Commons Backs Gay Marriage In UK

MPs have voted overwhelmingly in favour of the government's legislation for same-sex marriage in England and Wales.

At the conclusion of the Commons' first opportunity to debate the The Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill, MPs voted by 400 to 175, a majority of 225, in favour of the legislation.

Prime Minister David Cameron has described the move as "an important step forward" that strengthens society.

But a number of Conservative MPs voted against the plans.

MPs' decision to back the bill at second reading signifies
that they approve with it in principle. The legislation will now proceed
to receive more detailed parliamentary scrutiny.

They were a step forward at the time, and probably helped encourage people to accept the idea of gay marriage, but IA, we definitely need the real thing.

Yeah, my issue was that it was essentially marriage without the label so we didn't offend the bigots.

I'm just surprised it was a Tory government that pushed this forward, backwards day or what?

IKR? It's pretty much the single positive thing this government have done. But of course:

But a number of Conservative MPs voted against the plans.

More Tory MPs voted against the Bill than for it, even though Cameron was encouraging them to vote for it.

The difference must have dropped on the floor.

It was Labour votes who pushed it through though :)

Cameron spent a LOT of political capital on trying to get this pushed through. What was his motive? What has he (or we, the country) given up?

David Cameron voted against repealing Section 28, so he's done a U-turn on gay rights. People like Iain Duncan Smith (Work and Pensions Sec) voted against civil partnerships but for gay marriage. When he was leader he whipped Tory MPs to vote against allowing gay couples to adopt. It's good that they've come around to gay rights, but it wasn't too long ago that they were opposed to Labour's attempts to extend rights for gay people.

When IDS was leader he whipped Tory MPs to vote against allowing gay couples to adopt, to be clear.

I agree that it was a step that probably caused people to rethink their views on same-sex marriage, especially people very much stuck in their ways. As strange and consolation-prize-ish as making 'civil partnerships' allowed but not marraige was, it was definitely helpful in bringing about change.
