Tim Burton saw past Johnny Depp's good looks - compares him to Edward Scissorhands

Tim Burton cast Johnny Depp in 'Edward Scissorhands' in spite of his pretty boy reputation.

The filmmaker - who has worked with the Hollywood actor countless times - saw past the teen heartthrob status Johnny's '80s TV crime drama '21 Jump Street' afforded him and discovered a sensitive man pigeon-holed because of his looks, which he thought was perfect for the lead role in his iconic fantasy film.

He explained: ''It was quite simple. I mean, I knew about '21 Jump Street', and I had seen pictures and stuff, and I met him and he just reminded me of what the character was. At the time he was perceived as a teen idol, you know, a Justin Bieber type of guy, but as a person he wasn't that.

''So, for me, he mirrored what Edward Scissorhands was: he was something inside, but people treated him a certain way because of the way he looks. So in a weird way, he was the character, because he had those feelings.''

The 1990 film marked the beginning of the pair's many collaborations, and Tim says over the years he has looked to his muse for creative inspiration when it comes to penning scripts.

Quizzed about Johnny's involvement in the films, Tim added in an interview with Deadline's AwardsLine: ''It depends. Every one has been different. I'm trying to think back. With 'Ed Wood', the script was there.

''I think on 'Sweeney Todd', I just asked him, before there was a script, if he'd go for it. But usually there's a script.''

My eyes are rolling so much reading this that I suspect it looks like I'm having a stroke.

I know that pretty much everyone here dislikes Johnny and he's definitely said and done some questionable shit but Edward Scissorhands is amazing and he is so good in it.

I wish Tim Burton could go back to making films like that to be honest. I think the last thing of his that I actually loved was Big Fish.
one_hoopy_frood 18th-Feb-2013 06:50 pm (UTC)
At least it's not one of those things where his current work takes away from his past work, like it gets to be for other people. I can still really enjoy the ones I love without thinking of crap like Alice in Wonderland.

Also Frankenweenie was cute.
vehiclesshockme 18th-Feb-2013 06:51 pm (UTC)
Yeah the ones I love I still love, nothing has changed about that.

Frankenweenie was actually a good move for him I think.
mistress_f 18th-Feb-2013 06:50 pm (UTC)
the early johnny / tim collaborations were great tbh. ed wood is still my favourite burton film and it's perfect. i miss old burton, so fucking much (although frankenweenie had a lot of his old works which was so nice)
yurasama_love 18th-Feb-2013 06:57 pm (UTC)
Big Fish is my favorite Burton movie.
ponpiri 18th-Feb-2013 06:58 pm (UTC)
I loved the hell out of Sweeney Todd. That was the last one for me, although I haven't seen Frankenweenie yet.

So on the outside he was a heartthrob but on the inside he was hideous and misunderstood. I see.
agatharuncible 18th-Feb-2013 07:25 pm (UTC)
if he had a tumblr, he'd be making up labels like "transugly" (similar to the "transethnic" fiasco) and tim burton would reblog his posts and defend everything he said.

Fuck you for not letting me favorite this comment, livejournal.

Pre-Jack Sparrow, Johnny had an amazing filmography tbh.
vehiclesshockme 18th-Feb-2013 06:54 pm (UTC)
The first Pirates was pretty awesome though. They should have just let it be at that. I enjoyed Finding Neverland as well and that was post Pirates.
mistress_f 18th-Feb-2013 06:56 pm (UTC)
yeah i have no shame in saying i had so much fun when i first saw the first pirates. then they had to go and ruin it with a gazillion tired sequels. and i loved finding neverland, is that the last 'normal' role he did (with public enemies)?
ponpiri 18th-Feb-2013 06:57 pm (UTC)
Yes! Ed S., Ed Wood, Donnie Brasco, 9th Gate and Secret Window are some of my favorites. I think I'm going to marathon some of his movies this week.
mjspice 19th-Feb-2013 05:54 pm (UTC)
I'd say till Finding Neverland. It went downhill after that. :/
jennyfinnly 18th-Feb-2013 06:50 pm (UTC)
put your 20 year long erection away, tim b, we get it
vonlisbon 18th-Feb-2013 06:51 pm (UTC)
He's been doing his same schtick for so long that I'm at the point where I don't think I could appreciate Johnny Depp's looks anymore if I had to. HE'S JUST SO RELENTLESSLY EDGY AND JUST "GETS" MY DARKTWISTEDNERDY SELF~
astormatsea 18th-Feb-2013 06:54 pm (UTC)
is this a time warp post?? who cares
ponpiri 18th-Feb-2013 06:55 pm (UTC)
I miss this Johnny.
cutiepie0304 18th-Feb-2013 06:55 pm (UTC)
He was so attractive back in the day, until shortly after Pirates, tbh, but he's looking so leathery and bloated lately :/
iluvkidnappers 18th-Feb-2013 06:55 pm (UTC)
i love edward scissorhands

i also thought lana del reys 'bel air' would fit right in if it was made around that time. im thinking the snow scene
ponpiri 18th-Feb-2013 08:04 pm (UTC)
Yep. It sounds like it was composed by Elfman.
heart_iswild 18th-Feb-2013 06:55 pm (UTC)
young johnny depp was perfection

i don't think there's any ifs, ands, or buts about it tbh
rimbaudacious 18th-Feb-2013 06:59 pm (UTC)
I'm cool with the fact that if you gave Depp a colonoscopy you'd probably find Burton floating around in there, I just long for the days that their joint projects were fun.

It'd be one thing if Burton just magically turned awful, but he got lazy. The bigger sin imo.
agatharuncible 18th-Feb-2013 07:23 pm (UTC)
ia. I used to love Tim Burton but now he just comes up with lazy-ass concepts, puts a basic weird spin on it and calls it a movie.
