Jessica Chastain's Broadway Debut in 'The Heiress' Recoups Investment

Producers o The Heires have announced that the Broadway revival will recoup its $3 million capitalization during its final week of performances. The limited run closes Feb. 9.

Adapted b Ruth n Augustus Goet from th Henry James ove Washington Square, the 1947 play star Jessica Chastain s the socially awkward daughter of a well-heeled but emotionally cold doctor in 19th century New York. Directed b Moises Kaufman, the production also star David Strathairn Dan Stevens n Judith Ivey.

The play drew mixed reviews but has posted steady if unspectacular grosses since opening on Nov. 1. Publicity from Chastain's Oscar-nominated performance i Zero Dark Thirty elped bolster box office in recent weeks, along with the start of season three o Downton Abbey, in which Stevens plays the central role of Matthew Crawley.

Lead producers o The Heiress r Paula Wagner Roy Furman n Stephanie P. McClelland. While closing date of the limited engagement was originally scheduled for Feb. 10, the show will shutter a day early to allow Chastain to attend the BAFTA Awards in London that day. She is nominated for best actress fo Zero Dark Thirty, which is also up for best film.

Productions that closed early without recovering their investment have include The Performers, starrin Cheyenne Jackson Alicia Silverstone n Henry Winkler Dead Accounts, wit Katie Holmes Davi Mamet' The Anarchist, wit Patti LuPone n Debra Winger; and the musical Scandalou an Chaplin.

nicest celeb i've ever met. i saw the show a while ago while it was still in previews/before her award nominations etc and she was SO wonderful. also, pictures do NOT do her justice. she photographs so old but irl she is just flawless

i thought she was okay- she overacted a lot compared to the other actors. it really just...was not a good show

That's the problem with that play. If the actors are good, it's amazing. If not, it's so painful. The Olivia DeHavilland movie is amazing.

The Heiress was enjoyable, but it could've been the fact that I was totally drinking doubles the entire time.

She's beautiful, but her acting was so "blah" until the second act.
