No. 1 ranked model Joan Smalls for Prabal Gurung S/S 2013

The Sway of Spring – Drawing inspiration from the work of Anish Kapoor, an artist known for his geometric and biomorphic sculptures, the spring 2013 campaign from Prabal Gurung highlights the shape and movement of the new season. Model Joan Smalls poses for Daniel Jackson in black and white studio images reflecting a sense of liberation and ease. The campaign’s creative director and stylist, Tiina Laakkonen, gives Joan a perfectly refined look in the ethereal images.

Even in the decadent world of New York fashion, drinking before noon is usually a no-no. But that rule got waived for a very good cause yesterday, as Ecco Domani toasted new wines and new designers. In the past, the prolific vineyard has honored emerging talents like Derek Lam and Alexander Wang; this time around, the chosen ones included sustainable designer Susan Woo, and womenswear duo Ramon Martin and Ryan Lobo of Tome.

To congratulate the talents and further inspire their efforts, Prabal Gurung—himself an Ecco Domani recipient—took the stage and proclaimed, "Before this award, I had zero dollars. I applied for unemployment—thank God for the American government! And I worked out of my 300-foot studio..."

He continued, "For my first big Fashion Week event, the factory wouldn't give me my clothes, because I didn't have the $25,000 it cost to make them. Winning this award was such a huge deal—without it, I wouldn't have been able to show that collection, and I wouldn't be here today."

As the room raised their wine glasses in a toast, Gurung revealed a situation in which having a stiff drink probably helped his career. "I was at the infamous Boom Boom Room," he grinned. "And I walked up to Fern Mallis [when she was the president of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week]. I said, 'Fern, I have always wanted to show at the tents...I think you should give me this space for free.'" Her response? "You've got some guts. Consider it done." And many Prabal Gurung gowns for Michelle Obama and Emma Stone later, we can all drink to that! Read on for our exclusive interview with the charming designer on the subject of celebrity dressing, his epic Target collection, and more.

ELLE: Do you remember the first time you ever saw someone wearing a dress you designed?
Prabal Gurung: Oh, absolutely! You really never forget that. The first time I saw my look on a real person was in Paris, and I felt a little shock, a little thrill that went through my body. And that thrill never goes away; never. It's always a part of my work, knowing I'll get that thrill. I think I'm just really in love with women, and I love to see them looking incredibly, truly beautiful. I think every time a woman wears one of my dresses, you know, in a matter of speaking, I'm having a little love affair with her!

ELLE: Your Target line is launching soon, so does that mean you're expecting to have a million little love affairs?
PG: Oh, I'm so ready! Let's go! Especially because I'm really happy with that collection. Target did a really great job, and the pieces are so pretty.

ELLE: People will probably camp outside at 4am. to get them.
PG: Or they can wake up very early, go on the Internet, and claim them on target.com.

ELLE: Speaking of the Internet, your new ad campaign hit the web yesterday! Why did you choose Joan Smalls as your new campaign girl?
PG: Joan is so beautiful. She's beautiful physically, of course, but she's also really great as a person. She truly has real inner beauty, and intelligence, and a real presence of mind, and not every model has that. She's beautiful, she's intelligent, she's so easy to talk to...she's a stunning, wonderful person. And also, her story—how she struggled for a long time to make it as a top model, how she refused to give up—I find that to be very inspiring and beautiful, too.

ELLE: Your Fashion Show is next week. Want to talk about Fall 2013?
PG: [Laughs] Well...

ELLE: Okay, fine, new question. What song is on your iPod on repeat right now?
PG: Solange Knowles's new album is brilliant. I am obsessed with it. I think it is so amazing, and the sound is so rich and different. I love that album.

ELLE: We know you can drink wine. Can you cook?
PG: Cook?! Oh no. That's too much pressure. I mean, I can cook, but I'd get very nervous having my food being judged by dinner guests. I can't cook for people, you know; it would be so anxiety provoking! I mean, isn't that why we live in New York—because of 24 hour delivery?
