Halftime ratings DOWN from last year

Ratings. Although Sunday’s Super Bowl broke a ratings record in metered markets, Deadline reports that Beyoncé failed top last year’s performer, Madonna, in ratings measured during the halftime-show half-hour. Beyoncé’s halftime show, which occurred in the 8 – 8:30 PM ET time slot, scored a 48.2/71. That’s down from the 48.1/72 of Madonna’s 2012 halftime performance. Madonna had 114 million viewers, more than the actual game and Beyoncé had her ratings go from 100 Millon to 95 Millon during her halftime performance.

I wish someone would make the Lefsetz column a post here. Everyone likes a good burning at the stake and here he would get roasted for it.

~the show was an assault~
zeerine 4th-Feb-2013 07:58 pm (UTC)
Isn't that still great for an African American performer?
chaincombo 4th-Feb-2013 07:58 pm (UTC)
I love Beyonce and I love Madonna, two amazing female performers.
jesusbitches 4th-Feb-2013 07:58 pm (UTC)
Madonna was better. That Vogue entrance alone made it superior in every way.
slacker_chic 4th-Feb-2013 07:58 pm (UTC)
Meh, I only watched last year to see Queen M.I.A. My brain still cannot process her in that cheerleading outfit doing choreographed dance moves.
Beyonce slayed though. I loved her performance.
yummyhead2toe 4th-Feb-2013 08:23 pm (UTC)
She looked really good!
gaga 4th-Feb-2013 07:58 pm (UTC)
madonna had spectacle, her entrance, her stage, all of it was very grand, but beys was so much more high energy, idk they were both great, best halftime shows in a very long time
williammiller 4th-Feb-2013 07:59 pm (UTC)
I like Beyonce, but I didn't care enough to tune in to see her performance.

also in my opinion we don't have superstars like we did 20+ years ago. there are no Madonna's or MJ's or Beatles' or Elvis's anymore. i can't think of one song from any popular artist today that will be timeless. like 30 years from now we'll hear it and it will be historic, the way it is when you hear billie jean, or she loves you, or hound dog, or like a virgin. just my opinion. it's hard to imagine anyone in 2050 listening to a justin bieber or beyonce song and thinking it's timeless.
teenageriot16 4th-Feb-2013 08:05 pm (UTC)
I feel like every generation says exactly that.
nene718 4th-Feb-2013 08:07 pm (UTC)
because they do

lol at her saying beyonce won't be considered timeless plz
howlcosmiclove 4th-Feb-2013 08:19 pm (UTC)
lol they do
lillylilacs 4th-Feb-2013 09:05 pm (UTC)
yup
gaga 4th-Feb-2013 08:10 pm (UTC)
single ladies will easily be timeless.
smokesinatra 4th-Feb-2013 08:13 pm (UTC)
idk about bieber -- MAYBE baby will still register years from now -- but I do think there are some hits made today that will be timeless. single ladies! it's definitely ~going down in history. even my 58 year old dad knows that song and he listens to country radio and sportstalk exclusively
kurtvonnegut 4th-Feb-2013 08:15 pm (UTC)
oh please, people have been saying the every generation. let's stop with the "X generation was so much better" trope.
kerrence 4th-Feb-2013 08:17 pm (UTC)
oh please this gets said every generation

I'm very happy you just turned 30 or are close to it but this is a ridiculous comment to make
kellerton 4th-Feb-2013 08:18 pm (UTC)
everyone says this because the only songs that stand the test of time are the GOOD ones. do you not think that the 60s, 70s, 80s, had terrible music? THEY HAD TONS. we just don't remember it because they stopped playing it.
drunkagron 4th-Feb-2013 08:51 pm (UTC)
Disco was horrible and tacky, but it had some good music.
blazinguns 4th-Feb-2013 10:15 pm (UTC)
I agree to some extent. Awesome music is being made every year, so I don't agree that songs of today won't be remembered. However, mainstream popular culture is severely fractured compared to previous decades, and there is no longer that homogenous mainstream culture which allowed superstars to emerge, the kind known and loved by "everybody". So it's hard to conceive many artists today who will go down in history books alongside the people you mentioned, simply because there aren't artists who even currently sell records at that volume.

theactualworst 4th-Feb-2013 08:02 pm (UTC)
I thought it was pretty underwhelming tbh.
crazyfirecrotch 4th-Feb-2013 08:07 pm (UTC)
it was.

there was no big finale. madonna's kept on getting bigger and bigger. when Beyonce was done she was like k thx. y'all can leave now im done. turns power off

drkshdw 4th-Feb-2013 08:03 pm (UTC)
Bey is such a phenomenal performer, but I felt like there was something to be desired with her performance. It's probably just a testament to how good of a performer she actually is, but I feel like she never BROUGHT it the way I thought she would. I think there a lot of other little factors (the set wasn't great. the breaks between songs kind of felt choppy. there should've bee more DC). I think if she ended it with Destiny's Child it would've left a bigger impact.
xeroxicide__ 4th-Feb-2013 08:04 pm (UTC)
I did expect a little more from bey. Madonnas performance was very Super Bowl-esque with the costumes, the grand entry, the pompoms. However, bey has her own standards and she did her thing. The songs just weren't right. I mean sports games always pick songs with a heavy beat and vocals just don't matter, so Halo was a really lame note to end on.
withoutyoursmil 4th-Feb-2013 09:50 pm (UTC)
that's a good point about madonna's been more super bowl themed.
chocmarsh 4th-Feb-2013 08:04 pm (UTC)
I felt like I was watching a dancer who could sing instead of a singer giving a halftime show. It was a good show just a bit underwhelming.
yummyhead2toe 4th-Feb-2013 08:24 pm (UTC)
Exactly.
