'Rules of Engagement' and other TV sitcoms that refused to die

It's baaaaaack ...

Rules of Engagement may be the Energizer bunny of sitcoms; the middling CBS comedy starring David Spade and Patrick Warburton flat-out refuses to die. After canceling it last spring, the network changed its mind, went back to the TV scrapyard and slotted it as a midseason replacement. As it returns for its seventh season (Mondays, 8:30 ET/PT), USA TODAY's Jayme Deerwester looks at a few other series that may have seen their days, but outlasted their expected shelf lives and stuck around to plug holes in network lineups. They're all shows that made us stop and ask, "Wait, that's still on?"

My mother is responsible for every horrible sitcom staying on the air.

soweto 5th-Feb-2013 05:44 am (UTC)
WINGS! OMG, blast from the past. I used to watch the reruns on USA on Saturday mornings. I think... I can't really remember. I just know my tiny childhood self loved this show.
roguewave3 5th-Feb-2013 05:45 am (UTC)
Does anyone remember Grace Under Fire?
redaodai 5th-Feb-2013 05:49 am (UTC)
Yes. It was all right from what I remember. Kind of a light Roseanne (before Roseanne became a mess).
roguewave3 5th-Feb-2013 05:51 am (UTC)
Yes, it was a lot like Roseanne.
heart_of_butter 5th-Feb-2013 05:49 am (UTC)
Yes! Well, I remember it existing at least...
elstree 5th-Feb-2013 05:49 am (UTC)
i do but i can't remember a damn thing about it except that it starred a blonde woman.
this_repetition 5th-Feb-2013 05:50 am (UTC)
That's another show I've seen too much of!
kdvn 5th-Feb-2013 05:53 am (UTC)
Yup. I used to watch it. It was like an edgier Torklesons.
violue 5th-Feb-2013 05:56 am (UTC)
I miss watching reruns of that.
pikapika217 5th-Feb-2013 06:06 am (UTC)
LOVED IT. It was awkward when Quentin was suddenly a gigantic teenager tho. Why'd they do that?!
sashafarce 5th-Feb-2013 06:10 am (UTC)
Yes, and the first 4 seasons or so were fantastic. I used to watch reruns on Oxygen, I think, for a long ass time.
headcaseheidi 5th-Feb-2013 07:07 am (UTC)

ugly_jacket 5th-Feb-2013 05:46 am (UTC)

the facts of life should have been on forever.
heart_of_butter 5th-Feb-2013 05:48 am (UTC)
The Simpsons needed to be cancelled over ten years ago. Why is it still on.
cherrybombx 5th-Feb-2013 08:17 am (UTC)
the prophetic troy mcclure explains:

"Yes, the Simpsons have come a long way since an old drunk made humans out of his rabbit characters to pay off his gambling debts. Who knows what adventures they'll have between now and the time the show becomes unprofitable?"

it still makes money. tho with the voice actors striking/taking a paycut/something scandalous involving the budget (i can't remember and am too lazy to google it), the end may finally be nigh. then we can officially separate Good Simpsons from the horrible pretend fake simpsons whose shit episodes sadly outnumber the real ones at this point.
heart_of_butter 5th-Feb-2013 08:28 am (UTC)
YAAAASSSS @ this truth. Everything past season 9* doesn't exist to me. It's just another shitty animated sitcom with characters that happen to look and sound like one of the greatest comedy programs of this generation.

(Even though half of season 9 is garbage. It's so bizarre to have the DVD and go from a flawfree episode to a total POS. I can't really pinpoint where the writing team was changed up but the differences between good and bad episodes are so stark it's ridiculous.)

Edit- Wikipedia to the rescue:
The aired season contained three episodes which were hold-over episodes from season eight, which Bill Oakley and Josh Weinstein ran, as well as two episodes from season seven. It also contained two episodes which were run by David Mirkin, and another two episodes which were run by Al Jean and Mike Reiss

So, basically season 9 in proper is shitty, and the good episodes are just leftovers from better seasons. Glad that got cleared up.

pikapika217 5th-Feb-2013 06:02 am (UTC)
they rerun old Two and a half men eps and some of the eps were cute & funny, like the one with the website about charlie. It was a better show when Judith wasn't outright hateful, Charlie just a horrid slut with no moral barometer and Alan wasn't as perfectly good as he thought. They grey areas MADE the show

I used to randomly see episodes on channels, but RARELY which sucks because it was so fucking hilarious. I used to watch it all the time when I was little, and I'm sure I didn't get any of the jokes, but I still liked it loool.
