'The Taste' recap: Comfort food heats up

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Viewers finally got a taste of "The Taste" when judges Nigella Lawson, Ludo Lefebvre, Anthony Bourdain and Brian Malarkey joined their teams in the kitchen. It was definitely more action-packed than the initial auditions but there were some fundamental ingredients still lacking.

For one, the show's format is confusing. To start, each team member makes a spoonful. The teams then decide on one spoonful to represent the team to be sent to a guest judge. On Tuesday's episode, the theme was comfort food and the guest judge was Gabrielle Hamilton of Prune in New York. Hamilton then chose one spoon as the best, giving the person that made that spoonful immunity for the solo blind tasting challenge. You still with me? Then each chef makes one spoonful and Lawson, Lefebvre, Bourdain and Malarkey pick their favorite and worst spoonfuls and send two chefs home.

It was fun to see the judges in the kitchen, interacting with their teams. Lefebvre took more of a dictator approach, yelling and hovering over his team; Malarkey, who thankfully ditched his picnic plaid for a blazer, was more of an opinionated bystander in his kitchen; Lawson was like a loving mentor; and Bourdain a calm but stern instructor. It was a little too fast-paced and hectic to really get a sense of anyone's cooking but at least it wasn't boring.

Administrative assistant Lauren Scott from Lawson's team won immunity with her chicken soup for the first tasting. For the solo challenge, the chefs stood by on a platform watching as each judge tasted and commented on their food. Here's the fundamental problem with the show. Yes it's a blind tasting, but only sort of. The judges pick their favorite and least favorite bites of food, then the chefs that made those bites are revealed. Only after the chefs are revealed do the judges make their decisions of who goes home. So it's not really a blind decision...

In the end, Micah Kasman and his bland Israeli chicken from team Malarkey and Renatta Lindsey and her apple crumble from team Nigella were sent home.

Best, worst moments:

Every moment with Diane DiMeo. She earned herself the nickname Cruella. She renames her group "Team Diane," tries to pick a fight with her own teammate, insults everyone else's food and goes as far as flipping off Malarkey when he says he doesn't like her spoonful. Definitely crazy, but this woman can cook.

Bourdain being, well, classic Bourdain after tasting West Hollywood resident Khristianne Uy's uni soup. "It made me want to order an expensive bottle of wine and crash a Ferrari." Now that's the Bourdain I have a crush on.

This is like, The Voice + Chopped + Next Iron Chef all in one. I love it tbh.

I'm def Team Nigella or Tony. I can't stand the other two judges. They are annoying as fuck.

The French chef looks cute.

I hate his hair but I'd sit on his face.

he is attractive, but he gets really bitchy at points, which is not attractive.

This is my latest addiction show. How Tony was so picky in creating his team by turning everyone down was hilarious but hey that's what it takes to be number 1 :)

I like this show and I didn't find the format confusing. I'm interested in seeing how each round goes.

i really like how they taste the food blindly and can send their own teammates home.

i don't know how tony and ludo's hair and makeup make them look so much older and grumpier. or something. more bloated?

This is the show my dad and I bond over now. He loves Tony ( he predicted everyone Tony would pick cuz he's a stan who knows his favorite flavors) and I love Nigella. So that's who we're rooting for. I lie Ludo but it seems like Botox who the fuck are you Mallarkey brings the worst out in him. I also love that homegirl from the real l word is on here and is apparently good.

I want Malarkey and Ludo to angry fuck.

This show annoys me.

first the only judge I can stand is Anthony The french guy needs to calm the fuck down, Nigella's choices are a joke and Malarkey is disturbing to look at.

Also something about the way they try to eat off that spoon grosses me out.

and yet I still watch (with a lot of fast forwarding). don't know why.

Oh and what really annoyed me about the pilot was when they didn't pick a chef and were like "omg I made a mistake" after the reveal... like ummmmmmmmmm what. Food doesn't taste better the longer the favors sit in your mouth. You either thought it tasted good while chewing or you didn't. Stop trying to be "The Voice". It doesn't work the same way.

Attracted to all these chefs, except the blonde one.

"OMG this is the best thing I have ever eaten in my whole entire life, but I am going to have to say no!"
sprywonderdog 7th-Feb-2013 08:32 pm (UTC)
I love that so many of the women didn't care and came right out and said they wanted to be on Bourdain's team because he is dreamy.

I need Nigella and Anthony fanfics now.

At first I thought Ludo was a dick and then I saw the episode of No Reservations where he and Tony went to France and thought "crap - he seems so freaking likable and cute with his grandma..."

Love this show. I like Tony, my favorite.

I just want more Kitchen Confidential

Love this show. Even though Malarkey irritates me, I do like the rivalry with Ludo. Nigella is amazing and Tony is even greater than I thought he'd be.
