Behind The Scenes of the Puppy Bowl 2013

..

..

Dachshund Harry and his sister, Sally, spend their days playing and napping. But, life wasn’t always easy for these two. Born prematurely to a mother who had to be euthanized, they were the only survivors of a litter of six, bottle-fed every two hours by Furever Dachshund Rescue Chair Laura Coulombe and her daughter, Mary.

The Puppy Bowl was filmed in November, and most of its stars have already been adopted. But Harry and Sally are still looking for homes in New England. Laura Coulombe said competing in the Puppy Bowl doesn’t guarantee a quick adoption.

“I think people really like the idea that they’re Puppy Bowl puppies, but our experience from last year is that people will adopt only because the dog is right for them,” Laura Coulombe said.

No. They'll get adopted. The adoption rates are still cheaper than the costs of spaying/neutering, vaccinating and microchipping at the vet for a dog.

What that's ridiculous. It's like they don't want these adorable pups and cats to get adopted. They should put more into trying to find these animals great homes instead of charging so much to adopt them in the first place.

I know they really need to bring down that price and I think they'll have an easier time finding them a home. I think maybe $400 is reasonable for them both? shelter dogs usually run between 50-200ish

We adopted our shelter dog for $75 and that included spaying/neutering and basic shots.

My beautiful girl was $200 from the rescue and that included her physical and shots when they received her from another shelter and spaying.

I paid $450 for our rescue dog. She was a puppy mill breeder, and the rescue had to do SO MUCH vet work, I didn't mind at all, I gave this old girl a happy home to live out her days in.

Do you think the vaccinations, the neutering/spaying, the medications, the food, the board and the administrative costs are really $50 for a dog? Taxpayers subsidized that rate.

They are a bonded pair. That is why they aren't adopted yet. The rescue may be rejecting applicants, too.

That's the places standard fee too. It's not just the I played in the puppybowl fee.

Under 1 Year Old $375.00
13 Months to 2 Years $325.00
3 Years to 6 Years $275.00
7 Years to 9 Years $250.00
10 Years & Older $225.00
Seniors Program $99.00

At least they are adopting them as a set though.

The cost isn't an impediment for adoption of the two dogs. The adoption rate is still cheaper than the costs of vetting a dog on one's own.

The probably reasons why they haven't been adopted is they are a bonded pair. Bonded pairs usually take a little while to find the right homes.

True. There are two of the sweetest, most adorable cats at the rescue I volunteer for and they're brothers so they go together and we've had them forever now. :(

It looks like they come from a daschund-specific rescue, and usually rescues like that have ridic adoption fees because they have a certain kind of dog that a lot of people will go looking for. Doesn't excuse it, but I feel like it IS the norm.
