Princess Bride: Over-the-Top Disney Wedding a Viral Hit

Many brides want to be princesses on their big day, but one young woman actually became one: Ariel, the little mermaid.

Aspiring actress Jamie Chandler, 26, loves Disney so much that her entire wedding was devoted to the studio's iconic fairytales, going so far as to embody her favorite redheaded character, complete with a stuffed Flounder bearing witness. It's an unconventional fandom, one that brought her together with husband Christopher, 27, also an avid supporter of the Magic Kingdom.

"We both share a mutual love for the lightheartedness that Disney embodies," Jamie Chandler told TODAY.com. "Disney was a large part of both of our lives while growing up, and it is something that we both associate with family."

Photos of the Chandlers' fall 2011 wedding, which were recently published online, went viral, with commenters calling it everything from "awesomely creative" to "crazy" to bemoaning "those poor unfortunate souls."

But for Jamie and Christopher, it was simply an obvious choice for the wedding – the O'Fallon, Missouri couple both grew up singing along to the animated musicals and regularly visiting Disney World, a tradition that extended into adulthood and ultimately into marriage. In 2009, Christopher got down on one knee at Disney World and presented Jamie with a glass slipper, which held an engagement ring.

When it came time to plan their nuptials, Disney World seemed an obvious choice, but the couple lacked the means to invite all their friends and family. "We decided that if we could not go to Disney, then we would bring a little bit of Disney to us," said Jamie. "We wanted our guests to feel what it was like to be a kid again."

The couple spent the next two years planning and saving up for their ultimate fantasy wedding, and worked hard to keep it DIY. They crafted the centerpieces, invitations, programs, flowers and more themselves to keep costs down.

Of course, they also got some help from loved ones. Jamie's father made his own King Triton crown, the groomsmen embraced their villain alter-egos, and the maid of honor designed all of the bridesmaids' princess-themed gowns. "We asked each bridesmaid who their favorite Disney heroine was and tried to take that into account when deciding who would dress as who," Jamie explained.

"We both believe in Walt Disney's philosophy of always staying young at heart," said Jamie.
Guests who weren't in the wedding party were encouraged to don Disney themed attire at the reception, and the response was "overwhelmingly positive," said Jamie. "We received many compliments on the attire and the decor."

When the wedding day finally came, Jamie felt as if her dreams had finally come true. "There was not a single moment of the day that was any less magical than the one that came before it... Everyone dropped their guards for a few hours and allowed themselves to be childlike and to play, which is exactly what we intended."

(The couple made their own sea-accented centerpieces.)

(An ice mermaid takes center stage at the reception.)

"The reaction was overwhelmingly positive," Jamie said of her friends and family's involvement.
The newlyweds intend on incorporating their Disney dreams into the future, with a possible relocation to Burbank, California – home of Walt Disney Studios – as Christopher hopes to work for Disney in "any capacity."

But for the time being, the couple will make do with their favorite tradition: "We usually try to make it to Disney World as many times as we can," said Jamie. "It has always been our playground."

What are your thoughts on theme weddings, ONTD? I'd be more of a traditionalist for my own, but I think a theme wedding would be more fun to attend as a guest. That said, I'm still on the fence as to whether this is really cute or kind of tacky...

Yea all of these girls on my Facebook have been posting this, and I just don't get it. I love Disney. I'm not especially romantic, and I don't give a shit about weddings, but when someone posts a really gorgeous wedding photo I am able to say so with genuine honesty.

This is cheap looking. And it's not especially cute. I'm mostly talking about her hair at this point but whatever.
vehiclesshockme 5th-Feb-2013 09:57 pm (UTC)
You're not invited to my Disney wedding Brandon.

those dresses are atrocious
distant_lines 5th-Feb-2013 08:42 pm (UTC)
If a friend asked me to wear that for her wedding, I'd tell her I'd just sit in the crowd and watch.

bellyroomfan 6th-Feb-2013 06:35 pm (UTC)

loveumbrella 5th-Feb-2013 09:14 pm (UTC)
Yeah, they look cheap.

this is really cute, but also pretty tacky. the two aren't mutually exclusive lol.

her dress is lovely
pixiegerms 5th-Feb-2013 08:42 pm (UTC)
why am i always so left field of what ontd thinks lmao

it's my dream wedding i would never do tbh. (and i just saw the mickey mouse preacher AHAHAHAHA)
xbellaxmiax 5th-Feb-2013 08:48 pm (UTC)
ontd loves to be a judgemental ass, so don't worry. these people are obviously loving it and i'm sure they didn't have millions to spend on some crazy realistic replicas of disney dresses or whatever would make ontd happy- i still think it's sweet.
proxy 5th-Feb-2013 08:52 pm (UTC)
I feel the same about this.
aleronihead 5th-Feb-2013 09:01 pm (UTC)
IA

I'd never do this, but I think it's kind of adorable that they went with it so heartily. Especially doing everything themselves, it makes it really individualistic and fun.
endingonfire 5th-Feb-2013 09:09 pm (UTC)
mte. On the one hand, I love the Disney theme, and some of the ideas are pretty neat, but on the whole, it's pretty fug and OTT.
breadprincess 5th-Feb-2013 09:15 pm (UTC)
mte

not for me, but if it makes them happy then why not?
cuteej4 5th-Feb-2013 09:25 pm (UTC)
I don't think it's the worst I've ever seen. I feel like it could have been so much worse
strict_joy 5th-Feb-2013 10:36 pm (UTC)
IA. People take weddings too goddamn seriously. I would much rather go to a tacky, fun wedding like this than one where the bride has been a nightmare for months and cries over every detail.

"Aspiring actress Jamie Chandler,"

oh.
zombieland 5th-Feb-2013 08:43 pm (UTC)
lol mte. I don't know why, but when I read that I was like..."this all makes so much sense now"
distant_lines 5th-Feb-2013 08:41 pm (UTC)
This is tacky. I adore Disney, but it's just not cute having your friends dress up in crappy Disney princess gowns, having a stuffed animal with you at the altar, and just the array of it. It was too much, imo.
moonbeam59 6th-Feb-2013 02:50 am (UTC)
I don't even hate the idea of a costume wedding tbh, but carrying a stuffed animal down the aisle just looks so juvenile
ragechill 5th-Feb-2013 08:41 pm (UTC)
This is weird...
shelostcontro1 5th-Feb-2013 08:41 pm (UTC)
aw it may be tacky but the sentiment is cute
vanishingbee 5th-Feb-2013 08:42 pm (UTC)
Nice gif OP. ;)

Also I'm finding it hilarious she doesn't have a mermaid style dress.
champagnexdream 5th-Feb-2013 08:45 pm (UTC)
It is a mermaid style though...
vanishingbee 5th-Feb-2013 08:47 pm (UTC)
Doesn't the flare go out too high up to qualify? That ain't no tail fin.
rubyboots 5th-Feb-2013 08:45 pm (UTC)
Yeah I don't understand why she doesn't have a mermaid style dress, or why she didn't get one at least inspired by Ariel's own wedding dress, or...idk something
joliebelle 5th-Feb-2013 08:57 pm (UTC)
It's a fit and flare dress. I'm assuming that she chose this dress because of the ruffles
zombieland 5th-Feb-2013 08:58 pm (UTC)
Icon love <3

and ia, that was my first "wtf" thought when I saw these pics
