Pope Benedict XVI Resignation: Celebrities React on Twitter

Pope Benedict XVI sent shockwaves throughout the Roman Catholic Church—and the global faith community at large—after announcing today that he would be resigning as pontiff on Feb. 28 due to health reasons, the first pope to step down since 1415.

The 85-year-old's stunning decision—mitigated in large part by what he said was his deteriorating health and inability to fulfill the leadership tasks demanded of him—has fired up the Twitterverse, as celebs weigh in on the pontiff's momentous, controversial decision.

Here's what they had to say:

So if I'm reading this right, the next pope will, directly or indirectly, destroy Rome?
alacrities 12th-Feb-2013 05:05 am (UTC)

You Catholics can do better. I'm sure there is worse, but y'all can do better too.

I never liked the man but he claimed he never wanted to be pope so maybe he's just sick? it'll be 20-50 years before we know if there was a scandal.
mistress_f 11th-Feb-2013 11:17 pm (UTC)
boy, facebook has been on fire today. most of the funny ones are in italian so i can't share them here, so here's a very random one

maybe if he were pope I'd be religious, I felt so dirty watching that movie but he's so hot
georgie_georgie 11th-Feb-2013 11:25 pm (UTC)
is this form that Raven movie or whatever? I remember watching it when I was a kid and I thought it was a creepy love story but many adult women thought it was ~so romantic~
soavantgarde 11th-Feb-2013 11:31 pm (UTC)
lol I think it's from angels and demons

that's what role I had in mind when I saw this post, anyway
jjj 11th-Feb-2013 11:27 pm (UTC)

megalixer 12th-Feb-2013 12:01 am (UTC)

Not a real fan of the Pope but having one that fights back against our right wing would be nice. I find it sickening that our RW worships the Pope when it comes what he says about sex before marriage, birth control, abortion, being gay, etc. but totally ignore him when he speaks about war and violence. When POTUS came out with his gun control plans a few weeks ago, he was was praised by the Pope and of course, you didn't hear anything about that from RW.

keyko101 11th-Feb-2013 11:22 pm (UTC)
all i'm saying is that this pope is lying about old age being the reason behind him leaving

last pope was one leg in the grave, decrepit and shit and still did work. same with the previous ones too
kaiserschmarrn 11th-Feb-2013 11:28 pm (UTC)
Benedict XVI was there to witness John Paul II's decline first-hand and found it inhumane. He's also said before in interviews that if the pope can't do his work anymore because of health issues then it's not only his right but maybe even his duty to step back. I'm not saying that there's not more to the story but the health of the pope has been getting progressively worse to the point where they've had to move up masses for him and let him take a ride on Palm Sunday instead of walking as has been the tradition since forever as well.
kajsa87 12th-Feb-2013 12:08 am (UTC)
I can't believe that people think it's better to be half-dead and still be pope instead of spending the rest of your life in dignity. I'd like to know if John Paul II actually chose that for himself...?
vonlisbon 12th-Feb-2013 12:15 am (UTC)
tbh the part that puzzles me the most is that this Pope is like "I'm too sick to work, ergo, I resign" and the rest were apparently like "I'm too sick to work, here, choose an underling for twenty years until I die!" Like wat.
kaiserschmarrn 11th-Feb-2013 11:22 pm (UTC)
I see people are still calling him the "nazi pope". I guess there really is no other nickname for Germans.
serenachan 11th-Feb-2013 11:28 pm (UTC)
I hate him with all my fucking heart but people who call him a Nazi are stupid.
I guess history is hard and using a catchy nickname is easier than understanding what being under a regime means.
grammaire 11th-Feb-2013 11:44 pm (UTC)
I agree.
kaiserschmarrn 11th-Feb-2013 11:44 pm (UTC)
It's not even about understanding about the intricate inner workings of Hitler's regime imo. It's just that the inflationary use of "nazi" (robbed of its original meaning) devalues the word. I guess it would be enough for people to know that something like the NSDAP existed and that no, not every German was a member although most Germans followed Hitler but even then, Ratzinger never subscribed to that ideology. Whatever, it just shows that people are ignorant when it suits them and "nazi" has become such a flippant blanket insult anyway that it's difficult to take serious anymore and that's the worst part.
hazel_belle 11th-Feb-2013 11:31 pm (UTC)
I called him the Twinkle Toes Pope because of the snazzy red leather shoes
sadisticsidhe 11th-Feb-2013 11:44 pm (UTC)
This. I get why people don't like the guy but to call him a Nazi really pisses me off. Of all the shit he's done, you blame him for the one thing he really didn't have any control over?
algore_galore 11th-Feb-2013 11:56 pm (UTC)
he was listed as being a member of hitler youth though, but they also say he never went to meetings
megalixer 12th-Feb-2013 12:06 am (UTC)
as far as the lazy pot shots at this one go I always did prefer Pope Palpatine :P
hocus_pocus 11th-Feb-2013 11:23 pm (UTC)
imo Rowan Williams should be Pope

he's not even Catholic but whatever
generalstolas 11th-Feb-2013 11:31 pm (UTC)

generalstolas 11th-Feb-2013 11:34 pm (UTC)
My friend texted me, "the pope is giving up being the pope for lent? That makes giving up chocolate look super weak!"
idk if she saw it on facebook/tumblr/twitter/crystal ball but I loled.
daisyazul 11th-Feb-2013 11:35 pm (UTC)
I'm catholic (a liberal one) and I didn't even know Popes could resign.

Has there ever been an american pope? (And by 'american' I mean the continent, not the United States) or somewhere not from Europe?

I wish religion didn't exist. Everyone around me judge me hard for not believing in this smh.
sadisticsidhe 11th-Feb-2013 11:44 pm (UTC)
No.
amarettosunset 11th-Feb-2013 11:45 pm (UTC)
Nope.
hazel_belle 11th-Feb-2013 11:47 pm (UTC)
Nope, never. Most popes elected were from Rome, or resided in the Holy Roman Empire, and later on outside of the sphere of HRE influence
megalixer 12th-Feb-2013 12:13 am (UTC)
Up until JPII they hadn't even had a non-Italian pope (well, ethnic Italian/native Italian speaker) in hundreds of years, lol
xcherryblossomx 12th-Feb-2013 02:16 am (UTC)
LMAO (And by 'american' I mean the continent, not the United States)
