Elementary: Jon Michael Hill On Marcus Bell, Jonny Lee Miller As Sherlock, And Lucy Liu As Watson.

With Benedict Cumberbatch already playing Holmes in the modern British drama Sherlock, and Robert Downey Jr receiving critical acclaim for his starring role in Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes action films, it was no small feat for Miller to find his own interpretation of the famous sleuth.

"I was taken by how gritty Jonny, as the choice for Sherlock, was; he's great," Jon Michael Hill told The Guide.

"His workload is really incredible; I've never seen anything like it. He not only manages to get it all memorised but he brings something unique and specific. He's also just a very funny guy. He's a lot of fun to work with."

Hill plays Detective Marcus Bell, the right-hand man of Captain Toby Gregson (played by Aidan Quinn) who initially feels threatened by the mysterious Holmes who swans about, dissecting his crime scenes.

"There's a territorial issue," Hill explained.

"He's been Captain Gregson's No 1 for a while and all of a sudden there's this consultant on the scene.

He has to swallow his pride. There's this genius in the house and Marcus has to take his lead every once in a while.

"But Sherlock is not without his flaws. He's a little reckless sometimes, whereas Marcus has a strong mind for bureaucracy. He knows what has to be done."

Hill also has plenty of praise for Liu, who is playing a completely new version of the traditionally male Dr Watson.

"In the first episode she has something very vulnerable and strong at the same time," he said.

"It's a great combination."

The show debuts in Australia on Sunday, February 3, in Ten's traditional drama timeslot of 8.30pm, which before Christmas was occupied by Homeland.

I love him on the show! I really love that he's growing a bit closer to Sherlock with each episode.

And I love JLM's Sherlock :) He's gives off a more vulnerable vibe than RDJ's and what I've seen of Benedict. Especially with last Sunday's episode.

Not necessarily more vulnerable, but more human. It's something that BBC Sherlock lacks, which I find frustrating. Even in the canon Holmes isn't some sort of robot devoid of human compassion and understanding, and I like that JLM's Sherlock can be tactless at times, but you can still tell that he's a caring person.

Yeah, I meant vulnerable in the sense that you can clearly see where he's flawed. I really appreciate this side of him because in other versions, Sherlock is this perfect genius who's only flaw is that other people can't follow his logic.

with Benedict's Sherlock I can't really tell that he and Watson are even supposed to be friends, what with all of the shit that he puts John through idk how he stands it. JLM's Sherlock and Lucy's Joan are so much more believable

Also I think the circumstances that lead to them working together explain why someone would willingly put up with someone like Sherlock.

Well...I agree, and I don't. In the BBC, they kind of go into a bit of showing how vulnerable and alone Watson is initially, without friends and detached family. So it's almost like... Sherlock is one of those nasty people who prey on the insecure and the lonely. Only not, because he really only gets into it with Watson. And Molly, albeit (possibly) unintentionally.

You see my conundrum.
