“Bronies:” New Documentary Looks at “My Little Pony’s” “Unexpected” Adult Fans

A new documentary released Saturday, January 19th takes a look at the worldwide explosion of a unique fandom: adult fans of the latest incarnation of the animated series, “My Little Pony.”

“Bronies: The Extremely Unexpected Adult Fans of My Little Pony,” a feature-length documentary, examines the stories behind the Bronies (bro + pony), adult fans of “My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic,” an animated series that debuted in 2010 on The Hub cable network.

From the Press Release:

"The documentary discovers that the essential story elements of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic -- Honesty, Kindness, Laughter, Generosity, Loyalty and Magic – have a universality that extends beyond age and gender and that Bronies are pushing the boundaries of what society deems appropriate in their quest for a kinder, gentler future."

Through footage recorded at some of the many conventions celebrating the series across the world and stories of individual fans, the documentary explains the love and loyalty that some adults have for an animated series primarily targeted to young girls.

“Bronies” was produced by Michael Brockoff and three members of the cast and crew of the show: Lauren Faust (series creator), John de Lancie (guest voice actor) and Tara Strong (voice actor).

Funds for the film were raised through the internet fundraising site, Kickstarter. Several times during the fundraising process, the target goal was met and surpassed, allowing the scope of the documentary to expand. It became the 5th most successful “film & video” project on the site with over 320 thousand dollars raised.

Currently, the film is only available through digital distribution channels.

These fuckers make me SO mad. All of these creepy misogynistic douchebags can fall off a cliff, as far as I'm concerned - taking something that was meant for little girls and then demanding it cater to their wants/ideas is disgusting.

THIS IS WHY WE CAN'T HAVE NICE THINGS.

angelmonster 17th-Feb-2013 04:17 pm (UTC)
Tbh that's done for almost every fandom out there, its why I hate shipping so much. This just takes it to a creepy level.
littlehayzay 17th-Feb-2013 04:20 pm (UTC)
There's a huge difference, at least for me, when it comes to a show that was specifically designed for little girls to watch with their parents being co-opted by a bunch of adult men who demand to be treated like the primary/most important (and sometimes only) fanbase of the show.

Other shows get super possessive fans, for sure, but it's not the same thing at all - this is grown men taking something away from young girls and turning it into their sexualised, creepy fantasy of what it should be.
mynamehere07 17th-Feb-2013 04:22 pm (UTC)
I don't mind mild shipping in small doses. However when a segment of fandom is ultra consumed and obsessed with their ship, to the point where they demand it be canon, I can't.
d00ditsemily 17th-Feb-2013 04:18 pm (UTC)
ikr. I just finished watching the new episode of MLP where one of the ponies becomes a princess and my daughter was so happy. It was adorable. To know these guys were so upset and angry about that pissed me off. So I googled Bronies and found this. It seems like the creators made this documentary to make Bronies happy or something. I think it will just make them feel more entitled to have things go their way on the tv show.
lanavis 17th-Feb-2013 04:28 pm (UTC)
Way to be an ASSumer.
I don't particularly give a fuck for the show, but you are assuming way too much based on male adult fans being male, adult, and fans.
Ofc, there are some misogynistic douchebags, but there are assholes in every fandom.
rewrittentime 17th-Feb-2013 05:08 pm (UTC)
same, they're so fucking gross.
kytele 17th-Feb-2013 06:33 pm (UTC)
this is my number one gripe with the series
ballion 17th-Feb-2013 07:44 pm (UTC)
I think you're confusing Bronies with Furries ... ?
angelmonster 17th-Feb-2013 04:16 pm (UTC)
$320,000.00 raised for this shit? Priorities people, give that to charity not....this!
d00ditsemily 17th-Feb-2013 04:19 pm (UTC)
ikr. Too bad this isn't going to go into the creeps that want to have sex with little girl ponies.
agatharuncible 17th-Feb-2013 05:05 pm (UTC)
omfg $320,000 for a documentary about adult men who watch my little pony? this world is lost. I get the feeling the same documentary could be made with a cheap camera and windows movie maker.

the world is lost, in b4 someone brings up sociology
fusilli_head 17th-Feb-2013 07:21 pm (UTC)
nothing makes me feel more like the world is lost than spending an hour on tumblr tbh.

I love everything this comment chooses to be.
andthenwevomit 17th-Feb-2013 04:18 pm (UTC)
LOL someone please post those creepy deviantart photos where some of these guys edited themselves and the characters together
hoechlingurl 17th-Feb-2013 04:22 pm (UTC)
Wha..??
sandstorm 17th-Feb-2013 04:23 pm (UTC)
There's one with one of the ponies looking scared in if I remember correctly people being taken to a concentration camp and THAT was the only reason a commenter felt bad. Not because of the REAL people who probably died.

littlehayzay 17th-Feb-2013 04:24 pm (UTC)
Your username will be what happens to all of us if anyone does that... the creepiest one I saw was like the pony on the bed of some asshole's basement room at his parent's house with a come hither look and then him blaming the pony for 'being too sexy he couldn't resist her'.

angelmonster 17th-Feb-2013 04:27 pm (UTC)

I can't believe they are serious with these...

320K to show the world all about these gross douchenozzle creepsters.

*yes, I know, not all fans of mlp are gross creeps, but bronies are a different breed.
sandstorm 17th-Feb-2013 04:19 pm (UTC)
have a universality that extends beyond age and gender and that Bronies are pushing the boundaries of what society deems appropriate in their quest for a kinder, gentler future

AND YET.

AND. IT. BEGINS.
agentnever 17th-Feb-2013 04:20 pm (UTC)
I really just don't get bronies. I've never watched the show, but is it really an awesome show for adults like they claim it is? I know a brony, but he's also a furry, so...
sandstorm 17th-Feb-2013 04:22 pm (UTC)
It's not a masterpiece, but it showcases different types of girls and it makes me happy. Not intended for adults, no, but there's a ton of merch like jackets and shirts for them.
d00ditsemily 17th-Feb-2013 04:27 pm (UTC)
I watch it when it's on with my daughter, and it's okay not grating but I would not watch it on my own (unlike Gravity Falls on Disney)
shh_im_a_ninja 17th-Feb-2013 06:05 pm (UTC)
Is Gravity Falls really that good? I've heard great things about it
mana_runigha 17th-Feb-2013 07:54 pm (UTC)
It's a great kids show that focuses on having strong female leads. It's just one with ponies.

Bronies are on some level furries, but bronies just happen to like a specific kind of animal.
anchors_oceans 17th-Feb-2013 04:21 pm (UTC)
i get that. everyone's tastes are different and i've heard a lot of "(show title) saved my life" or "(fictional character) saved my life." those people look like a peaceful bunch.

it's the cloppers that freak me out.
misoras 17th-Feb-2013 04:25 pm (UTC)
cloppers? i'm scared.
anchors_oceans 17th-Feb-2013 04:29 pm (UTC)
from what i've heard, bronies are straight up fans of the show and love the characters and blah blah blah and the cloppers are the ones that draw and watch pony porn. i heard that bronies were mad to be confused with cloppers because they're not sexually aroused by the show and gives them a bad name? eh i'm not digging deep into bronie research to figure it all out lol.
scarletfbl 17th-Feb-2013 04:21 pm (UTC)
They're like ghosts, or faeries, or whatever -- the more you acknowledge them, the more powerful they become. o_o
agatharuncible 17th-Feb-2013 05:13 pm (UTC)
thankfully, bronies are still alive so we don't have any ghosts that photoshop themselves with ponies... yet
m3rr13 17th-Feb-2013 05:32 pm (UTC)
Lmfao.

i was about to say ~aw that's nice but then i read the comments in here. apparently this video is deceptive?
d00ditsemily 17th-Feb-2013 04:24 pm (UTC)
Well it's made to cater to Bronies so it's going to be nice and not expose their creepiness.
mynamehere07 17th-Feb-2013 04:26 pm (UTC)
I didn't watch the video, but there is a segment of bronies that are gross pigs. Making sexually explicit fan art depicting scenes of abuse and rape (oops, sorry, they call it noncon). Even thinking that they are some "oppressed group" because they are grown men who like a kid's show aimed at girls.
bluecupxxx 17th-Feb-2013 04:53 pm (UTC)
I love the reclassification of rape as "noncon" even when involved in the HP fandom I could never understand how someone could think it changed anything.
ashtraysoul 17th-Feb-2013 06:48 pm (UTC)
isn't that every fandom though? edit because the rest of post educated me lol

mte. "They're not all like that tho!!!"

...yes. they are.
aquanite 17th-Feb-2013 09:31 pm (UTC)
they truly are. It's so disgusting and there's no excuse for it. They're men and need to seriously grow up. There's no problem with liking cartoons but... it's my little pony, come the fuck on.
existential 17th-Feb-2013 06:45 pm (UTC)
i've only encountered bronies on the internet, but i have no doubt that they're all gross as fuck
