We live in a post-racial society, racism is over, our President is black, if black people use that word why can't she?, dont take it so seriously, you're too sensitive, etc. Did I miss anything?
Next year they should change February to Ignorant White Nonsense Month because that's what it's turning into.
the post racial thing is what i hear the most- its especially disturbing in my public health class wear we learn about health disparities and race in every class.
I'll never understand why that's supposed to make a difference. It's like when assholes think they're less asshole-ish because they say they're assholes. That just makes you a self-aware asshole, but it's still nothing but shit that comes out of your mouth. do you want a cookie? so you can talk more shit later?
I really wish the context of the word and more about racism and stereotypes was taught in public school. I really dont think people get it. I didn't. I didnt say the word, but i didnt understand why it was still said at all. I think as america becomes more diverse its really necessary. Instead, some textbook publishers are trying to take the fact that our fore fathers were hypocrites and owned slaves ( thanks texas). I had to read two texts books in APUSH, because our textbook was "too liberal" for including facts like that.
Also, the Emory University presidents remarks on the 3/5 compromise...just gross.
Yeah, I also wish we'd stop teaching American history (and all history taught in America) from a white male perspective. It took me until college to even glimpse how Native American, Spanish, and Mexican interactions led to the forming of the southwest as we know it (and thank you Arizona for making Mexican-American history illegal). I had no idea slave narratives even existed until college because up until that point all I'd learned in high school was that only the white people wrote about slavery.
I think we need to get rid of this idea that America is only now becoming more diverse. I think we've always been diverse, it's just that only recently have the voices of people of color started to gain mainstream, a.k.a. 'white', attention.
you're absolutely right about america always being diverse. Im south asian-i have a heritage that's a mix of several countries in the region- and I'm a 1st generation american so all I really knew about racism I learned in high school and since I lived in texas and in a predominantly white upper class area, I didnt really know a lot of the things discussed in ONTD posts and I made some uncalled for generalizations and asked some questions about racism against blacks and was attacked here. and while I know better now because I looked some of those things up, it would be ideal to learn these things in school. Even in college if your school doesnt have a good general education requirement program, you can really be left with out a lot of important history. I think it really hit me when after the election everyone went on and on about it not being a white america- and i think that is where your point fits in- america was never purely white.
Yeah it's a damn shame how slavery is glossed over and all these slave owners are still made out to be American heroes. I remember when I was in elementary school and we were supposed to learn about how christopher columbus "discovered" america but our teacher was out sick and instead we got this amazing rastafari substitute who went on a rant and told us that christopher was really an imperialist murderer who didnt discover shit. Then after that I didn't learn the real story until college. It's a damn shame teaching so many people such misinformation when so many people don't have the luxury of getting a higher education and learning the truth.
yup im from arizona and in my district in 11th grade we took american/arizona history. well, supposedly. the only thing i have ever learned about my own state in school was about the hohokam, hopi and anasazi tribes and that was only in elementary. its so fucking stupid, especially since all the studies and results show that mexican-american history classes and others like them actually raise scores for everyone!
I love how people think Lena is being picked on .... like why are you surprised people are raising eyebrows considering all of the racist shit she has done ?
I'm perpetually late to like 95% of ontd posts I go in lol and I'm always surprised when I click the source for these kinds of -look what someone did on Twitter!- posts and it's still there. It's happening more and more, people, at least celebs, are getting less ashamed of themselves (not that I'd think this chick would be a good example of someone where we'd find any sense of shame).
But I did always judge them for trying to hide and deleting, too, so I guess assholes just can't win. :( :(
it's the whole post-racial anti-PC movement. people are starting to feel threatened that minorities/marginalized groups are starting to gain power and have louder voices so there's this new current of people who "fight back" by losing all sense of shame.
what the hell
hmmmm lemme backtrack this post
Next year they should change February to Ignorant White Nonsense Month because that's what it's turning into.
lol at this term. i always wonder what year was it exactly when we became a post-racial society? lmao
"Ignorant White Nonsense Month because that's what it's turning into"
I thought about that too but lbr they'd be pleased because they finally have a month that's "all about them~"
