she didn't lose too much of the curviness for which she's famous?
Look, she's eating [well], she's cleaned out of the junk, but ultimately it's genetics. She's got curves. There was no way I was going to "uncurve" her. That was never my objective. I didn't do a lot of weights with her. Instead we did a lot of floor movements and working out with resistance bands. At the end of the day, the objective was not to look like a runway model, but tighten up what she's got to look as amazing as she can.

Are you happy with how she looks in Sports Illustrated?
Have you seen the body paint pictures? They're great. The cover? I don't think they used the best picture. I don't know how they ultimately determined that. Maybe they just wanted to show a lot of boob and I guess that's because of their target audience.

What's your favorite aspect of her body?
I love curves. She is the quintessential all-American girl. She's fresh, sunny, and natural, and not too skinny. We're not advocating that stick-thin, unhealthy, anorexic approach to modeling. She's got a little extra meat. I love that physical aspect of her from her chest to curvy hip. I saw a great difference in her core from before we started to when she shot with SI. Her butt, thighs, and legs got stronger, leaner. It was from all those dead lifts, sumo lunges, and platypus walks. All of those exercises are about tightening and toning.

What's your take on the haters out there who think she's too curvy?
I posted all of her pictures from SI on my Facebook and there were the people who said, "Oh she's porky, she's fat." But my response is, "You guys are all entitled to your opinion, and I know I'm biased, but I would sooner have that healthy body than one that is too thin." She also embraces it. She's like, "I got great boobs. Hello, they're there. They're not going anywhere."

So speaking of those boobs, how many sports bras did she have to wear to rein those in?
No comment, no comment. [Though lots of laughing.]

I'm too lazy to lift weights so I do barre method, pilates, and dance aerobics about four times a week at my gym.

joining a really nice gym was important since if your gym is gross then you never want to go there. my gym's shower is a million times nicer than my own so I end up working out more to get that sweet sweet water pressure.
brenden 19th-Feb-2013 07:57 pm (UTC)
i have joined a gym close to my house, but i hate it

I exercise my fingers by getting on ONTD, I walk up and down the stairs to get food, and don't forget about the calories I burn while sleeping.

Yoga, pilates, kickboxing, and Zumba classes at my gym. Occasionally I'll do some weight lifting but I like group fitness classes a lot more than working out alone.

Pilates with some of the ballet stretches I learned as a kid. Keeps me sane and flexible. :) I can't eat soy products for health reasons, so I just limit my carbs, sugar and incorporate fresh water fish into my diet. No pork & only local beef. I did have a bender yesterday where I hadn't eaten candy in months & ate three candy bars, sooo......nobody's perfect haha

i am a dog walker, so i'm pretty active.

i like to run...training for a half-marathon, so i usually run anywhere from 15-25 miles a week.

then 5-6 nights a week i do 30-45 minutes of work with weights.

i don't diet at all though, noooo thanks.

Oops. I didn't mean to reply to your comment. On my phone. You are right though. It's insane the amount of coverage she has gotten for having an average woman's breast size. And then their is all this talk about her being fat which is ridiculous. I guess being a model, you know you will receive the physical scrutiny, but it's out of hand.

The Superman and swimming exercises are good for back workouts. Lay on your stomach and lift opposite arm to opposite leg for about 30 sec. You can also lift both arms and legs and move them in a swimming motion. Try to lift your chest of the ground and make sure your spine's aligned to prevent injury.

So speaking of those boobs, how many sports bras did she have to wear to rein those in?
No comment, no comment. [Though lots of laughing.]

MAN i am hating this bit. i'd bet my tits are the same size as hers or bigger, and i wear one great sports bra that manages me just fine. plus the "though lots of laughing" thing just comes off gross, like "heh heh boobies". :/
koboldmaki 19th-Feb-2013 08:55 pm (UTC)
So much this. I mean sure, if her sports bras are like the bikini tops she had to wear for this shoot, she'd need three per boob, but one would hope she's got better stuff.
quotidian_quire 19th-Feb-2013 09:48 pm (UTC)
Same. I am all about having a good bra for working out. Well, I'm an advocate for good bras all the time, actually, but they are ESSENTIAL for exercise. Too painful otherwise!
liddlebins 19th-Feb-2013 10:25 pm (UTC)
maybe he was laughing more at the question itself; idk but it would have totally caught me off guard. how do you politely respond to a question like that about one of your clients?
snitchster 20th-Feb-2013 10:51 pm (UTC)
this so much.

you can wear as many crappy sports bras as youwant, but if you dont have one that fits right/is tight enough, it doesnt make any difference...

Zumba, spinning, running, nike training club. I need to get back into doing some better strength training, but my right knee does not like body pump.

what size is she supposed to be?

i lost like 10 - 12 lbs since starting the slow carb diet/working out about a month ago. i am disappointed that I haven't lost more but I can see the results so it's really exciting! i have been too broke to waste gas on driving to the gym so i try to make time to do youtube workouts. i have done a few fitness blender ones but it's really hard for me to keep up :[ also my social anxiety is preventing me from taking a boot camp class at the gym because i don't want to look stupid
sweetlilcanuck 19th-Feb-2013 07:56 pm (UTC)
lots of jillian michael's stuff is on there, including 30 day shred.
kissoffools Re: good youtube workouts?19th-Feb-2013 07:59 pm (UTC)
girl, are you saying you started your new regime a month ago, lost 10-12 lbs, and you're disappointed you haven't lost MORE? no way, you are doing damn good. in general, a safe weight loss is considered 1-2 lbs per week, though it can be a bit more/quicker when you're first starting out. so if it's only been 4ish weeks and you lost 10-12lbs? you're doing something right, girl. results don't happen overnight, believe me.
awkwardmumbles Re: good youtube workouts?19th-Feb-2013 08:08 pm (UTC)
i'm so hard on my self lol i want to snap my fingers and be in a bikini and theres so much work to be done!

On days that I don't feel like going to the gym(like today), the 'BeFit' channel on youtube is my everything. They have a lot of different workouts(including Jillian Michaels stuff)

Also, 'ToneItUp'

If I didn't enjoy flirting at the gym so much(and the social interaction), I'd probably cancel my membership. The internet has all the workouts you need.
weekendwars Re: good youtube workouts?19th-Feb-2013 08:05 pm (UTC)
blogilates has some good workouts

Take the bootcamp class! I was 170 and 5'6 and I took it at A place where I ran next to professional cheerleaders. I was the heaviest person in the room. I had to stop or walk sometimes, but everyone was so encouraging and I've been doing so much better now. You honestly can't worry about how you look, because you'll be too focused on breathing. Everyone has to start somewhere right? The amount of sweat afterwards just makes you feel accomplished. I think you will be fine in a boot camp class an I really recommend them. But you do what you think is best for you!

but srsly, i usually just run because i want to lose weight every where on my body. i don't want to gain serious muscle yet. i want to lose weight first.

maybe cardio is best? i tried insanity and almost finished but i'm kind of tired of it now. it's a bitch lmao.

anyone ever tried p90x?

warriorholmes 19th-Feb-2013 08:24 pm (UTC)
how were the results of p90x?

and YES. plyo was such a bitch.
kissoffools 19th-Feb-2013 08:00 pm (UTC)
building muscle helps boost your metabolism and burn calories, so it's best to do a mixture of cardio and strength training if you want to lose weight! just cardio won't give you the same results.
