Sally Field asks Jennifer Lawrence to car pool

So Jennifer Lawrence and Sally Field Start a Car Pool …

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. – The Oscar nominees luncheon is an annual occasion for surreal showbiz congratulations, and the far-reaching back-slapping doesn’t stop there. A few hours after the luncheon and its attendant media blitz – when nominees do a round-robin of interviews by the pool at the Beverly Hilton here – there was another celebration of their talents at nearby Spago.

The party, put on by The Hollywood Reporter, featured a DJ performance by Snoop Lion (a k a Dogg), which the nominees watched over trays of tiny cheeseburgers, ravioli and sushi. Some of the hopefuls had made a costume change from a few hours earlier, and the rest milled around, letting their day sink in.

“Today was definitely the most surreal,” Howard Gertler, a producer of the documentary “How to Survive a Plague,” said, referring to what the Academy calls its class picture, a group photo of all the year’s nominees. “Bcause you’re just standing there and there’s Anne Hathaway but also Tom Hooper, Kathryn Bigelow, Kathleen Kennedy. I met all my idols today.”

Mr. Gertler credited Ms. Kennedy, Steven Spielberg’s longtime producer now working with LucasFilm to make the new “Star Wars,” as the reason he wanted to get into the movie industry, and told her so.

The musician J. Ralph, a nominee for his song “Before My Time” (performed by Scarlett Johansson and Joshua Bell) from the documentary “Chasing Ice,” likewise went up to Mr. Spielberg to pledge his idolization. “That’s why I got into making movies, his imagination and creativity,” he said. “That was the one person from being a kid, and maybe Axl Rose – 1989 Axl Rose.”

Even stars who might have have seen it all had a few out-of-body experiences.

“You think, how is it that I’m in the company of these people?” said Ben Affleck. “I was talking to Michael Mann today,” the director of “The Insider” and “Ali.” “You know, he’s just casually chatting me up, and I’m thinking, ‘This is Michael Mann!’ Like, I put a whole ‘Heat’ rip-off thing in my last movie, and he’s just sort of like, ‘Hey, how are you?’”

But it was Jennifer Lawrence, queen of the non sequitur, who might have had the most surreal Hollywood moment: “Sally Field asking me to car-pool,” she said. “To some cocktail party. And I just invited Jacki Weaver, and I’m trying to get Watts” (as in Naomi).

“Car-pooling with Sally Field,” Ms. Lawrence continued, reverentially. “Make my dreams come true.” They should, she strongly suggested, rent a large passenger van and maneuver around the awards circuit together. “And all of us just unload: Hathaway, Watts, Chastain, me! Like a clown car. It’ll be a lot more fun that way, and more intense.”

Sally Field is such a badass. I adore her and thought she was an epic Mary Todd Lincoln.
