Lena wears something to the Director's Guild Awards
Lena Dunham isn't letting Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's harsh review of Girls get to her.
"I have to admit, I only skimmed it," Dunham just told me at the DGA Awards in Hollywood. "It seemed like a mixed review and I have a policy about not reading those."
Besides, it's not like the basketball legend's work as a television critic ever crossed her mind.
"[Abdul-Jabbar's] review of Girls was called to my attention on Twitter," Dunham said. "And I blurted out to my dad, 'Kareem Abdul-Jabbar reviewed Girls.' And he said, 'I don't even know how to process that. I don't even know what that means.'"
Abdul-Jabbar lashed out at Dunham for her casting of black actor Donald Glover as a love interest for Dunham's character Hannah because "it came across as forced" after she faced criticism for the show's lack of diversity.
He wrote on Huffington Post that "a black dildo would have sufficed and cost less."
Criticism aside, Dunham did say she could imagine the NBA Hall of Famer appearing on Girls some day.
"Kareem crushed it on New Girl," she gushed. (Abdul-Jabbar guest starred as himself on New Girl in April.) "So if we're ever in need of a Kareem type, he's definitely the first person I'd go to."

i don't like this comment but i can't really figure out why.
... as if he would consider appear on that show. like... read his criticism before making that comment, lena... my god she is like so dumb.
Of course she doesn't get it.
I can understand if she doesn't want to pay attention to the "fat, dumpy chick," critics like Howard Stern; but she's throwing out the baby with the bathwater by deciding to not read any criticism.
The fuck?
And while I admit that it feels like a no-win situation "You have no people of ethnicities!" "This is just a token black person!", it really feels like she went, "You want people of color? I'LL GIVE YOU PEOPLE OF COLOR. PERSON. ONE PERSON. So...shut up!"
However, from all the interviews I've read with her, most of the show's criticism is going over her head. She blows critics off and tags on the accusation of 'sexism.' While you can argue that criticism for the show seems more amplified because Lena is a woman, the point is that she's not really representing all 'Girls' and that doesn't seem to click with her.
*edited because it's late and made loads of errors.

and therein lies her problem. how are you ever going to evolve and learn and become a better person if you're unwilling to read legitimate criticism?
i'm not excusing the white-washing of 'girls'. but what is she supposed to do? spend all day reading blogs for their latest girls bashing?
I don't like Lena as a comedian cos of her "jokes" and she is very daddy rich girl but I like the show and if I was her I would totally loled of that critic cos really it cames from a ex-basketball player is not valid
Whoops, I missed the memo that said there were professions that black people aren't allowed to belong to if they want to criticise her show.
Everyone has opinions and ofc are valid but not valid in a business way.
Thankfully for her, i don't hate her as much as i hate Tina Fey.
