No actually, they're not the same. It's not a secret that Miley has had her teeth messed with for years.

i'm p sure miley has mentioned her dental work b4
gjee 17th-Feb-2013 04:53 am (UTC)
she's mentioned before how excited she was to get work on her gums. her mouth has gone through at least 2 changes imo
sprocket1224 17th-Feb-2013 04:55 am (UTC)
She's had lingual braces.

ONTD PLEASE GIVE ME YOUR TEETH WHITENING TIPS!

Edited at 2013-02-17 03:32 am (UTC)
vanishingbee 17th-Feb-2013 03:34 am (UTC)
I asked my dentist about whitening strips and enamel, he said it was fine if it was just occasional
astormatsea 17th-Feb-2013 03:34 am (UTC)
the crest strips are good..i bought the advanced professionals ones recently tho and i put them on for about 45 mins and started reading reviews (idk why i didnt before i purchased them tbh) and i was freaking out. everyone said the sensitivity and pain was ridic i immediately took them off and didn't use the rest lol

long story short get the regular ones that you wear like half an hour..those worked best for me when i got my braces off
_underwhelmed 17th-Feb-2013 04:48 am (UTC)
there is def a lot of sensitivity caused by them (but i think that comes with most whitening solutions) but i use a toothpaste for sensitive teeth when i whiten and it solves that problem
wearescientists 17th-Feb-2013 05:22 am (UTC)
omg i used to eat that goop when i was younger
ichthyosaur 17th-Feb-2013 03:34 am (UTC)
that's funny, braces put me off corn - I'll eat it, but I'm not fond of it now.

whitening mouthwash works well for me.
cherriesjubilei 17th-Feb-2013 03:35 am (UTC)
swish hydrogen peroxide. That's like the active ingredient in whitening mouth washes I think. Also I think brushing with baking soda every once and a while.
filmfreakfranco 17th-Feb-2013 03:35 am (UTC)
they work and give long lasting results if you brush as you are supposed to

angeepang 17th-Feb-2013 03:35 am (UTC)
I heard if you rub a banana peel over them it whitens your teeth. Also, hydrogen peroxide recipes are all over pinterest.
iciegurl89 17th-Feb-2013 03:36 am (UTC)
I think the common sense ones are flossing, brushing twice per day. Stay away from soda, coffee, smoking, acidic foods.

According to what I learned in dental hygiene school, take home kits from dentist offices are best. Be sure you use toothpaste for sensitivity (sensodyne, for example). If not you can have "zingers" and man do they hurt!

To give a whiter appearance, the darker the skin, the whiter the teeth (not promoting tanning but as far as makeup or just natural skin tone it can help it). Also the color lipstick you use is very important, assuming that you are a woman.

I bet people have some better ones than me.
goddamnbats 17th-Feb-2013 03:36 am (UTC)
i use plus white 5 minute speed whitening gel. it works but your teeth are really weak/sensitive afterwards. like it hurts to breath in cold air when i'm outside sometimes :\
riookierin 17th-Feb-2013 03:38 am (UTC)
Arm & Hammer w/ baking soda. I swear, I've been using that for years, and my dentist loves me.
aaameeting All you need17th-Feb-2013 03:49 am (UTC)

joinmymisery 17th-Feb-2013 03:52 am (UTC)
I've been using the finishing touch smile pen and I've seen results and I've only used it since Tuesday. I only use it twice though, even though they said you can use it up to 4 times, so maybe if you use it that much the results will come quicker.
itsintobethin 17th-Feb-2013 04:13 am (UTC)
arm and hammer whitening gel!
shining_starsxx 17th-Feb-2013 04:15 am (UTC)
Try to drink dark liquids with a straw.
oddbunny_dreams 17th-Feb-2013 04:26 am (UTC)
If you have those funny white splotches left over from braces try MI Paste (it's only available at the dental office, not in stores). It uses calcium and phosphorous to remineralize your teeth; so overall it serves as a whitening agent, desensitizer, and smooths out overall tooth colour.

That being said, whenever I bleach my teeth (I use whitening gel in custom made trays), I ALWAYS use MI Paste afterwards. It helps to not make my teeth so sensitive and adds an extra boost of white.
behindthe_scene 17th-Feb-2013 05:20 am (UTC)
My dentist told me the only over the counter whitening product he recommends is Crest White Strips. He said to brush your teeth for a week with toothpaste like Sensodyne before using them. I used the advanced white strips and totally noticed a difference. I did the prep the week before and brushed with Sensodyne while doing the strips and didn't have any pain/sensitivity.
lushieaciid 17th-Feb-2013 06:25 am (UTC)
dental hygiene student here...
crest white strips premium or professional work well over time...(AFTER A GOOD CLEANING)

however, ZOOM whitening @ dentists really does work like FAST but it's expensive. $500ish but way worth it. i got to do it on a patient a few months ago and she left with the whitest teeth i've ever seen.
malocudoviste 17th-Feb-2013 07:52 am (UTC)
baking soda lol

I wore removable braces for four years ,regular braces for two and it's been three years and I'm still wearing my retainer (every third night tho). I know how you feel lol

also nowadays I always cut/tear my food into pieces, almost never bite it off because of braces,I can't kick the habit
yehyijun 17th-Feb-2013 09:22 am (UTC)
I use a whitening toothpaste (rn it's Crest 3D White or whatever it's called) and Arm & Hammer Whitening Booster. Works pretty well for cheap. :)
_folieadeux 17th-Feb-2013 02:04 pm (UTC)
I get compliments on my white teeth all the time.

I use a Phillips sonicare toothbrush. It's so amazing, it really helps whitening your teeth because it's so effective. It feels like going to the dentist for a teeth cleaning every time you brush them.

I use crest whitestrips (the original) very occasionally. Like maybe 1 time per year, just for kind of a boost.

I rinse out my mouth or brush my teeth each and every time I have something potentially staining, like tea or coffee or hot chocolate. I think this makes such a huuuuuge difference. I started doing it when I first used whitestrips because I was like, um, if I have tea today won't that erase all the good I'm doing? So it basically became a habit and I do it all the time now.

/tldr
cukoo4cocopuffs 17th-Feb-2013 04:00 pm (UTC)
My dentist told me when I was like 11 that I had naturally yellow teeth. Ugh. I tried the Crest strips and they actually made my teeth super sensitive. It is such a pain in the ass and I'm so embarrassed.

Never had braces, or cavities, and very little plaque buildup when I go for a cleaning (even if I missed a year due to no insurance) and YET still yellow. Boo!
ohkimosabe 17th-Feb-2013 05:10 pm (UTC)
put hydrogen peroxide on a q-tip rub it on your teeth and leave it on for 30 seconds, then rinse.
sixdemonhag 18th-Feb-2013 05:21 am (UTC)
Apparently activated charcoal is pretty awesome for whitening teeth, also Google "oil pulling".

josiefier 17th-Feb-2013 03:32 am (UTC)
I've got an Anna Paquin-esque gap that I've never been able to get fixed.
vanishingbee 17th-Feb-2013 03:35 am (UTC)
Why couldn't you get it fixed? I had one and they had to cut out a bit of flesh but they closed it.
josiefier 17th-Feb-2013 03:37 am (UTC)
We only really had the money for it when I was 14-ish (since I guess whatever insurance we had - when we had it - wouldn't cover it), and my mother still said no. I don't know why.
aaameeting 17th-Feb-2013 03:54 am (UTC)
I had a gap. I ended up getting cosmetic teeth bonding. Where they put a mold over your teeth and close it up.
ialmrnt5 17th-Feb-2013 03:39 am (UTC)
gaps are qt most of the time tho

i had one from like kindergarten till high school when my wisdom teeth came in
burn_a_miracle 17th-Feb-2013 03:40 am (UTC)
I love her gap. I had a gap and an overbite and I got the gap closed with braces. Still have the overbite, but I embraced it.
raccoonwounds 17th-Feb-2013 03:55 am (UTC)
Me too, except there gaps all around the front of my top row. I never wanted braces but I have bonding around my teeth to close the gaps. Look pretty good but they chip every couple years and I have to get them touched up.
gangsterdorothy 17th-Feb-2013 03:57 am (UTC)
My sister had a gap and she fixed it with bonding I believe.
thesegoto11 17th-Feb-2013 04:44 am (UTC)
gaps are so qt imo

I was so bummed when I saw pattie boyd had hers fixed
romp 17th-Feb-2013 05:50 am (UTC)
I think they look great. They were a beauty standard in the Middle Ages, yeah?
mynamehere07 17th-Feb-2013 08:08 am (UTC)
Same here. I could have gotten braces, but the insurance wouldn't cover it since it was cosmetic.
ayaneva 17th-Feb-2013 08:09 am (UTC)
I've got a gap but it runs in my family on my dad's side so I've grown attached to it. I'll never get it fixed. I have one, as do both of my older sisters, my dad, all of my aunts and uncles on my dad's side, and most of my cousins (one did get hers fixed though- we all thought she was odd for doing it. lol). It's basically the only way you can tell my sisters and I are related because we somehow look nothing alike.

My mom always complains about feeling left out because she doesn't have a gap.

I don't know if this is actually statistically true or not but it seems like gaps are pretty common in Black families (such as mine) and less so in families of other races. I always found that interesting.
amontillado 17th-Feb-2013 10:35 am (UTC)
I've got an overbite that wasn't taken care of when I was a kid, and a gap. I want to do something about the overbite, but the gap doesn't bother me. It's pretty small, and I lucked out, because my dad had a gap you could drive a truck through before he got it closed.
crucified 17th-Feb-2013 03:32 am (UTC)
My teeth are really crooked but I've never cared enough to get braces. Fuck that shit.
raised_eyebrows 17th-Feb-2013 03:37 am (UTC)
Can't say I blame you. They hurt, they're expensive, and then when you finally get them off, you're damned to an eternity of wearing a retainer.

But people are so weird about teeth. I rarely notice unless they're super jacked up. That said, I'm self-conscious about the crowding in my lower row.
thecanuckian 17th-Feb-2013 05:49 am (UTC)
i had braces and i never have worn a retainer

and i have better than perfect teeth ^.^
angelrose493 17th-Feb-2013 06:55 am (UTC)
i never really wore my retainer, but my teeth stayed the same. which is kind of a shame because i kinda miss my gap :( but i also have like 6 missing teeth, so there were other reasons for braces.
invisible_cunt 17th-Feb-2013 04:31 pm (UTC)
i haven't worn my retainer in a couple years and haven't noticed any visible shifting
it's just so custy after 10 years of having it and i want to get a new clean one because i feel like no matter how much i soak it in listerine and denture cleaner, i don't want to put it in my mouth again
nasstasja_sk 17th-Feb-2013 10:59 pm (UTC)
Had braces on for 4 years, got them off, wore a retainer for 2 more. Stopped wearing it and my teeth immediately started shifting. That was 4 years ago. I still have to wear the retainer. Ugh.
caketime 17th-Feb-2013 11:27 am (UTC)
i don't even have really crooked teeth, but idg the whole straight, white teeth obsession. i had this wonderful old-school dentist who thought this obsession was crap as well, but he retired. >:(
cherriesjubilei 17th-Feb-2013 03:33 am (UTC)
You know what's fun? When you're getting a filling and the Novocaine wears off.
cressesgirl 17th-Feb-2013 03:34 am (UTC)
That literally happened to me on Tuesday. I ended up having to get 4 shots in the same place to fully numb me
romp 17th-Feb-2013 06:08 am (UTC)
Just went through that. Apparently it's sometimes a facial nerve causing the problem rather than a dental one.
missbrianne 17th-Feb-2013 11:50 pm (UTC)
I've had 11 shots for one filling before. My dentist won't do fillings without being numb. I couldn't chew on that side of my mouth for months due to the pain, swelling, bruising afterwards.
wildelight 17th-Feb-2013 03:35 am (UTC)
novacaine's useless for me whenever i've gotten fillings, the sensitivity is unbearable
superdogbiter 17th-Feb-2013 03:39 am (UTC)

it just feels all sorts of wrong

am0r_fati 17th-Feb-2013 04:35 am (UTC)
get laughing gas. last time i went, they gave me extra numbing + laughing gas and i had the time of my life.
fuckmyass 17th-Feb-2013 04:49 am (UTC)
pfffff, I always had the numbing cream, nocovaine, and nitrous for everything. Had lots of teeth pulled when I was younger and cavities. I was naughty and always told them I couldn't feel the nitrous very well so they'd keep turning it up, one time it was so high that I was seeing glow in the dark and the dentist's voice was super low and slow. I looovvveeedd it but that was probably dangerous as hell.
_underwhelmed 17th-Feb-2013 04:53 am (UTC)
i have never had a cavity and comments like this are what put the fear of god in me and make me get out of bed and floss
squirrelsarerad 17th-Feb-2013 05:51 am (UTC)
I've had 2 fillings and the dentist didn't give me any novacaine either time. Admittedly, they were small, but still. YES I CAN FEEL YOU DRILLING INTO MY TOOTH AND NO IT DOESNT FEEL THAT GOOD.

schmanda 17th-Feb-2013 06:12 am (UTC)
Even more fun is realizing the numbness has started to go during a wisdom tooth extraction.

Between that and the crunching and the pulling, I begged Jesus to take all the wheels.
lushieaciid 17th-Feb-2013 06:28 am (UTC)
they don't use novocaine anymore but yeah. make sure they put a lot more topical on before the next injection if it wears off.
bluekrinkle 17th-Feb-2013 08:02 am (UTC)
For my first ever filling, the dentist (he was 200 years old), told me it would be more painful to have the shot than it would be to have the filling. I took his word, freaking out, and had the filling without Novocaine.
I was crying during the filling. His response? "oh, don't be a baby!". I never went back to him.
aprilbegins 17th-Feb-2013 07:47 pm (UTC)
what really makes me die getting a filling is the SMELL of the drilling, makes me want to die every time

Were u born with perfect teeth, ONTD?

I wish.

Also, my medicine makes it so my gums are messed up and no matter how often I brush, occasionally they will bleed. :/
autumn1234 17th-Feb-2013 03:36 am (UTC)
I fucking wish. I've never met anyone who had/has teeth like I did before braces. My front teeth were literally moving outwards, like when I rested my mouth it was just open.

And people wonder why 8 years later I still wear my retainers weekly.
bitch_whatusay 17th-Feb-2013 03:42 am (UTC)
people tell me i have perfect teeth,
and i've never had braces...so, yeah i guess haha
my mom said it was cuz my dentist growing up was progressive and would shave down my teeth so they had room to grow in? idk
i also get asked a lot if i whiten my teeth, which i never have actually;/

runandtelldat 17th-Feb-2013 04:27 am (UTC)
People think my mom has dentures, but her teefs are just flawless. My dentist once said I have a gorgeous set of teeth while he was cleaning them. They're pretty straight, but I have an overbite.
la_geni 17th-Feb-2013 04:52 am (UTC)
My Mom. I have the same shape of teeth and my dentist always tells me that I have such nice teeth and that I should get my bottom row fixed. I'm too poor to get them straightened.
darkanddusty 17th-Feb-2013 05:57 am (UTC)
Neither my mom nor I have ever had a cavity, and my mom swears it's because her mom (my grandma) took calcium during all of her pregnancies, before it was a ~thing. idk if that's remotely factual, but I appreciate it if it was.

That said... my teeth were fuuuuuuuuucked before I had braces.
mmbien 17th-Feb-2013 10:39 am (UTC)
yes. and i'm english.
sixdemonhag 18th-Feb-2013 05:24 am (UTC)

Iirc, she broke her teeth. But idk, I read about it years ago.
janacjb 17th-Feb-2013 03:33 am (UTC)
My teeth are straight so I never needed braces. I used to beg my dentist for them. I totally feel like I missed out.
one_hoopy_frood 17th-Feb-2013 03:35 am (UTC)
In elementary and middle school there was this girl who always told me she wished she had glasses, she wished she had my (messy) handwriting, she really really wanted braces. Even though she was my friend I hated her for it hahaha.
janacjb 17th-Feb-2013 03:41 am (UTC)
Haha, I might have been that person... In like 4th grade everyone around me was getting their braces or glasses, I was hella jealous. I decided I was going to purposely fail whatever the next test the school nurse did so I wouldn't be left behind again. Unfortunately for me, it was a hearing test :/
autumn1234 17th-Feb-2013 03:53 am (UTC)
I had a friend who wanted glasses so bad that she stole someones and wore them until she needed glasses -____-
malocudoviste 17th-Feb-2013 07:58 am (UTC)

This is me! I've always wanted braces, but now I'm too old to get them.
ekrelly 17th-Feb-2013 03:56 am (UTC)
trust me, you didn't miss out. the second i left my orthodontist's office after getting my braces on, a bracket popped off when I was in the damn elevator but I had to come back the next day to get it fixed since he had just closed. brackets popping off was a regular occurrence and getting my braces tightened was not fun.
gpin2084 17th-Feb-2013 03:59 am (UTC)
omg, same here. I begged my dentist many, many times and he always looked at me like I was nuts. The oral surgeon who removed wisdom teeth asked me if I've had braces bc my teeth look like I had them apparently. Suppose that was some sort of compliment. I'm still bitter.
ichdontthinksoo 17th-Feb-2013 04:12 am (UTC)

squirrelsarerad 17th-Feb-2013 05:53 am (UTC)
I always felt that way about glasses. I'd leave the yearly eye checkups at school disappointed with my 20/20 vision. I wanted those glasses, dammit

I had braces for 3 years, also headgear I had to wear at night. I was so so so self-conscious about my teeth and used to be made fun of about them a lot because I had a big gap between my front teeth, so getting rid of that insecurity is something I'm really thankful for.
autumn1234 17th-Feb-2013 03:55 am (UTC)

Damn, that old ass Hilary Duff picture.

Honestly, I hate the blindingly white teeth trend. And I really hate those white strips commercials where they have someone with super white teeth complaining about how their teeth aren't white enough.

I had braces and my teeth are fine but I still don't like open-mouth smiling just because it looks ugly.

I don't like open-mouth smiling on me because it looks so insincere.

I never used to open-mouth smile because I was always insecure that I had a Jokeresque smile, but found out I look better showing teeth because I just look so uncomfortable fake-smiley with my mouth closed.

The blinding white thing reminded meow when I was watching Django and being so distracted by how white and perfect everyone's teeth were, even when they were dressed in rags.

I think "perfect teeth" are extremely overrated anyway. I had braces and now that my teeth are relatively straight, there's really nothing else I would do to change them. They're not really white, I do have a chipped tooth, etc, but I think imperfections are charming.

I feel self-conscious about open-mouthed smiling because my teeth are pretty huge... /:
