The 80s fashions of Cold War Soviet spies

In FX’s newest series The Americans premieres tonight) *(OP note: it does not, but you should catch up with the two episodes that have aired)*, two undercover KGB agents pose as a married couple living in suburban Virginia in 1981. Costume designer Jenny Gering talks t TIME about shopping vintage, drawing costume inspiration from Playboy and why early 1980s fashion is underrated.

What attracted you to the show? The fact that it was set in 1981. I knew most people would be expecting the high 80s look—bright neons, shiny materials—but the aesthetic of 1981 is a late 70s vibe: earth shoes and that kind of look. Because you have so many influences—from The New Romantics look from the U.K. to the conservative influence from the new [Reagan] administration—there’s a lot to play with.

What was the aesthetic of 1981? A warmer, more autumnal look. Corduroys and velvets and chenille and a lot of knits. The early 80s are so under appreciated! It was such a beautiful, tailored, sensual time in fashion because the fabrics were so rich and it was a much more accessible time than people think. We’re out of the big flairs, shoulder pads and all the stuff people think of the 80s. It was very much about fit.

It’s also important to remember the show is not set in the East Village—it’s suburban Virginia and Washington D.C. so you see a lot of fashion influence, but it’s trickled down.

Where did you look for inspiration? My crew and I have hit every vintage store from Brooklyn to Albany, N.Y.. We’ve gotten things, we’ve made things, we’ve copied things we love with fabrics we’re interested in. I’ve been conscientious to mainly use vintage, but we’ve had to take some liberties. When I first heard the job I went to my high school year book. I was 13 in 1981 so I just pored over them to make sure what I pictured was right on. From there, I went to looking at old catalogues, old magazines—you can’t imagine how helpfu Playboy as. Because ironically there were a lot of fashion spreads, and the ads themselves were so helpful.

Tell us about dressing Elizabeth (played by Keri Russell). Elizabeth is the classic hot mom. She has classic tastes, but she’s young and fun and hip. So she’s wearing beautiful high-wasted jeans tucked into high-heeled boots. She does a lot of blazers, sexy silk blouses paired with jeans. I was very much inspired by Charlotte Rampling and these cool, sexy women of the 70s.

Does the fact that they’re undercover agents add an extra layer to the way you dress them? I think if anything they’re trying to not call attention to themselves. They’re so indoctrinated into being American at this point that it’s second nature. Even though it’s a false identity, it’s a false character. So I don’t think they’re being extra conservative or American.

Here's an excuse to talk about this show.  Who's watching it and what do you all think so far? Personally, I think it's great (but I live and breathe for this Cold War stuff) and I've been pleasantly surprised by Keri Russel.

I love this show so much. My brother and I are both really impressed with how taut it is and how well it is acted. I hope they don't fuck it up.
liberateourtime 7th-Feb-2013 09:29 pm (UTC)
any actual russians here wanna deliver a verdict on the ~accents~ (i assume that they are awful)
evett 7th-Feb-2013 10:02 pm (UTC)
They don't use russian accents.

Though in 1960 Keri's character has a russian accent then by 1962 when she meets her soon to be husband she speaks perfect english. You really have to ignore this because there is just no fucking way this is possible to do in real life. I know people who have lived in america for nearly 40 years and STILL have somewhat of a russian accent.
holypotatoes1 7th-Feb-2013 10:07 pm (UTC)
But are those said people purposely trying to act like the every day born and bred American? I mean you can't really compare an undercover agent whose entire job involves making them fit seamlessly into their environment versus an immigrant who has assimilated.
stoicana 7th-Feb-2013 10:07 pm (UTC)
But THAT'S an accent to a degree as well. She's just learnt how to affect an American accent much as actors learn (with the help of dialogue coaches) to speak with other foreign accents.

I know people who have lived in america for nearly 40 years and STILL have somewhat of a russian accent.

We're talking KGB officers though. Immigrants don't have the same incentive to lose their accents as KGB spies.
miakun 8th-Feb-2013 01:20 am (UTC)
Yeah, I think people don't understand that it's not something you can learn at a point. If you haven't developed the skills in your soft pallet before it's finished developing you are not going to be able to do a flawless "whatever" accent.
redleigh86 8th-Feb-2013 03:37 am (UTC)
Well how old is her character meant to be at that time? Because I went to school with a lot of immigrants and of course those who moved here in elementary school lost theirs quickly but even the people I knew in high school and college, from Poland, Germany, Romania, Belarus, Ukraine, and more lost their native accents within a few years.
michelleantonia 8th-Feb-2013 10:54 am (UTC)
truth

My parents have been here for 30+ years and my mom has the thickest accent still, my dad's is a lot less, but there's no way he'd ever be able to sound like me, no matter how hard he tried.
michelleantonia 8th-Feb-2013 10:53 am (UTC)
And the only guy who's supposed to be speaking with a Russian accent (their boss), is a Polish actor with the absolute MOST classic and clear Polish accent anyone could possibly have. I'm Polish, first-gen American, grew up with my parents speaking English with a thick Polish accent, I can hear it from a mile away. But I suppose I'm the only American who can detect a difference between a Polish and Russian accent...
laurshel 7th-Feb-2013 09:32 pm (UTC)
I love that jacket Keri is wearing.

I really really like this so far. But the husband/Phillip seems half apathetic about the whole spy thing and then half really into it that it's confusing.
stoicana 7th-Feb-2013 09:42 pm (UTC)
I think the flashback scene to when he first meets Elizabeth is very telling. Not only do we have the little tidbit with him gazing at then ripping up a picture of a woman, but there was also the fact that he didn't speak in Russian-accented English like Elizabeth.

It could have been that he'd lost the accent already or it could have been something else (maybe he's not Russian?).

And, I don't know, his whole demeanor in that scene was odd.

Plus, I wonder why Elizabeth had to say "we were poor like you" before they ate the caviar. Maybe he wasn't actually poor. Maybe he wasn't the typical KGB cadet.

That scene threw me. I assumed it was the writers fucking up because he would have known she had never tasted such expensive caviar. no normal person in the ussr would have access to such a thing unless she knew someone very very important or it was stolen/bought on the black market. which I guess you could say was then a valid question but still. it was odd.
bellyroomfan 7th-Feb-2013 09:43 pm (UTC)
i think he is just trying to do whats best for his family so if that means spying on the americans, okay! he's down. but if that means turning traitor to his country, he is also hft!
michelleantonia 8th-Feb-2013 10:55 am (UTC)
I think that's what makes it so great. They're both so clearly confused about how to feel about their job now, and about eachother. A+
nicolesnitchie 7th-Feb-2013 09:34 pm (UTC)
i need to watch this show. fx has the pilot up on their website.
metalheavy 7th-Feb-2013 09:39 pm (UTC)
I haven't seen episode two yet, but the bodysuits in the pilot were so embarrassing, yet so accurate because I remember my mom wearing them with her high waisted jeans.
carminaburana 8th-Feb-2013 02:19 am (UTC)
Really? Because i don't remember bodysuits being a big thing until 1986-1987 or so and then through the very early 90s.
michelleantonia 8th-Feb-2013 10:57 am (UTC)
LOL there's a legion of hipsters out there, scouring Urban Outfitters and Nasty Gal for that shit. It's 'on trend' and not embarrassing to them. But IA.. anyone who can actually remember when that shit was worn without irony or trend thinks it's embarrassing.. BECAUSE IT IS. (I'm over 30, ngl rn lol)

bellyroomfan 7th-Feb-2013 09:41 pm (UTC)
i've only seen the pilot so far but i have to say, this is the first new show this 2012/2013 season to impress me. it had great suspense, intriguing plot, and interesting characters. i can't wait to see more.
stoicana 7th-Feb-2013 09:44 pm (UTC)
It's really great so far. I don't know who to love more at this point, Keri Russel or Matthew Rhys. He was pretty fucking fantastic in the last episode.
bellyroomfan 7th-Feb-2013 09:48 pm (UTC)
the whole cast is phenomenal! i love all this great talent ending up in tv where they can really emerse themselves in characters and have lots of plot development. i hope they can just keep up the level of the show through several seasons.

Damn Felicity looks busted as hell in that photo. The jacket is fab, though.
michelleantonia 8th-Feb-2013 10:58 am (UTC)
rly!? I think she looks stellar and like she hasn't aged in the past decade
gonerilandregan 7th-Feb-2013 09:43 pm (UTC)
Just finished the first episode... not bad. Keri Russell is amazing... I've always liked her since Malibu Shores. <3
michelleantonia 8th-Feb-2013 10:59 am (UTC)
haha OMG another person who remembers that show! I was pissed when it got canned. Charimsa Carpenter as the bitchy track star nemesis LOL gold!
advo 7th-Feb-2013 09:52 pm (UTC)
Only watched the pilot so far, but really love it.
weruintooeasy 7th-Feb-2013 09:55 pm (UTC)
i really enjoy it so far and the leads are great. i'm especially happy to see matthew rhys be a lead in something since i always thought he was one of the best things in brothers and sisters. his american accent is really solid too.
nebulous_mirage 7th-Feb-2013 09:57 pm (UTC)
Love it!
fear_toxin 7th-Feb-2013 09:58 pm (UTC)
Is it ondemand yet?

Mine sucks. I feel it never updates shows like everyone else's.
persephonefive 8th-Feb-2013 02:11 am (UTC)
who do you have? my on demand never updates and its so annoying
fear_toxin 8th-Feb-2013 01:22 pm (UTC)
I'm held hostage by Comcast/Xfinity (bc of hockey).

My friends that live like 5 minutes away are always up to speed with their ondemand episodes.

michelleantonia 8th-Feb-2013 11:00 am (UTC)
Do you have xfinity/comcast? Because it takes aaaaages for them to put up FX shows. If there's a listing for it, the pilot should be up by now, but the second ep.. you'll be waiting till next week most likely
ms_geekette 8th-Feb-2013 05:32 pm (UTC)
The first two eps of The Americans are on the FX website and Hulu if Comcast doesn't have it yet and you don't mind watching it online.
jdgrl47 7th-Feb-2013 10:05 pm (UTC)
I know precisely nothing about this show but holy balls, I want that jacket.
stoicana 7th-Feb-2013 10:09 pm (UTC)
It's a pretty fucking fantastic jacket. I want it so badly too.
kmm122 8th-Feb-2013 04:26 am (UTC)
im pretty sure it's this one: http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/urban/catalog/productdetail.jsp?id=25032384&parentid=W_OUTERWEAR&color=004#BVRRWidgetID

but it looks like the green is sold out
jandjsalmon 7th-Feb-2013 10:17 pm (UTC)
I'm really, really enjoying it. I'm a tad worried because of the ratings drop from the first episode - but I 'm hoping that if FX gives it a fair shake it's going to be a keeper.
lozzy 8th-Feb-2013 11:01 pm (UTC)
Oh, I was wondering how it was doing in the ratings! I'm loving it, and I didn't expect to. Was it a big drop or not too bad?
jandjsalmon 10th-Feb-2013 12:37 am (UTC)
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/tv-ratings-fxs-americans-suffers-419320

It was a fairly substantial drop - but apparently that's typical. It was just a bit more dramatic than normal I think.

I'm loving it too. The actors have seriously impressed me.
